Just came back from my grocery shop got my toddler out of the car. He was whinging picked him up looked up as you do and there was an xl bully just staring from up the road. I bloody shit myself and walked fast then ran with my child. Can't believe it was just free of lead no muzzle no owner. I'm still shaking like a leaf as he looked like he was going to chase us. Now I'm to scared to go out incase its around all the news has prob made me worse, but how can I protect me and my son if we see it again how do I report??

The latest attack that’s in the news is terrifying as it took a lot of people to try unsuccessfully to stop the dog. It was shot by police.

elizabethdraper · 04/04/2024 21:39

I couldn't tell the difference between an so bully, American bully, English bully they all look the same to me

"Man eating"?🍽️

Well I watched two of them kill a man and they were tearing him apart so yeah, man eaters definitely

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 04/04/2024 21:44

Call the cops

if not sure, report it.

This is such hyperbole. Any breed of dog that had this many people running around would react the same way.

As previous comments have said, the dog pest thing you can do is run.

I've seen grown men throw themselves on top of each other to get away from my teeny tiny puppy Rottweiler. Some people just do.

These dogs were not bred for fighting. In recent years people have used them for fighting. They were bred for companionship and being a terrier - bred to hunt vermin. Like a jack Russell terrier. A Staffordshire bull terrier. An Airedale terrier. A west highland terrier. You get my point. That's why they chase.

arbitary · 04/04/2024 22:00

@TesticularHeft You are probably right about how any dog might behave under the circumstances. However, the dog shouldn’t be off the lead in the first place or without a muzzle as that is the law now. Every dog should be kept under control in any case.

BakedTattie · 04/04/2024 22:08

So was it actually ‘ready to pounce’ on you?

DrJoanAllenby · 04/04/2024 22:10

Do you shake like a leafy when you see a Labrador?

Some people have forgotten that they are banned off lead by law, and for a reason.

Andthereyougo · 04/04/2024 18:47

Don’t ever run, you become the game and the dog’s ( any dog) instinct is to chase. Safest thing would be to get back in your car, shut the doors.
Call 101 and report.

Edited

Also put your child behind you so that you act as a barrier to the dog and don’t turn your back to them and don’t run.

dont pick your child up as that makes them a target to the dog and your arms are also then not free to protect yourself and your child.

Watch some videos on YouTube about what to do when confronted by a dog and teach your children too.

If it’s the gentleman that was all over the news, what an awful thing to witness, that was horrific.

I don't think you're overreacting. It's a fact these dogs kill or disfigure for life. I'm a huge dog person but there is no excuse for having dogs which can cause such harm to others. Agree on calling police and maybe posting on local groups warning people.

Yes it was that one and it's the worst thing I've ever seen. Im still nervous as hell around dogs now when I never was before. I just hate the thought of someone getting attacked by one, they should all just be PTS and be done with it

Lorelaigilmore88 · 04/04/2024 22:47

Every body telling the op to 'calm down', 'get a grip' or questioning what she saw are being totally stupid. 'Like any other dog', ffs I despair.
She saw a dog loose in a residential area, and even of it was not a XL bully, it clearly looked of a similar breed, and given how much they have been in the media recently, they arent hard to identify.
These types of dogs can kill, unless you've been living under a rock, and since the dog was loose it doesn't exactly indicate good and responsible ownership.
People minimising on this thread are the same as the types of dog owner who say 'oh he's fine hes friendly' when their out of control dogs start jumping up at people in parks, as if that makes it okay.
I have a long scar on my thigh from a dog bite aged 8 and I still remember the strength of the grip.
Op I wouldn't be taking any chances, I would call the police on a non emergency number. They might not be able to do anything right now, but if you or anyone else sees it loose again and let them know, they might be able to do something.

JMSA · 04/04/2024 22:47

Poor dog (that's nothing against you OP, and your reaction is understandable!). It's just that they didn't ask to be born or to have eejit owners Sad

OldTinHat · 04/04/2024 19:11

It's a dog, not a man eating lion/dinosaur.

Did it chase you? Eat your children?

Or was it just a dog?

But they do attack/kill men and women and children. Do you not read the news?

I have three dogs, but I think all big dogs should be muzzled in public.

That’s completely understandable and I’m sure if the posters on this thread saying the dog the OP saw did nothing had witnessed an attack they’d think differently. You must be traumatised witnessing a man being killed they way he was.

Personally I don’t understand why anyone would want to own one of these dogs, they were bred to look aggressive and many are interbred. I’ve seen them described as velvet hippos and land seals on here - these things are ticking time bombs and I really don’t care how careful the owners of them claim to be. I’m glad they need to be muzzled in public.

We met a lovely one last weekend. Gentle and didn’t bat an eyelid despite many children running quite close to him. I feel sorry for the bad rep they get because of terrible owners who abuse them.

Oh, he's really friendly and just misunderstood...

These animals are bred for fighting and being unfriendly and intimidating. In the same way collies are bred to herd sheep and retrievers to retrieve ....

Do you have any grasp of basic statistical concepts? Raw numbers of attacks by breed or group are completely useless as indicators of propensity of different breeds to attack or cause injury 🙄
