Mine was the disappearance of Madeline Mccann in 2007 - I was 10

Execution of Ceaușescu and his wife on Christmas Day, 1989.

I also have a recollection of George Bush Sr's inauguration in '89.

I would have been 6-7.

Spendonsend · 30/03/2024 17:08

Ethiopian Famine report.

Genetta · 30/03/2024 17:08

Ah not the oldest so far.
The Sharpeville Masacre in 1960. I was eight and my aunt had just moved to South Africs so it had some importance to me. The memory stuck and whilst I was still at school I became active in the anti-apartheid movement.

Saddam Hussein and his supergun. I remember not sleeping for weeks, thinking he was going to fire it at us here in the UK. Now I read it back, we were never a target and it was unlikely that it would have ever made it past prototype stage. But I was utterly terrified at the time. I was an anxious child generally, but hardly surprising when you grow up in the 80s with the cold war reintensifying and parents who were obsessed with watching the news (and still are). Also not helped by a friend's parents letting us watch When The Wind Blows 😬

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 30/03/2024 17:08

Iranian Embassy siege for me too. It was the first time adult TV caught my attention.

NuNameNuMe · 30/03/2024 17:08

Apollo 13. I remember walking to the shops and my mum saying she was worried as some men were stuck in space.

Definitelynotwhiye · 30/03/2024 17:09

1975, Leslie Whittle being abducted and kept prisoner in a drain until she was killed, so horrific. The moniker was The Black Panther for the horrific bastard that did it, I was 10 years old.

Hellocatshome · 30/03/2024 17:09

James Bulger being murdered. I was 10 and remember my parents giving me and my brother a stern lecture on rights and wrongs and telling us we were the age of criminal responsibility which scared us so much we refused to play 'knock a door run' anymore in case we got arrested.

StrawberryJellyBelly · 30/03/2024 17:09

The shooting of JFK. I was about 5 .

newwidowtobe · 30/03/2024 17:09

The roads of dead bodies (covered) on the 9 O'clock news reporting from Vietnam. 1975 I would have been 9 .. must have had a nightmare or been sick or something as we had very strict 7pm bedtime until secondary school.. got ushered off to bed very quickly when that came on as had obviously clocked it and asked lots of questions...ended up working in wateraid in Vietnam in 1989 and remember the burned out helicopters and tanks still on the runway.

useitorlose · 30/03/2024 17:10

Elvis, 1977, and disappearance of Genette Tate which I think was the following year.

Duckinglunacy · 30/03/2024 17:10

Lockerbie. And I was born in 1985 so would have been really young.

Blueyandsocks · 30/03/2024 17:11

The Berlin Wall coming down. I just couldnt imagine a wall going across a whole city. I would have been 4 I think. It’s actually one of my earliest memories, we were in the car so it must have been on the news on the radio.

twohooverwannabe · 30/03/2024 17:11

Diana

9/11 - I was 6 and just come back from my first ever abroad holiday. It terrified me!

bigTillyMint · 30/03/2024 17:12

I feel even older - it was the moon landing!

Me too! They rolled the big tv into the school hall to watch...also vague memories of the Vietnam war on the news.

DrJoanAllenby · 30/03/2024 17:13

Decimalisation in 1971. Just before I turned 5.

Notthatcatagain · 30/03/2024 17:13

I remember every one mentioned so far. The earliest was the Cuban missile crisis, I was 8. I didn't really understand what it was about but I clearly remember dad roaring at us to be quiet when the news came on. I was shocked because he was clearly very worried
