What’s your unpopular opinion?

Weddings. I’m just not a fan. I’m delighted when friends get married but generally find the day long and boring. Yes, I’ve been to some absolutely beautiful weddings and had a lovely time but generally speaking, I’d prefer to be doing something else.

That’s my unpopular opinion!

Many people working from home are taking the piss.

Gentle parenting basically means either not setting boundaries for children or endlessly negotiating.

Many kids are fat because of endless snacking.

The primary school curriculum is far too broad and doesn't focus enough on the basics or children's wellbeing and resilience.

Parenting classes should be compulsory.

Most dog breeders are in it for the money, even the ones who claim they do it for the love of the breed, to keep a breed line going etc.

Designer clothes, bags etc are overpriced shit sold to people with more money then sense.

Wall colour/ decor fashions are shit and all date.

Unless they have been abusive to you, you should want to help look after your elderly relatives.

Doctors, nurses, teachers, carers and childcare providers should be paid more.

People who commute to work should be paid more than people who WFH.

Most MIL are not that bad.

Justmuddlingalong · 30/03/2024 21:06

The over generous sick pay policy for NHS staff is ripe for abuse and should be overhauled.

@VolvoFan is Canadian system workable then?

there must be some way that’s better than what we have now and better than US system ( which is fucked up)

TedMullins · 30/03/2024 21:07

I can assure the PP I wouldn’t marry anyone for money, in fact I wouldn’t marry anyone at all because I object to the institution of marriage. I like the feeling of power and independence I get being the higher earner in my relationship.

I also agree on abolishing the royal family and that as a nation we’re too fat.

UK wages - especially low and mid level, I don’t particularly care about the “troubles” of people earning 100k+ - are pitiful compared to most of Western Europe. The minimum wage in Switzerland for example equates to about 45k. If the government wants to get more people into work they should at least double the minimum wage.

We cannot sustain the refugee crisis in the UK. We cannot keep borders open indefinitely.

That's a supremely popular (Daily Mail) opinion - not an unpopular one!

You can't call yourself an animal lover and eat them.

Agreed!

If you do a pregnancy test (or maybe two or three to really make sure) and it’s positive, cautiously embrace it and wait for your scan, or even book a private one if you can afford it. All of this endless peeing on sticks to see if it gets darker or lighter or worrying that it said 3-4 weeks but now it says 2-3 is daft. Chill out and stop borrowing trouble.

(ofc I understand people who have experienced losses/difficulty will be anxious, this is aimed at people who have no particular reason to think anything is wrong but seem to go looking for one anyway)

HesterPrincess · 30/03/2024 21:10

False eyelashes, slug eyebrows and puffa fish lips look utterly ridiculous and make the wearer look like they're trying way too hard/have just escaped from a clone farm.

JMW2024 · 30/03/2024 21:11

Adult children do not have to care for their elderly / ill parents just because "they are their parents"

I agree. Inclusion is like communism- great on paper, pretty shit in reality. If it was FUNDED properly we'd be fine, but it isn't & we aren't. This is why I'm fighting with every ounce of energy in my body for my DC with ASN & uncontrollable epilepsy to have the education they need in a specialist school. It's mind-numbingly difficult.

I've been a teacher 29 years & I know how terrible the system is for any child with ASN. The powers that be forget that I know how shit it is. They also don't know how hard I'll fight, but they're starting to realise.

So many parents want their children to be in mainstream schools because they think it's best for them and for some high functioning children it is. For most, it really isn't is it and parents just don't realise. It's a fucking dreadful situation for these children and their families as well as for the other children in their classes, whose education is being annihilated too.

Lilyanna82 · 30/03/2024 21:13

It's not fair that if you've worked your butt off all your life then you have to sell your home to pay for your care.

Agree.

This is interesting? Can you elaborate more and why you have come this conclusion?

I'm ND myself and have a history of autoimmune illness. I'm familiar with the chronic illness community, spoon theory etc. One thing that I noticed is that a number of sufferers seem extraordinarily obsessed with their own symptoms, treatments, triggers, medications, supplements, doctors etc. To the point of meticulously documenting every tiny detail and sharing that with others online. It's highly, highly reminiscent of the behaviour surrounding any special interest or hyperfixations that ND individuals tend to have. This also applies to "info dumping" which is when they enjoy talking about their obsession. Many chronically ill individuals will type thousands of words describing the exact timeline of how they descended into illness, their daily symptoms, medical experiences, perceived injustices etc. The chronic illness community has an almost cult-like feeling, which again reminds me of pop cultural "fandoms" that tend to attract a lot of ND people.

I'm not suggesting by any means that the symptoms are all in their heads, but it's an unfortunate subset of misplaced ND fixation. There's already a higher rate of MH issues like OCD, health anxiety, phobias amongst ND individuals, combined with a higher rate of fatigue, autoimmune illness or connective tissue disorders that produce real symptoms. It's also not surprising that Long Covid tends to strike middle-aged women...that's typically the demographic that's too busy with children/home/work to develop typical ND hobbies or hyper-fixations. Men tend to be given more freedom to pursue their own interests from a young age (video games, sport, vehicles etc) and carry that over to their adult life.

catmomma67 · 30/03/2024 21:15

religion... now i'm not saying you must introduce religion into your childs life, but it irrates the life out of me when parents say 'oh i'll let them decide when they are old enough'.... how can they decide if you dont offer them the choice?

@VolvoFan is Canadian system workable then?

The Canadian system is a very similar structure to the UK NHS. It's entirely state funded, but the mismanagement of taxpayer money is a tad worse, since they offer Medical Assistance In Dying (MAID). They can't afford to treat people anymore, particularly the old and frail. Canadians are skint, food prices are incredibly high and many Canadians are rummaging through rubbish bins for food. Our Canadian friends are having a seriously tough time with the socialist system under the current PM Trudeau.

and if you have never worked a day in your life.. its all paid for you

WaitingfortheTardis · 30/03/2024 21:16

I loved being an only child and would definitely not have wanted a sibling.

Cadbury's chocolate still tastes amazing.

Long flights with children are better than short flights with children.

Botox never looks great.

Yep!

AlwaysGinPlease · 30/03/2024 21:17

Oh it's so good to see others think the below too -

The Beatles were indeed shit
Transwomen are not women they are men
Surrogacy/buying babies should be banned
If you eat/wear animals/animal products you're not an animal lover
Women mostly look bad with short hair
Inclusion is turning people the other way
Big isn't beautiful it's unhealthy and "real women" are all sizes not just overweight

So many more!

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 30/03/2024 21:17

Josette77 · 30/03/2024 20:54

Women who are obsessed with trans women are privileged.

Feminism is white centric. White women forget how privileged they are.

Yes, yes, yes

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 30/03/2024 21:18

@Talapia I have nodded in agreement to every word you said!

Also while Oppenheimer the movie was great, it turned my stomach a little to see them all patting themselves on the back at the awards cermonies with no mention of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki victims. In general the USA seems to have forgotten this inhuman act was the only reason they won a war.

ChoccieEgg49 · 30/03/2024 21:19

Same! Weddings. I find them tedious, long, exhausting and mostly samey.

Absolutely! It's disgusting.

I agree. I think those who say otherwise have convinced themselves of that because they think it sounds cool and sophisticated to only like more expensive chocolate .
