Mine was the disappearance of Madeline Mccann in 2007 - I was 10

Princess Diana dying, I was 9

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 30/03/2024 22:10

The murder of James Bulger.

I was 9 and I think it was the first time I realised bad things happen. I can remember asking my mum a number of times "why would take the baby?". I really couldn't process it at all.

The piper Alfa; we lost a family member. I also remember hillsborough- I was sat on my dads knee; he was a massive Liverpool fan and I think he was too shocked to even realise I was there

The Moors Murders in the mid 60's. One of the victims was the same age as me

Ian Brady and Myra Hindley; may you rot in hell.

MotherOfRatios · 30/03/2024 22:13

The 2005 London bombings I was 6 but I remember more as a relative was impacted. I remember Madeline McCann as well.

The first one were I could fully understand everything was the 2011 riots

Bluebella27 · 30/03/2024 22:14

Princess Diana dying ... on my great grandmas black and white telly that we had in the bedroom that had a dial to change the channels (it was ancient when I was a child but so wish we still had it) 🙈😂

The moors murderers - gave me sleepless nights!

TakingTheHorseToFrance · 30/03/2024 22:20

1980s troubles up the North. I remember asking my dad would the IRA bomb the moon. I was scared they'd do it. I live in midlands in Ireland but there was so much on the news about the troubles and we did head up north one year and i was terrified by the check points and felt really uncomfortable with all the Union Jack's everywhere (I was obviously picking up on my parents' conversation or something as I was only about 7)

Princess Diana died the day after my 8th birthday, I think probably that!

The funeral was the day my cousin got married to his French wife in France about 70 miles away from paris
We had all travelled over to France for my cousins wedding I remember watching bits on French TV.

Elvis dying

Me too.

AnneElliott · 30/03/2024 22:23

Torvill and Dean winning the Gold medal in 1984 in Sarajevo. I was 5 and was allowed to get back up and watch it as I loved skating.

After that it was Hillsborough.

Shetlands · 30/03/2024 22:30

President Kennedy's assassination 1963.

Morewineplease10 · 30/03/2024 22:33

Diana and Charles getting married.

A horrible one - a vicarage being burgled and the daughter was raped. Tge media wouldn't leave it/her alone.

Twolittleloves · 30/03/2024 22:37

James Boulger- I would have been about six. Also the Bosnian war.
Not listening to/watching the news several times a day from a young age was educational, traumatising or both!

Elvis dying. I was very small but I remember my parents watching the news coverage and everyone outside Graceland. 1977.

Same for me I was 15

treacledan71 · 30/03/2024 22:43

Another one Elvis dying. Also the Birmingham pub bombings . Was very young then but we had actually drove past there about 30 minutes before the one by the Rotunda went off so my parents were freaked out.

shams05 · 30/03/2024 22:47

James Bulger. I was 8/9 years old. I remember being horrified and really scared by it all but also remember creeping downstairs in the evening with me older brother to listen to the news whilst my parents thought we were sleeping.
