You're coming to my house for dinner. What do you want to eat?

There will be plenty of booze and it won't be fancy. I'll have about an hour to cook and bugger all time before to prepare in advance. Oh and you're family so I don't have to 'impress', but I want it to be lovely too!

Toad in the hole or spag Bol , garlic bread and salad- just given kids it for lunch and it’s dinner for us…

tearfulmam · 05/04/2024 15:29

Crisis & dips will do Me!

Lasagne is lovely, but not something you can knock up in an hour and you've said no time to prep. Steaks have to be cooked last minute, cost too much and an utter pain to cook for more than 4 people.
Chilli and all the bits to go with is a good shout. Fajitas would be nice. Honestly nothing that stresses you too much, if I'm coming to your house for tea, then picky stuff (cheese/ charcuterie/ bread / crackers) or bought pizza and garlic bread and salad would do. What wine / booze/ random thing do you want me to bring?

Something you can make bung in the slow cooker in the morning and leave all day that you can serve with multiple quick and easy sides to feed multiple people.

Slow cooker: chilli con carne
sides: rice, corn on the cob, nacho chips, dips

slow cooker: curry
sides: popadoms, naan bread, samosas, mango chutney etc

slow cooker: bolognese
sides: pasta, garlic bread, salad

Crab linguine, maybe Nigella's, with a salad. The quickest thing imaginable, tastes lovely, works whatever the weather, feels like a treaty, substantial but not heavy. Excellent with a lovely chilled Sancerre.

You can buy fresh crab in little pots, no need to get the crackers out.

Linguine With Chilli, Crab and Watercress

You know, I'd eaten this a couple of times and made it myself (throwing in handfuls of peppery watercress as I did so) a few more before I realised it was, give or take, the River Cafe's recipe — by which I mean to say that although the amounts and ful...

I want to be invited more than once so will always be grateful for whatever you serve that I am invited to share. I will bring aperitifs (GandT or Campari or Negroni this month) with olives. And some plonk for the table of course. Love a charcuterie board. Happy with pizza and salad. Very happy to chuck some money in for a delivery so we can all concentrate on the catch-up and not be frazzled by the cooking.

GingerPirate · 05/04/2024 20:03

I don't drink so that's that.
Nice roast chicken, gravy and some veg would do,

If its a relaxed drinks with food thing then plenty of good quality pizzas and bowls of salads. Maybe roast vegetables. More than you need so people can help themselves to slices later.

Tiramisu or some cakes sliced up for pudding.

So long as it’s edible I’m grateful that someone else has thought of the meal and cooked it.
