DH remember the Coronation [E.R!] He was 6 and dressed as a zebra crossing for the street party. He remembers the big crush to cram into the sitting room of the one family that had a T.V. at the time and how everyone was taking turns to get a glimpse of the new queen. He lived on Millbank at the time and I think watched the parade all waving flags etc.

1979 Iran hostage crisis. I was 4-5, but our little town was covered in yellow ribbons tied around trees so it made a distinct impression.

Decimalisation in 1971. Just before I turned 5.

Same first memory but I was 6. I remember telling my mum that the ‘man’ was trying to rob her and she telling me it was the new money.

Dunblane then Princess Di. I was in my early teens so hadn't paid much notice of the news up to that point.

RobbieisWright · 30/03/2024 17:26

I have a clear memory of looking at the front page of my parents newspaper, it must have been in the earlier 80's and there was a photo of a teenage girl that had been found murdered. She was wearing a headband and was called Claire I think but can't remember the surname?
I must have been young and my mind couldn't comprehend why a young girl would be killed
Im off to google now

Well, now I feel old. Fall of the Berlin Wall I think. I was 8. I didn't understand entirely what was going on but I did know that people had been reunited and became quite fascinated with the whole thing. Berlin is now one of my favourite cities to visit.

Craftysue · 30/03/2024 17:27

Birmingham pub bombings - I lived not far away and it was a very frightening time - a man blew himself up in my city a few days before.

Turkey invading Cyprus.

President Nixon and Watergate.

The Vietnam War.

Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia

Idi Amin kicking Indian immigrants out of Uganda.

Famine in Ethiopia.

Henry Kissinger. I never really understood who he was, or what he did, but the news seemed to mention him endlessly.

KnickerlessFlannel · 30/03/2024 17:29

Dunblane. We all held hands at primary school and that has stayed with me.

WatchoutPetunia · 30/03/2024 17:30

Aberfan I remember asking my dad why mom was crying. She was watching a newsreel in black and white - I remember the words the newscaster said - the mountain that moved - ijust couldn’t understand it and now can’t comprehend it .
