How long does a tub of table salt last you?

We have just finished one, the tall Saxa one, and I can't remember how long we have had it. I think more than 2 years though. I was saying to my DH that I don't know how they make a profit, and he thought other households go through them more quickly. So, just wondering, what is others usage? Trivial I know!

Salt on salad is lovely! Especially on tomatoes
I wouldn't put it on if I was using a salad dressing but if I was using oil and vinegar then yes salt and pepper, or I would add it to a homemade dressing (unless it has Parmesan/anchovies etc)

Salt in the salad dressing, salt on any dressing, salt in my vegetable water, salt on my chips, salt in my pasta water, as above on a oven jacket, salt sprinkled on yorkie mix just as it goes in the oven, salt on my fillet steak (I sometimes switch it up to sirloin) before cooking,

I guess this sounds a lot but I think it's normal salt usage! 🤷🏻‍♀️

my mil used no salt at all and I have to say her food was bland.

im a healthy weight and I have no blood pressure issues

I also don't use LOADS I guess probably half a teaspoon a day? I don't self pour it goes in my palm and then I use that.

edited to say about a year or so for fine salt and maybe 8-9 months for flakes

@MadamVastra It is normal, ignore the anti-salt people on this thread. People who are good cooks use proportionate amounts of salt. Pending a medical reason, no need to avoid it.

The link between salt and blood pressure has been shown to be tenuous, so I don't think it's a big concern unless you actually have hypertension.

i suspect mine is probably at least 10 years old! I have sea salt in the grinder but even that hardly gets used.

I was just about to say exactly this.

MadamVastra · 28/03/2024 14:02

I mean you can still tell it's salad you know even with a bit of dressing

purpleleotard2 · 28/03/2024 14:07

'Seasoning'

Just watch any TV cook throw salt at a dish. Then ask them what their blood pressure is.

BeyondMyWits · 28/03/2024 14:25

I think people get desensitised to salt. Some things have so much they become unbearable to those of us who are hypertensive and restrict our input. Pizza delivery is just out of the question as they taste so "over seasoned".
Vegetables actually taste really nice without salt... but I only discovered that after about 4 weeks of restricted intake.

@beezlebubnicky

ignore the anti-salt people on this thread.

Why are you being so rude? Is it because you can't deal with people not doing the same as you?

I'm not anti salt but I never use the stuff because I don't like it. I don't care if others do though, how weird of you to be bothered by people who don't use salt

EndlesslyDistracted · 28/03/2024 15:00

I do think it's just what you get used to. My MIL used to salt everything heavily and it tasted like 1970s school dinners. I do use it on jacket potatoes, chips, eggs, in tomato sauces but not much else. Never in cooking water.

Padamae · 28/03/2024 15:02

I’ve got a tub of salt that I bought when I got my ear pierced at university….. about 25 years ago!

MenoBabe · 28/03/2024 19:19

Wow so many replies! I feel like I do use salt, but it still lasts ages. My DH doesn't like flakes (I do) so table salt is our default. But we use soy sauce a lot and that's very salty.

A year.

Unless it snows and then I use a couple to do my doorstep.

spriots · 28/03/2024 19:27

I am genuinely quite surprised by some of the responses. We go through a Saxa every couple of months plus some sea salt for the table.

I love seasoning of all sorts - but herbs and spices aren't enough without salt for me. Hate it when I go to someone's house for dinner and they haven't salted the food even the tiniest bit.

My GP tells me to have at it as my blood pressure is extremely low

PoorHammyHamster · 28/03/2024 20:02

Got mine when moved 5 years ago. Its got half left

TesticularHeft · 28/03/2024 20:18

@beezlebubnicky are you suggesting that the anti salt people are in fact... a bit salty?!

Bows. You're welcome.
