Work WhatsApp group during annual leave

Timbucktwo98 · 03/04/2024 10:45

New manager has created a work whats app group. I'm currently on annual leave and it's driving me mad. I've muted it but I can still see it full of messages when I use the app. I'm also finding it really difficult to ignore them and my mind is constantly wondering whats going on. Very difficult to switch off from work.

Any suggestions?

Could you leave the group and then rejoin when back from leave?

autumnboys · 03/04/2024 10:48

As you’ve tried mute and it’s not helping then absolutely leave and rejoin when you get back.

Maddy70 · 03/04/2024 10:49

Leave and rejoin thats what i do

some ideas below

I had a works phone and my own when I worked
I always turned my works phone off as soon as I was leaving the office/HQ or claints home if it was the last work related thing that day - manager and others were staggred by this - I told them politely to naff off as I don't get paid when I stop working

However, I felt like you re emails, but never looked at my works as never logged in

Leave and re-join when you return from leave. This is a well established precedence at my workplace. We have the rejoining link in the group description to make it easy.

However, whatsapp functionality has moved on you now have the option to archive (apols if you know this but you can archive by clicking "leave group" and then it is presented as an option) it then files group in a hidden bit of WhatsApp.

One of my archived groups currently has over a 1000 messages but they don't appear in my unread messages total. All I see when I open WhatsApp is that I have two threads archived.

Archiving is easier to do without making a fuss (ie needing to set up a re-join link) and has the advantage that you can read the messages that arrived when the thread was archived if you want to.

Get a separate work phone. I did that and I switch it off outside of work time. It's a godsend for my mental wellbeing!

ouch321 · 03/04/2024 10:51

This is why I'm not a fan of using personal phones as work phones. They ought to give you a handset.

Startingagainandagain · 03/04/2024 10:53

I have always refused to join WhatsApp work groups if I was not provided with a work mobile...

lightbulb101 · 03/04/2024 10:53

Archive the chat, then you won't see it either

TwirlyWhirlie · 03/04/2024 10:53

Just don’t look 🤷‍♀️ I was dying to know if we’d gone on contract (I’m the Project Manager) but I knew I’d be gutted if we hadn’t so I thought ignorance is bliss! I checked as soon as we got back, which was the day before my first day back. We’d gone on contract and I was really happy. Had we not gone on contract, I’d have been in work mode so I just left it!

TenPenceMix · 03/04/2024 10:55

Mute then archive.

Capmagturk · 03/04/2024 10:56

I archive mine on holidays.

Timbucktwo98 · 03/04/2024 11:00

Brilliant, thanks so much for the archive suggestion. I didn't know about that. I'll have a look now.

Mine is permanently muted and archived. Would recommend.

babybrum · 03/04/2024 11:12

Archive the chat they won't know you have done it and you can move it back after. I do this. Hope it helps you switch off

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 03/04/2024 14:50

Do people not have a sperarte works provide mobile? If not, why not?

Waitingforeverandaday · 03/04/2024 15:25

Archive it

MuggleMe · 03/04/2024 15:26

You can archive it and set the settings so it stays there even with fresh messages.

Noyesnoyesok · 03/04/2024 15:28

Just talking about this today. Absolutely no way would we be given separate phone .Shall look at the archive alternative!

Iggityziggety · 03/04/2024 15:31

lap90 · 03/04/2024 11:11

Mine is permanently muted and archived. Would recommend.

Mine was too as I'm part time. Then people started @ing me on my days off asking me stuff, which means you get a notification anyway.
So I've left and rejoined on my work number. I thought it was a bit odd everyone used their personal number when I started but assumed it was for chit chat out of work or I never would have added my personal number!

coastalhawk · 03/04/2024 15:33

Archive it! You can un-archive at any time but you cannot see it anymore.

gettingolderbutcooler · 03/04/2024 16:06

Archive then un-archive!

EventuallyDecluttered · 03/04/2024 16:13

Yes archive, we only use ours for chat and minimal actual work stuff and we don't have work mobiles as we don't need them for anything else but I still don't necessarily want to see it when I'm on holiday.

Heatherjayne1972 · 03/04/2024 16:33

Also You can set it up so that no one can add you to a group with asking you first. I have that set up.

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 03/04/2024 16:37

Leave and never rejoin

It work, you don't have to be part of this if you don't want to

If work want you to then they need to provide a phone.
