What’s the worst book to film/tv adaption you’ve seen?

Mine is Miss Peregrines home for peculiar children.

In the book, Emma controls fire. She’s sassy, strong, stands up for herself and calls out peoples shit.

In the film, she is lighter than air and defers to her male costar. I was really disappointed by this film

Wuthering Heights with Tom Hardy in.

I've never seen a decent Wuthering Heights !

Some things should be left alone.
Left in people's imaginations where it's always perfect.

Two come to mind.

And it's because I think they just don't translate to the screen without losing the best essence of the writing

Notes on a scandal
And
The time traveller's wife.

Both books I loved

Along those lines “Leave the World behind”. The main criticism of the film is that “you don’t find out what happens”
or “ the disaster isn’t realistic” but the book really isn’t about that- the disaster is just there as the backdrop to the conflicts between the characters that emerge as they are forced together- it’s a book about human relationships and power dynamics ( racism and wealth). Also making the wife into a daughter made no sense. Kevin Bacon was good though.

I read somewhere that HP was going to be played by the kid who did 6th sense. But then someone was matey with DRs parents and he got it.

(could well be bollocks)

They went with an all British cast so he wouldn't have been cast for that reason.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 05/04/2024 15:03

Jesus Christ Superstar.

I don't recall them drinking Coke and driving VW Campers in the Bible. 😡

Laiste · 05/04/2024 15:04

whosaidtha Ah! Like i said i can well believe it's a load of bollocks.

The Name of the Rose. It's old now but oh boy was I pissed off when I left the cinema!

newfriend05 · 05/04/2024 15:06

The Lovely bones .. the book stayed with me was so beautifully written.. and the film missed so much out it just didn't come across

The five people you meet in heaven .. my favourite book of all time .. ended up

therealcookiemonster · 05/04/2024 15:06

the hobbit

Amazon's production of Three Pines was appallingly bad. Did the writers even read Louise Penny's books?!

They transformed a charming village with a slightly mystical feel into some kind of worn out looking survivalist outpost. Utterly depressing.

Can I add my sister's keeper and the horse whisperer to the list?
Both had completely different endings that made a nonsense of the story...

Yes !! I use to have to tell people the proper ending in the book ( my sisters keeper )

One of my favourite short stories is The Birds by Daphne Du Maurier. I haven't seen the Hitchcock film and really don't want to. I can't imagine any adaptation would live up to the original. Same with Du Maurier’s other works tbh like Don't Look Now and Rebecca.

@MotherPro I saw the Hitchcock adaption of The Birds as a child. I'm 65 now and I still really would not see it again - it was terrifying and even thinking about it now gets my heart beating just a tiny bit faster!

DuckonaBike · 05/04/2024 15:13

Just remembered another one - Girl with a pearl earring. The film changed the ending!

Ah, i hate the book with a passion, it's just so intellectually smug. Saying that, I enjoy hating it so much, I re read it every few years, it's about time for another outing, to feed my righteous wrath.

The film was silly and quite fun.

The Dark is Rising.

Utterly abysmal.

I watched 10 minutes of that then chose to pretend it had never happened. I hope one day someone who's actually read the books does a really good BBC miniseries instead. It deserves so much better than low budget US filmmakers trying to create the bastard hybrid of Harry Potter and Pokémon (gotta catch them all!) and failing even at that. The only saving grace is that it was such a flop they left the rest of the books alone - imagine what they'd have done with The Grey King.

LunaNorth · 05/04/2024 15:24

The recent adaptation of Love in a Cold Climate with Lily James. Absolute tosh.

Belathecreator · 05/04/2024 15:25

Howl's Moving Castle.
Whilst the film is okay as an animated steampunk fairy tale, as an adaptation of a perfect* book it falls far short both in plot and character.

I could provide a lengthy justification for why it's perfect, but that would derail the thread. It just is.

tearfulmam · 05/04/2024 15:31

P.S) I love you was awful!

XelaM · 05/04/2024 15:31

Bonfire of the Vanities
Absolute masterpiece of a book and the film is just a joke that has absolutely zero to do with the book. It's not even an adaptation. It's just a joke.

War and Peace
Pretty much all recent adaptations of War and Peace are terrible with the exception of the one with Audrey Hepburn as Natasha, Mel Ferrer as Prince Andrey and Henry Fonda as Pierre. All other films are a farce.

Edited

The casting for Bonfire of the Vanities was an absolute joke. As was the adaptation. Abysmal.

stayathomer · 05/04/2024 15:34

Artemis Fowl. Hadn’t loved the books tbh but my god what a terrible film (and how could they be so insulting to the Irish given it’s written by an Irish author?!)

MrsLeonFarrell · 05/04/2024 15:39

The Lord of the Rings.

ViveLaOeuf · 05/04/2024 15:40

Agree with @SpikeWithoutASoul that Netflix adaptation of Persuasion a couple of years ago was awful on so many different levels.

The film of I am Legend totally changed the ending, and by doing so made it a lot less clever than the book.

Godesstobe · 05/04/2024 15:45

Mary Poppins.
I absolutely loved the Mary Poppins books as a child and I was very excited to see the film. My parents booked tickets for the premier in Leicester Square for my 10th birthday but I developed appendicitis the day before and couldn't go. Everyone who visited me in hospital was raving about the film.
My parents took me to see it when I had recovered and I was SO disappointed. It was the first time I realised that film makers often completely change a book. Mary in the books is strict and often bad tempered and not at all like saccharine sweet Julie Andrews and her spoonful of sugar. And even as a 10 year old I knew that Dick van Dyck's accent was an insult. Everyone else loved the film so I never told anyone that I did Vs

No they didn't - several actors in Harry Potter are Irish, not British.

Have you seen Saving Mr Banks?
