The start of the Falklands War.

The Aberfan disaster. I remember my mother crying.

DisforDarkChocolate · 30/03/2024 17:01

Strikes in the 70s and queuing for bread etc.

Elvis dying is the first thing where I remember where I was when I heard the news.

Elvis dying in 1977. I remember asking my Mam why she was so upset ss she didn't know him. She bawled at me "I loved him!!!!"

CrunchyCarrot · 30/03/2024 17:02

President Kennedy being shot. I was 6. I remember the funeral too. Had to sit through it all.

OldMrsHempstock · 30/03/2024 17:02

I remember Lorraine Kelly reporting from the scene of the Lockerbie bombing, I was 7.

Yiayoula · 30/03/2024 17:02

Assassination of JFK .

My parents had been to an event at Brownies , and as we were getting out of the car at home our neighbour ( the village policeman) came running out with the news .

I remember our neighbour and Dad saying this could be really serious , and Mum shushing them and taking me indoors .

Sparklfairy · 30/03/2024 17:02

Princess Diana dying. I was 9.

Actually no. Really it was the Dunblane massacre because we had loads of keycode locks fitted at my school afterwards. I remember we were told the codes but told not to tell anyone else!

WrenNatsworthy · 30/03/2024 17:03

John Lennon being shot.

FairfaxAikmann · 30/03/2024 17:03

Technically Dunblane in 1996 but I do have my timeline muddled and for years had the Omagh bombing in my head as being before Dunblane, rather than after.
So for a long time I would have said Omagh in answer to your question

MaybeWeShouldGoToEastbourne · 30/03/2024 17:04

9/11 2001 ☹️ I was 9

Fuelledbylatte · 30/03/2024 17:04

Aeroplane crash East Midlands on the embankment- I was 9. For some reason I remember thinking- 'oh they'll stop all flying from now on then because it was such a disaster.'

ItWasntMyFault · 30/03/2024 17:05

Elvis dying

owo · 30/03/2024 17:05

The Falklands war

CheeseDreamsTonight · 30/03/2024 17:06

The Gulf War and endless coverage of famine.

MamaSnaill · 30/03/2024 17:06

Madeline Mccann here too. I was 6. I still periodically google it, off to do so now. Haven’t heard anything since that woman who made friends with a fortune teller and got a lot of press claimed to be MM.

bigTillyMint · 30/03/2024 17:06

Moon Landing - I remember watching it on bnb our B&W TV

Phrogg · 30/03/2024 17:06

When the Shah of Iran was executed. Also, the death of Elvis.

zebrugge ferry disaster

Jagsy · 30/03/2024 17:07

Princess Diana, King Charles wedding, I was 9. Born in a commonwealth country, very small town and news heavily edited to show what the president had been doing each day. But this was a big story. We even had a special event at school where we all watched a recording of the ceremony

Heatherbell1978 · 30/03/2024 17:07

I'm 46. I remember, quite close together, Piper Alpha, Zeebrugge and Lockerbie when I was in primary school.

Gatekeeper · 30/03/2024 17:07

moon landing for me...all the neighbours getting together in one house and watching it with endless cups of tea

WaitingfortheTardis · 30/03/2024 17:07

I think Princess Diana dying, though I don't remember it all that well as it didn't really mean anything to me at the time. The first news item I remember really strongly is 9/11.

User373433 · 30/03/2024 17:07

Murder of James Bulger 1993, I was 6 or 7. I remember reading it from the front of a newspaper on the dining table.
