Massive news story was princess diana death and then the next one after that was jill dando… I remember both were everywhere so it was hard to not see.

Probably the death of princess Diana, and I remember the Balkan war being on the news a lot. I most likely have a vivid memory of this as my mate’s dad was quite high up in the army and gave quite a few interviews from Bosnia. Was odd seeing him on tv.

edit to add I also remember the Leah Betts story. Was the first time I ever became aware of drugs and it scared the crap out of me. I’ve always been scared of taking drugs and now I’m wondering if it was because of this?

Aberfan (slag heap collapsed and inundated school killing many ) theoretically I was too young to have a memory but I think I remember because it was a story about children.

Princess Diana dying. I was 9, had no idea who she was and was thoroughly annoyed because there were no cartoons on, just coverage of this on all channels. We went upstairs to complain to our parents and they were very surprised!

That made me smile. In the book "Jacob Two Two meets the Hooded Fang", the young inmates of the children's prison make all sorts of things that children don't like, such as "keep off the grass" signs, bad-temper pills for teachers and parents, rain for picnics, and important news events specially timed to interrupt children's TV.

With Diana (and September 11th as well), my parents grumbled that church music had to be changed at the last moment from something uplifting to something more solemn, and somebody neglected to notice that a hymn sung just after September 11th contained the line "tower and temple fall to dust".

Princess Diana, I remember playing and my mum sat down on the sofa heavily as though shocked.

I was born in 74. I think the first major story I remember was the Falklands war.

The Pope being shit….. good catholic upbringing !

I would have only been 10 years old but I remember watching the breaking story of James Bulger on the news.
I think I recall Fred and Rose West and all of the bodies coming out of Cromwell Street.
After that I clearly remember, Dunblane, Diana and 9/11.

As I recall it was from ecstasy and her parent ,s released a picture on a ventilator ?
I'm 50 and somebody who was in my year at school was one of the first ever deaths from ecstasy ,when we were 17 absolutely heartbreaking

Falklands war, miners strikes and Cleveland child abuse scandal. In my childish logic being taken from my parents was a real fear.

elliejjtiny · 04/09/2024 09:14

I remember Leah Betts as well. We watched a video about her at school. I think her parents were campaigning to get it shown to everyone in year 11 at the time and then everyone in year 10.

I think my first memories are James Bulger being killed when I was 10. Also a boy being shot in the eye in Bosnia.

I didn’t know what it was at the time only that it was terrifying. I was very little playing on the floor the radio must have been on but was too little to care then I heard something awful a little girl screaming it has stayed with I have never forgot how it made me feel. It was the tape of Lesley Ann Downey one of the victims of the Moors Murders
