BBC axes hit sitcom Motherland (yahoo.com)

According to Yahoo News. I am dumbfounded. One of the best comedies they've made in recent years and they are axing it! WTF!

BBC axes hit sitcom Motherland

The corporation faces a huge deficit this year.

All of them still had kid/s at primary school though, so the school-gate drop offs would have continued.

becauseidonwantto · 02/04/2024 11:48

We could have had one more series! Bloody loved it!

I think it has come to a natural end.
I am really glad it is not going to be one of those series that limps on for ever until it is practically being resuscitated each episode instead of dying.

Clawdy · 02/04/2024 11:56

I'll miss it, it's one of the few comedy series I watch.

ANutAsBigAsABoulder · 02/04/2024 11:58

It’s a real shame. The size of the ensemble cast, external filming and hiring real houses must have made it very expensive to film and edit though.

You might hate Mrs Brown’s Boys but it’s very popular and will cost a lot less to film with everything based on one stage set and a small cast.

I don’t watch MBB but my elderly parents do. The BBC has to be all things to all people and they’re doing it on less and less money. It’s awful for the creative and technical crews too. It’s a real worry that creative arts are constantly being chipped away at as though they have no value, when they really do. Not just economic value, either.

weareallqueens · 02/04/2024 12:22

I actually get that there's an audience for Mrs Brown's Boys but who is watching Not Going Out? The characters are so dislikable and selfish and obviously hate each other. I normally love Lee Mack but Not Going Out is painful.

Magicpaintbrush · 02/04/2024 12:37

I feel like another series would have wrapped it up properly. The last Christmas special didn't really feel like the end? And it was sad. It would have been nice to end it on a happier note. I think there was one more series in there which would have tied up loose ends better. Would have liked to see Kevin start dating, or Julia have an epiphany after losing her mum and start being less self absorbed. Would have liked to see what Liz did next, or Anne go back to her power job etc. Such a shame.

They could possibly have squeezed in one last series or special but that would have been it. It's really about the parent/school dynamic, which is already different once the first child goes to secondary.

And yet Silent Witness has been hobbling along for years, with its utterly preposterous story lines. 🤷‍♂️

lapochette · 02/04/2024 12:50

Aw no I loved Motherland. I agree about quitting while ahead but think they could have got one more series out of it. Hopefully we get a Christmas special in a few years time like Gavin and Stacey.

Carouselfish · 02/04/2024 12:50

Meh, it was okay, but highly irritated by both the man's voice and the woman's face, so not much of a loss to me.

I think that's very unfair...

... on shit

SagaNorensPorche · 02/04/2024 14:30

Ah wish another channel could take this on for a new series. I know the primary years are done but would've been great to see the characters develop further. I know many didn't like the last Christmas special but I thought it was hopeful and appeared to be setting up deeper friendships. Even Mrs Lamb could've had a spin off. Pah! It was never about the kids anyway.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/04/2024 14:33

LaPalmaLlama · 02/04/2024 10:03

I liked it but I think the Christmas special sort of completed it and it's probably time to wrap it up.

I agree

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/04/2024 14:35

Perhaps Amanda could've got pregnant through her fling with Kevin and had a final child? She wouldn't though, her figure, the shame of Kev being the dad!

It was so nice that Amanda and Julia finally found some common ground and Amanda got some balls and told her own mother (gam gam) exactly what she thought about her!

Newgirls · 02/04/2024 14:39

I think they wrapped it up perfectly

I’d love to see the characters tho in the teen years. A lot of comic potential there.

Devastated999 · 02/04/2024 14:42

WhereIsMyLight · 02/04/2024 11:09

I thought the last Christmas special was the final one as it brought some storylines to a natural conclusion.

I much prefer things to actually end. Especially if they end well. I don’t like the aim for 10, 15, 20 seasons approach that a lot of shows have. You either have the likes of CSI and you can predict each episode and season formula or you have something like The Big Bang Theory which dips in the middle and is a real struggle to get through.

I agree, it is a short and perfectly formed comedy. I had assumed that it had come to an end with the last episode, as it was so poignant and perfect.

I hate it when great comedies are milked for so long that they become mediocre.

We can re-watch the episodes and enjoy them as they are.

SagaNorensPorche · 02/04/2024 14:43

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain definitely. I thought the angry squirrel car scene was so well done. Such a shame to see it go.

SnowFrogJelly · 07/06/2024 01:18

👏

Pixiesgirl · 07/06/2024 01:24

Eh I liked it, but it ran its course. Better to not overstay (like the royal family specials which were a bit crap)

sofasofa42 · 07/06/2024 05:04

I read some where that it was a logistical nightmare getting the cast together to film. They were all too busy and successful . For me that made complete sense because all of them are in films and tv . I guess they just decided to leave it where it was . Honestly the funniest thing on tv for a long time. I will re- watch it tomorrow I think.

rwalker · 07/06/2024 05:34

Whilst disappointed it great that they’ve done it
too many times they let things run and run and end up killing it
each to there own but mrs b boys was funny at first but it run its course but they kept flogging it last few series shit

CurlewKate · 07/06/2024 12:00

I must be the only person in the country who didn't like it much. I agree it was funny, but I was uncomfortable laughing at stereotypes of women.
