What’s the worst book to film/tv adaption you’ve seen?

Mine is Miss Peregrines home for peculiar children.

In the book, Emma controls fire. She’s sassy, strong, stands up for herself and calls out peoples shit.

In the film, she is lighter than air and defers to her male costar. I was really disappointed by this film

The Dark is Rising.

Utterly abysmal.

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 05/04/2024 13:48

The first Dune and Captain Corelli's Mandolin come to mind as they both started really well with pretty good casting and then just fell apart.

The Golden Compass wasn't a great film, but I do wonder if it could ever have been, given it's mostly exposition in the book. Some things are just more enjoyable to read than watch.

The DS and I might be in a minority with this one, but neither of us liked the Armando Iannucci David Copperfield. Nothing to do with the colourblind casting, it was change in the ending with Ham surviving and lots of original plot cut out.

Harry Potter. They completely messed with all the characters. Hermione is too rebellious and no where near as studious. Ron is reduced to stupid facial expressions. Almost all of the adults are 20years too old. And don't even get me started on Ginny. After they butchered the characters they also missed out key plot points they then had to shoe horn in to make the story make sense. Grrr.

Berlinlover · 05/04/2024 13:51

Circle of Friends and Brooklyn, both very disappointing films.

squashyhat · 05/04/2024 13:52

Swallows and Amazons. Atrocious mangling of the storyline and characters

RockyRogue1001 · 05/04/2024 13:52

Two come to mind.

And it's because I think they just don't translate to the screen without losing the best essence of the writing

Notes on a scandal
And
The time traveller's wife.

Both books I loved

whosaidtha · 05/04/2024 13:53

The handmaids tale. In the book the main character is so passive. She wouldn't have dared do half the stuff the tv character does. And the officers and wives were way too young. They are like 70+in the books.

itsnotabouthepasta · 05/04/2024 13:55

PS I love you

it lost so much joy by switching from Dublin to New York. And Gerard butlers Irish accent was horrendous.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 05/04/2024 13:56

Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 05/04/2024 13:57

Possession by A.S. Byatt. Glorious book turned into this insipid nothingness starring Gwyneth bloody Paltrow and some himbo dude.

EvenStillIWantTo · 05/04/2024 13:57

Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

An absolutely beautiful book. The film is dire - abysmal acting from every single actor.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 05/04/2024 14:00

Stephen King's Pet Sematary. The book is so good but each film has been absolute crap, they change so much when the story is great as it is.

World War Z. Could have been amazing and was just silly formulaic shite. Even Brad Pitt looking Hot couldn't save it

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 05/04/2024 14:01

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher

😳😳😳

Laiste · 05/04/2024 14:03

The Hobbit.

Rubbish. Way too full of CGI and had Legolas in it when he shouldn't have been and even invented a daft romance for him HmmHmmHmm

i can't roll my eyes enough!

Oh, it's one of my favourite films but admittedly I've never read the book.

Not a Brad Pitt fan and never found him attractive but in World War Z he is gorgeous. Also loved seeing Peter Capaldi working for WHO.

SpikeWithoutASoul · 05/04/2024 14:04

That horrendous Fleabag-style adaptation of Persuasion with Dakota Johnson.

Shortpoet · 05/04/2024 14:04

The latest Famous Five was joyless. I honestly think Comic Strip nailed the essence of it better!

babybunny123 · 05/04/2024 14:04

I second Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, totally unbelievable casting !

Have you seen the earlier film? That was much better.

S&A recent version was a classic example of take names from a famous book, change their characters and a good amount of the plot, but still pretend it's based on the book with a fan base to trick people into watching it.

SongSungBlues · 05/04/2024 14:06

Another vote for The Dark Is Rising. Just why? Its like they completely missed the point and setting of the book and characters and produced a complete abomination!

Motherpro · 05/04/2024 14:06

One of my favourite short stories is The Birds by Daphne Du Maurier. I haven't seen the Hitchcock film and really don't want to. I can't imagine any adaptation would live up to the original. Same with Du Maurier’s other works tbh like Don't Look Now and Rebecca.

K0OLA1D · 05/04/2024 14:07

Harry Potter

Anything Stephen King has written with the exception of Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption.

How they thought they could do dark tower any justice with just 1 film I have no idea!!
