just looking advice really , I’ve been under a dietician for years then discharged when I gained weight in pregnancy (was really just my bump) but now since having my daughter I’m back down to my pre pregnancy size (7 stone) and really struggling to put weight on . I was given ensure drinks , they helped a bit but not a lot . Even a few years ago I’d eat the biggest amount of crap everyday , and gain absolutely nothing . I’m still like this now at the age of 22 , and it’s so frustrating cause I just want to gain some weight , healthily .
if I eat too much fat in one meal I feel quite full and don’t want any more food, but then I’m being told I need to eat full fat everything so I try and force myself and have I gained anything ? No.
surely if eating loads of sugar , fat etc isn’t making me put on weight have I hope ? I use healthy fats low like extra virgin olive oil, Greek yoghurt , pumpkin seeds etc

Back to GP and dietician I think. Keep cooking with butter, full fat cream and oil etc.

Fats are good for you honestly

Keep you fuller for longer and keeps your hair and skin looking good

It's the hydrogenated fats you want to avoid which are in biscuits 🍪 Biscuit and margarine because that stuff is bleurgh

Butter, cream, vegetable oils, fish oils are all really good for us because they're natural

So embrace the good stuff and you will glow from within

Have you had your thyroid checked in case it's overactive? Plus any other possible medical causes?

Have you counted the calories that you're eating to check that portion sizes are sufficient. Just about every case of 'can't gain weight' is due to tiny portion sizes/skipping meals or a medical condition.

And cheese is excellent

A baked potato with butter and cheese and some salad or veggies makes a great healthy filling meal

Hermittrismegistus · 01/04/2024 15:02

Have you counted how many calories you're truly consuming during a week? Most very thin people I know that struggle to gain weight seem to overestimate how much they are eating over the week.

UpsideLeft · 01/04/2024 15:02

You need the dairy for the calcium for your bones too so you don't get osteoporosis later on.

Yeah I had my thyroid checked and it was normal !
I always feel like I eat a lot but probably all low calories like veggies etc cause I wanna eat healthy and see most food as unhealthy (I have orthorexia) but I’m really tackling those thoughts and trying to eat more

I usually do , I use my fitness pal and only eating about 1.5k or sometimes less , but when I look at all the food I’ve eaten you’d think it was loads more !

For a smallish fee I will let you live with me for a month. You'll eat what I used to eat before I lost weight. I guarantee you will gain a lot of weight.

Lovemusic82 · 01/04/2024 15:33

There are healthier fats you can eat. Avocado, nuts, meat high in fat, higher fat content yoghurts, salmon, cream etc…

I love eating vegetables too, things like cauliflower cheese would give you a higher calorie intake? Chuck some broccoli in there too.

You need to change to energy dense foods then

Don't have any veg until you have had lots of the other stuff - so if 4 meals a day ( as more smaller meals might be easier for you) - you need say 500 calories per meal -

If feels to you like you eat loads but 1500 isn't loads really - just what you are used to

Think about what meals you like and perhaps we can tell you what weight of each ingredient might be sensible - healthy balanced and sufficient

Here's my food ideas for you!
Do you like food like spaghetti Bolognese, macaroni cheese, shepherd's pie, sausage/veggie sausage and mash.
Chicken Kiev, with a few boiled potatoes and veg.
Homemade chicken soup with veg, a crusty roll with butter on it.
Cheese sandwich for lunch
Chicken and avocado salad with seeds/Caesar dressing.
Chicken and broccoli pasta in a creamy white wine sauce .
Pizza
Beans on toast, poached egg on top.
Jacket potato with chilli, add butter for calories.
Roast dinner, gravy , veg , roast pots.

Get really good tasty butter like the Cornish or french one, tastes so good and it's worth the calories.

scoobysnaxx · 01/04/2024 16:56

Drink your calories. Much easier than consuming lots and lots of food if you can't manage it.

Make smoothies/milkshake type drinks with full fat milk/avocado/nut butters etc.

Maybe have a smaller portion of low calorie veggies and a bigger portion of potato/sweet potato/carrot etc. More starchy veg.

Is your BMI underweight? Or are you just wanting to put on weight for yourself?

This isn't much at all!

What specific advice did your dietician used to give you to put on weight?

You need to work out your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure)

tdeecalculator.net

Once you've entered your info, you scroll down, it has 3 headings

  • maintenance calories (amount needed to maintain your weight)
  • cutting (calories needed to lose weight -500)
  • bulking (calories needed to put on weight +500)

Use the bulking calorie count as a guide.

I'd recommend using a food diary or 'my fitness pal' to track everything.

If you're in a calorie surplus consistently you should put on weight.

As I said above, try drinking your calories!

My bmi is 17.7 which is the underweight category for my age and height. I really hate how my ribs are always showing when trying to wear anything I like ! It really puts me down .

You appear to have an ED. Would help from a mental health point of view help you more than a dietitian?

I know how frustrating it can be. My weight loss was caused by serious illness and it took me two years to get back to anyway normal. I relied on full fat everything and Ensure Plus as I couldn't swallow properly.

THisbackwithavengeance · 01/04/2024 18:30

Come on lovey. You know how to put on weight.

First of all you say you eat loads and can't put on weight.

And then later on, you admit to eating no more than 1000kcal a day which unless you eating a thousand calories worth of lettuce, is not "loads" of food. And you know that.

What are you looking for from this thread?
If you've got an eating disorder, you need to go back to your GP.
