The disappearance of Genette Tate in 1978. I was 10 and even now remember the news images repeatedly showing her abandoned bike

Tensions of the Cold War building, used to have nightmares about nuclear bombs! Xx

They showed us that TV cartoon 'when the wind blows' in primary school. I had recurring nightmares about it for years.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 30/03/2024 21:47

Dunblane. I would have been 9.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 30/03/2024 21:47

Assassination of JFK and the Aberfan disaster. We lived just over the Severn bridge and my dad was one of a large group that collected donations and took them to the stricken village. I remember there being a huge amount of distress.

JenniferandJuniper · 30/03/2024 21:50

Aberfan 1966
Robert Kennedy killed 1968

Magicisuponus · 30/03/2024 21:50

Chernobyl disaster - I was 9/10 and we were warned against eating vegetables from our allotment (living on the continent then). Remember it vividly.

Cattenberg · 30/03/2024 21:50

I remember the Great Storm of 1987 because it blew part of our fence down.

If we’re talking about news stories we remember from TV, I definitely remember Lockerbie and a terrible earthquake in Armenia. They both happened in December 1988 and at the time, I asked my dad which was worse. He replied that the Armenian earthquake was worse. The earthquake killed between 25,000 and 50,000 people, but I wonder how many of the people who remember Lockerbie, remember this tragedy as well.

berksandbeyond · 30/03/2024 21:53

Princess Diana died the day after my 8th birthday, I think probably that!

Aberfan, seen on a B&W tv

Me too, i saw it in the cinema. absolutely horrendous. Prior to that the Queen's Coronation when i was around 6. Nothing in-between.

Fabvegetablegrower · 30/03/2024 21:54

When Elvis died in 1977. I loved watching his films as a kid. I remember the summer of 76 it was hot for a long time but don't remember it being in the news.

Sausagedognamedmash · 30/03/2024 21:54

The death of Princess Diana or the murder of Kate Bushell. Both happening in 1997 and I remember both clearly. I was 8. I think Diana died in the summer and Kate Bushell was later in the year.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard Diana had died. I was sat on the end of my Grandparents bed waiting for their teasmaid to make a cuppa after sleeping there the night before. Gran put the radio on for the news.

gabsdot45 · 30/03/2024 21:54

I remember the Black panther murder in 1975. I was 5 and we lived in the area. My dad actually provided an alibi for someone so I had obviously heard my parents talking about it.
I had a nightmare about it that I've never forgotten.

persisted · 30/03/2024 21:55

The fall of the Berlin wall.

I was 10 and vividly remember the footage.

theuglyduck · 30/03/2024 21:56

Definitely 9/11, I was 8 and I can still vividly remember where we were and what we were doing at that moment it came on the news.

Scifiiscompletebollocks · 30/03/2024 21:58

The pope being shot. Mega catholic upbringing

BettyOBarley · 30/03/2024 22:01

The Gulf War starting, I must have been 9/10.
I was so worried that my dad was going to get called up as he had been in the army (am sure he was probably way too old at that point! but I remember being scared about it)

JenniferandJuniper · 30/03/2024 22:03

Also Harold Shipman shocking he could kill so many people before he was investigated.

JustJessi · 30/03/2024 22:05

Diana, I was 5 and utterly heartbroken

tobee · 30/03/2024 22:06

Shane Gould and Mark Spitz at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Bit more jolly than some. Love swimming and the Olympics. Smile I was 4 btw.

mathanxiety · 30/03/2024 22:06

The Munich Olympics and Bloody Sunday, both 1972 iirc. I was 7-8.

Princess Diana- I was the same age as Harry

mathanxiety · 30/03/2024 22:08

I also remember watching bits of the Vietnam War on John Craven's Newsround. The footage was always a bit blurry.
