BBC axes hit sitcom Motherland (yahoo.com)

According to Yahoo News. I am dumbfounded. One of the best comedies they've made in recent years and they are axing it! WTF!

BBC axes hit sitcom Motherland

The corporation faces a huge deficit this year.

I liked it but I think the Christmas special sort of completed it and it's probably time to wrap it up.

I agree. It's had a few series and Christmas specials so they had to end it somewhere.

Yes I thought it was axed back then, I loved it but it is not one that could go forever I don't think

Maybe they think it's better to quit while you're ahead (which to be honest it often is).

MississippiAF · 02/04/2024 10:31

It was great but it was done.

Agreed

I think it appeals strongly to people in those crazy primary school years, and there will always be a new generation of people at that stage, so repeats will do well.

TonTonMacoute · 02/04/2024 10:35

I don't see how it could have gone on, and I suspect the writers felt it had come to an end anyway and may even have planned it that way.

Did love it though...

Squirrelsnut · 02/04/2024 10:37

I'm glad. It won't putter on for more series in inferior form.

MeinKraft · 02/04/2024 10:41

And yet Not Going Out is still going strong! I actually love Lee Mack so I'm not complaining.

Bookworm1111 · 02/04/2024 10:43

I'm not surprised in the least. It couldn't have continued in the same vein because the oldest kids would be at secondary by now and the younger ones not far behind, so the school gate mums schtick is no longer be relevant.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/04/2024 10:50

I think they could have squeezed one more series out.

I lovedthis programme. It feels a bit like Father Ted, it just needed one more series. Although l appreciate obviously Father Ted couldn’t!

tulipdoo · 02/04/2024 10:52

I think another series could have worked.

How come the likes of Mrs brown boys keeps going on forever? Motherland is so much better

Devonco · 02/04/2024 10:53

Was there a 2023 Christmas special?

SirChenjins · 02/04/2024 10:57

I think it was the right time to finish it, much as it pains me to say it - it was brilliant. As @Bookworm1111 says, the days of meeting at the school gates was going to come to an end soon.

This👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Mrs Browns Boys is such shit.

Teq · 02/04/2024 11:03

Loved it and happy to see it going while the quality is still great, rather than to let it get to a stage where it’d limp along.

I think some of the kids were due to start secondary school too which would have changed the dynamic.

Mrs Brown's Boys is shit but huge numbers of people watch it. Probably the people who watch mostly terrestrial TV. I stopped watching Motherland because when I was out of the London school gates/PTA insanity, I didn't want to be reminded of it!

SnowFrogJelly · 02/04/2024 11:08

Aww I love Motherland
Probably run its course though

WhereIsMyLight · 02/04/2024 11:09

I thought the last Christmas special was the final one as it brought some storylines to a natural conclusion.

I much prefer things to actually end. Especially if they end well. I don’t like the aim for 10, 15, 20 seasons approach that a lot of shows have. You either have the likes of CSI and you can predict each episode and season formula or you have something like The Big Bang Theory which dips in the middle and is a real struggle to get through.

But they could have done 1 more serious with some grumpy Y7’s forced to sit in the cafe.

SnowFrogJelly · 02/04/2024 11:09

Can't stand Mrs Brown's boys!

BIWI · 02/04/2024 11:09

This is going to happen more and more often, given the cuts that the BBC are having to endure. The ensemble cast must be expensive too.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/04/2024 11:12

One more series would be good.

It'd be quite funny to bring a few new mums in and having Julia deal with her kids as teens. Ann's kids are still young too, school gate age and I thought maybe Meg's kids were still primary school age. I also didn't think Amanda's kids looked that young?!

ChessieFL · 02/04/2024 11:17

I agree with others that it’s run its course. It’s all about the interaction between the parents and you just don’t get that at secondary in the same way you do at primary. Plus there’s been too long a gap now since the last series/special - if it was set in real time surely some of the kids would be in year 9 now and backdating it to follow straight on from the last lot wouldn’t work either. So while I loved it and wish they had done another series straight after the last one I don’t think it would work now.

Igmum · 02/04/2024 11:36

Noooo - couldn't they have had more kids? Or introduced more characters with more kids? Agree it is best to leave while you're ahead but am I being paranoid in thinking they wouldn't have axed a show with mainly male characters so readily?
