Mushrooms - stomach upset ?

Kulfichick · 06/04/2024 22:53

I normally can eat mushrooms with no problems but last night I had garlic mushrooms, cooked in butter, on toast and had a terrible stomach after...gurgling wind last night followed by stomach cramps today.
I'm assuming the mushrooms were the cause.
Has anyone else had this from mushrooms? They were just the ordinary white supermarket variety.

Well! Something learned today! I ate sprouty garlic last week, am used to eating green garlic, thought it would be no different. Ended up feeling very sick in the middle of the night. No vomit but I came very close :(
Thank you, I will be more careful in the future!

Mushrooms are quite guilty for causing blockages- if your tummy is still sore could be this!?

It wasn't a blockage it caused, it was the reverse

Recently mushrooms have been upsetting my stomach. I assumed it was the butter they were cooked in, sometimes they take quite a lot in the cooking.

I love mushrooms but have been really ill, gripey stomach, feeling sick etc, from them occasionally. The worst was when I ate marinated mushrooms grilled on a bbq. I felt terrible almost instantly.

Ive done a bit of searching and it seems if mushrooms are past their best - ie getting a tad slimy or smelly - its enough to give you galloping gut rot

Who knew?! I'll definitely be more careful in future.

@viques it was definitely the risotto rice!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 08/04/2024 23:11

Uncooked rice -especially risotto-can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, bacteria that can cause food poisoning. When the rice is cooked, the spores can survive. Then, if the rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores will germinate into bacteria.20

Always cool quickly and store immediately in fridge. Don't leave it sitting. Serve as soon as cooked.

Mushrooms can be high in fructose- if you are on a low FODMAP diet (for IBS for example) they are one of the foods to avoid& then reintroduce while you look for symptoms.

I grow magic mushrooms. If you purchase open cup mushrooms whose veil has broken, the spores (black powdery stuff on the gills) are mature and much harder to digest. Stick with closed cup mushrooms and beware of any mushrooms that release a lot of black stuff when chucked in the pan with butter/oil.

I developed a mushroom intolerance, gripes, gas, trots. Took me a while to pin it down.

Beebumble2 · 09/04/2024 09:51

Once I ate an individual wild mushroom tart, from a well known supermarket.
6 hours later, I woke up shaking, D&V. It was awful. For years I couldn’t even pass by mushrooms on sale without feeling ill.
I can tolerate them now, but not by choice.
Funny things Fungi!
