Do most people have a special Easter lunch.

(Assuming that it doesn’t clash with your own beliefs) but if not do you celebrate it?

Personally I’ve never known anyone who does make a special lunch but then Sunday roasts don’t seem to be as popular here as in other parts of the country.

I love roast lamb at easter. When I was growing up Easter was a big deal (Catholic), even mass was fun on Easter Sunday as we got foil covered eggs at the end!

It was one of the rare times we ate out. Daffodils and Easter eggs.

Now I cook roast lamb for the four of us, roast potatoes and red wine and then eggs for pudding.

I love the feeling of the light days, the time over the long weekend where it's not such a rush to get all my jobs done.

catin8oots · 30/03/2024 08:15

I started another thread but more traffic on here - can anyone recommend an idiot proof way to cook a leg of lamb?

SpongeBob2022 · 30/03/2024 08:21

We always get together with both sides of the family over the Easter weekend and it'll always involve meals, but that's because it's what we like doing.

No one in my family has ever worked on bank holidays so just from a practical point of view it's nice to have the opportunity to get together and there are 4 days to choose from so it's easy to see both sides.

I didn't realise some people see roast lamb as a 'must have' until a mumsnet thread yesterday!

Tintackedsea · 30/03/2024 08:21

@catin8oots

Pot roast it. Sliced onions, sliced carrots and herbs in the bottom of a deep casserole dish, stab the leg all over and stick slices of garlic (and bits of anchovies and rosemary needles if you want) in the holes. Season the lamb all over really well. Big glass of white wine in the pan. Bring it up to heat on the stove. 160 fan oven for a few hours.

Yes always. We are a Christian family so go to church on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter vigil on Saturday evening and then Easter morning. We deserve bloody good meal by then. We are also vegetarian so this year is a vegetable pie with raised hot water crust.

@ememem84 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😂

The only part that bothered me was the fact that they invited themselves and were so demanding.

I love to cook. And love a theme.

the lamb slow cooked on bbq from 6am. The garlic and herby smell was insane. Could smell it down the road…..! But so yum.

fil only eats meat and 2 veg. Which I pointed out was exactly what I’d done. Meat - lamb. And a million veg.

RefreshingCandour · 30/03/2024 08:36

Yep, always see family like at Christmas. Because we all have time off work not because we are religious.

Don’t eat lamb so we have beef. Which is a big deal as we only eat this a few times a year.

Tombero · 30/03/2024 08:37

When I was growing up we always had a roast turkey for Easter and a Christmas pudding. I was an adult before I realised that it wasn’t a national tradition to basically recreate Christmas lunch!
This year we’ll have roast lamb, but will keep the Christmas pudding part because I have lots bought in the sales.

Yearendjoy · 30/03/2024 08:38

We do. Always roast lamb here.

Godesstobe · 30/03/2024 08:51

We always have some kind of fish on Good Friday and roast lamb with Dauphinoise potatoes on Easter Sunday. We aren't religious, it's just family tradition and a great opportunity for a family get together as DC and I are geographically split.

I prefer Easter to Christmas - it's a 4 day weekend, weather is better, no stress about buying presents (just eggs), and no pressure to produce the perfect meal.

I love Christmas too though.

BresciaBike · 30/03/2024 08:53

No, never ever ever

honeylulu · 30/03/2024 08:56

Yes though we have early dinner rather than lunch so we can go out for the day. We always had roast lamb (pot roasted with red wine, garlic, honey and soy sauce) but then son turned vegan and daughter decided she didn't like lamb so in the last few years we've had individual lamb chops (plus chicken breast and nut cutlet). But this year daughter is going for a sleepover and we are having friends round so we will be doing pot roast leg of lamb again! Plus Nigella's easter nest cake which I do every year.

We have the same dinners on the other days too. Fish on Good Friday (and its always hot cross buns for breakfast). Kedgeree Saturday (not sure how that became a tradition for us) and pot roast chicken with lemon and beans on Easter Monday which I was told was a Greek Orthodox tradition. I'm not GO but the recipe is so lovely I've adopted it as my tradition too.

When I lived at home we always had a roast at Easter but it wasn't usually lamb as my mum doesn't like it.

missshilling · 30/03/2024 09:00

We tend to get together for lunch with one side of the family or the other but there is no set menu.

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 30/03/2024 09:16

BloodyHellKenAgain · 29/03/2024 19:30

Us too. I've been out and bought it this morning and I'm planning to slow cook it with lots of rosemary and garlic. At the moment I'm trying to decide between roasties or dauphenois potatoes to go with it 😋

Roasties or dauphinoise is an impossible decision. Just have both and be done with it😄

We always have a variety of different fish dishes on Good Friday and a special lunch with lamb on Easter Sunday. Easter Saturday is a take away, much needed after spring cleaning and food prep.

museumum · 30/03/2024 09:19

As kids we’d always go egg rolling somewhere nice like a big country park and have a picnic (or car picnic if very wet).
these days we do the egg hunt in the garden thing and lunch at MILs house. Definitely a getting the family together day.

daffodilandtulip · 30/03/2024 09:47

I always do a roast dinner but no more special than usual Sundays (although probably only do that once a month). DD has made mini egg brownies for pudding.

TheCourtierTapsHisFan · 30/03/2024 09:49

Dh is making a lamb tagine from the spicery with rose petal harissa. It’s going to be so delicious and about 90% less washing up afterwards.

Love the Spicery!
Making one spinach and one aubergine dish from their Curry Legend: Chef's Special tin to go with my spiced lamb tomorrow.

chipshopElvis · 30/03/2024 10:03

Yes Easter has always been like Christmas in our family, everyone gets together, emergency chairs, extra tables for a special Easter dinner. We get together on Good Friday for fish and chips as well.

bananaboats · 30/03/2024 11:54

No we don't really eat roasts or celebrate Easter. I get the holiday weekend off work but DH doesn't so just a normal Sunday for us.

Talapia · 30/03/2024 15:47

I'm working so we are deferring Easter Sunday. We will be having a shoulder of lamb cooked in red wine with rosemary and garlic, sticky toffee pudding to follow.

SameSameButDeliverance · 31/03/2024 15:29

Easter roast lamb for one! Worth every calorie and minute at the oven!

Do most people have a special Easter lunch.
Oldraver · 31/03/2024 15:39

40 odd years ago when I lived at home Easter was always a special occasion

Today not so much, quite often someone in the house is working
