Does your council collect bins on Bank Holidays?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/04/2024 14:11

Ours does. Which means that, yesterday morning, the bin lorry arrived at 6.15am to empty the recycling bin and the garden waste bin lorry came along 30mi uses later.

So no lie in for us.

We used to live somewhere that didn't do a bin collection on Bank Holiday, which was a pain because everyone's collections got moved around for about 3 weeks at Christmas.

Where we live now, our bins are collected on Mondays and, as we're at the start of the round, we have a very early collection. So every Bank Holiday Monday we fail to get a lie in.

Anyone else share my pain?

It did this Easter Monday but that was the first time.

Previously, a Bank Holiday meant bin days were shifted forward a day for a couple of weeks.

Shodan · 02/04/2024 14:42

We do, and also have a very early collection, but we all put the bins out the night before. Can you not do this?

EventuallyDecluttered · 02/04/2024 14:44

Yes, we are a Monday collection too and they come as usual but we always put them out the night before so it isn't a problem unless we are away.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 02/04/2024 14:45

Our council don't do bin collections on a Monday so it's collection as usual.

PolarPandaBear · 02/04/2024 14:46

No but I wish they would

Corinthiana · 02/04/2024 14:47

Yes, every Bank Holiday, they're brilliant.
They come at about 11am.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 02/04/2024 14:50

Our council organised the collections for Tuesday- friday with Friday being used as a catch up day. Mondays they do specialist collections, bulk collections that sort of thing so bank holidays does not affect it

NigelHarmansNewWife · 02/04/2024 14:56

Yes. I cannot believe you are complaining your bank holiday lie in was disturbed by the bins being emptied.

gingercat02 · 02/04/2024 14:58

Yes, but not Christmas day or boxing day. All others, our garden bin collection is Monday so often on a BH

ErrolTheDragon · 02/04/2024 15:02

I'm glad ours sticks to normal schedule except directly around Xmas. Though ours is Friday and 7am - I'm impressed by them doing this come rain, wind or shine.

SarahLHs · 02/04/2024 15:03

Yes except for over Christmas and New Year

Blanketpolicy · 02/04/2024 15:10

Our collections are on a Thursday/Friday so are only impacted at Christmas.

Bin lorries come into our cul-de-sac, make a racket, reversing horn goes off for ages as they try to manoeuvre back out - 3 times early on recycling day. It wakes me temporarily but doesn’t stop me getting a lie in because I just ignore it and go back to sleep.

Boredmum24 · 02/04/2024 15:11

We'd love it. Ours have intermittently been on strike. I think our recycling has been emptied once since Christmas

TabbyM · 02/04/2024 15:15

Yes but manage to sleep through it.

Yes... snuggle back down glad it's not me having to be outside.

Except if I've forgotten to put the bins out the previous night and throw on clothes and race down to get at least one of whichever pair it is that week out.

mitogoshi · 02/04/2024 15:29

Yes, except Christians day

😂
I have a lovely neighbour, in his 80s, who puts everyone's bins in and out! He's a boon.

gamerchick · 02/04/2024 15:33

Ours are still striking. Ongoing since Christmas.

So we are not sharing your pain, just a different sort. Would you like to swap problem?

isitbananatimealready · 02/04/2024 15:35

No idea. They do our village on Wednesdays.

We do put them out the night before, but its the noise of the collection at 6.15am that wakes us up

Ours rotates and bumps; previously garbage pick up was Friday. With Good Friday being a holiday it would be bumped to Monday with Monday being a holiday as well (Easter) it went to today Tuesday. It will now stay every Tuesday until the next holiday bumps it to Wednesdays.
Add to this garbage and recycling alternates, organic waste gets picked up each week from Feb-Dec but every two weeks with garbage during Dec-Feb. Absolutely Insanity for which I pay a solid amount for terrible service.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/04/2024 15:44

can't you? I'd have just liked not to be woken at 6.15am. We are on a corner/junction of a cul de sac and they reverse round the corner - so lots of beeping - and then they empty the recycle bins one by one which is quite a lot of crashing around. So the noise goes on for a good 10 minutes. Then they disappear and the garden waste bin lorry appears a few minutes later and does the same thing. It's quite difficult to sleep through all of that.

People on here moan if builders start work before 8am on a normal working day so I don't feel bad about moaning at a 6.15 wake up on a BH.

Im not in the UK and here sometimes the bin lorry comes in the middle of the night, like 3am middle of the night! Luckily I fall back asleep easily whatever the time. They always come on public holidays as it's quite customary to hand out tips on those days so the workers don't want to miss out on that.

If you're up and can't go back to sleep then I'd make the most of an early morning - get up and enjoy the peace and quiet and then have a post lunch bank holiday nap instead of a lie in.

Dontcallmescarface · 02/04/2024 17:18

Ours gets done on a Friday but on Bank Holidays it's pushed to a Saturday. All our bins were emptied before 8.30 am Easter Saturday and it's just the recycling next Saturday so that will be around 7.45 am. Only 1 lie-in next weekend for us.

LlynTegid · 02/04/2024 17:27

Mine do. Newer refuse collection vehicles are quieter especially as reversing is required.
