Mushrooms - stomach upset ?

Kulfichick · 06/04/2024 22:53

I normally can eat mushrooms with no problems but last night I had garlic mushrooms, cooked in butter, on toast and had a terrible stomach after...gurgling wind last night followed by stomach cramps today.
I'm assuming the mushrooms were the cause.
Has anyone else had this from mushrooms? They were just the ordinary white supermarket variety.

Often

Actually they used to spark migraine in me. Then one time I was really really ill on them, didn't realise it was mushrooms causing me trouble and opened a tin of mushroom soup when I was feeling better - back to a bucket and the loo

Doesnt happen all the time, probably about 5/6 times in 40 years

Interesting. Is it an intolerance, so you think?
Still got the belly ache now, have barely been able to eat today.

Yes but since having my gallbladder removed I can tolerate them again.

Absolutley no idea but each time Ive got ill its been from eating mushrooms from a restaurant or takeaway, never been ill with ones ive eaten cooked at home or in other peoples homes

What a really coincidental post I had to check I didn't write it. I love garlic and mushrooms. Recently made some mushroom soup which had a bit of garlic in then lots of garlic bread and garlic croutons. I was not well. I also had the same reaction when I had really garlicky mushrooms before. I spent ages googling if you could be reactive to mushrooms and garlic bread together but drew a blank

Kulfichick · 06/04/2024 23:17

Your meal sounds so tasty, such a shame it made you ill, easilydistracted.

@Kulfichick my downfall was greed when I ate extra garlic bread. Can't claim credit it was a gousto recipe but was nice. Kind of worth it 🤣

I couldn’t eat mushrooms for about four years after a stomach upset when the last thing I ate was a mushroom risotto. Funnily enough I don’t think it was the risotto or the mushrooms that caused the upset as it was all a bit one off iykwim, just one of those things, but my body remembered MUSHROOMS and refused to let me eat them for all that time. Still not terribly keen on them, unless they are tiny ones fried in butter until caramelised .

Oh wow I’ve had terrible migraines this week. Can’t shake them and thought it was the weather but I’ve been eating mushrooms on toast!

Thats it, my body remembered and i couldn't face then for yonks after and if I am going to get sick with them, say I wake in the night, my brain is screaming at me mushrooms and thats all I can focus on till they are all out of me

To the PP who mentioned garlic, the ones that have made me ill have been dishes from indian or chinese restaurants - garlic laden - so maybe there is a link?

Kulfichick · 06/04/2024 23:40

Yes I am wondering if the garlic was also a contributing factor. They were very garlicky (and delicious)

Yes I’ve had this too… but sometimes am okay with mushrooms. Weird eh?

CosyFanTucci · 07/04/2024 00:16

More likely to be the garlic, especially if the green shoot wasn’t removed.

caringcarer · 07/04/2024 00:29

I have a severe allergy to mushrooms. If I have any at all my lips and mouth tingle then my throat constricts and my cheeks puff up. I have to go to the hospital for an adrenaline injection. I have a pen to use. I was told by a hospital consultant, that that mushrooms are quite a common allergy.

Garlic is a high FODMAP food so can cause gastric symptoms such as wind, pain, bloating. Just after eating is a bit soon though. It takes foods a while to get into the gut. I get symptoms 24hours after I eat something for example. However when you eat it sparks your the digestive system so you can get symptoms shortly after eating but it's actually something from a previous meal/day before.

I haven’t heard of this as an issue before, is this bit poisonous?

fixies · 07/04/2024 20:58

Look up 'fodmaps'. I have ibs and need to avoid these foods that resistant to digestion. Mushrooms anc garlic are high in formap and upset the stomach. It be bloated and really uncomfortable after eating this.

indianrunnerduck · 07/04/2024 21:16

I recently used up a large amount of mushrooms, cooked in butter, in an omelette, with fresh bread. That night I was violently sick, followed by a migraine. That has never happened before (although I have had migraines all my life) but I had an unshakeable feeling that it was triggered by the mushrooms.

Coconutter24 · 07/04/2024 21:42

I stopped eating mushrooms over a year ago, they began to make me feel sick, so nauseous to the point I couldn’t stand, room spinning and the runs. Garlic also makes me feel sick (I do have ibs though)

easilydistracted1 · 07/04/2024 21:44

Oh @fixies to that's very interesting as it's only really happened when I've been eating a really balanced vegan diet with pulses and lots of veg but they all seem to be high fomap. Don't think I can cut anything else out 🤣

ScreenPrinting · 07/04/2024 21:49

My DD, who is migraine-prone, often throws up after eating mushrooms. I’ve always thought there might be a link. She adores the bloody things so she still eats them sometimes. She’s not sick every time but often enough that I warn her!!!

OnHerSolidFoundations · 07/04/2024 21:57

Some people get sick if the little sprouty green bit is left inside the garlic.
