Holidays abroad booked this year?

How many do you have booked if any? How long do you have 2 weeks or a week?
Do you prioritise holidays for your family every year?

We go every summer for 2 weeks. Planning another autumn break for a week but seems very indulgent. We do have the funds.

2 weeks in the US at Easter (to see PILs, so not that relaxing)
1 week Cornwall in July.
1 week in Europe in August, not decided where yet.
Had a theme park weekend in UK already and we'll do another short UK break later, probably October.

That feels like a lot for me. I couldn't go away more often than that. Partly because I like spending part of school holidays doing other activities like day trips and just chilling as a family, and it always takes me a few weeks to mentally unwind from the unpacking, laundry, admin catch up etc.

Majorca for 10 nights over Easter. Then Isle of Wight for 10 nights in August! I have small kids, they love the Isle of Wight. We’re staying in a caravan by a sandy bay so lovely days paddling by the sea and eating ice cream.

toddlermam · 25/03/2024 20:12

We have a lot tbf.

We did 3.5 weeks in Thailand & Malaysia earlier this year.

3 days in Disneyland Paris last week

Going to Tenerife next week for a long weekend, then Mexico end of April

Child free holiday to Amalfi coast in June

3 days in Disneyland Paris again in July for my son's 4th birthday

Bulgaria in August (we do this every year to visit partners family)

Then Lapland in December!

We prioritise almost all of our 'fun money' towards holidays as it's something we really love as a family, however won't be doing as much once my little boy starts school in September!

reluctantbrit · 25/03/2024 20:15

Two adults and one teen, 17 in Summer

May half term is a week in France and Belgium
Summer is 6 days Berlin and one week Chiemsee in Bavaria

Maybe a short break in October half term but it depends on mocks.

ZaraEarrings · 25/03/2024 20:15

We are also going to Majorca. Never been, and really looking forward to it.

@ZaraEarrings

Majorca is lovely! How old are your kids? So much for little ones to do there. Beaches/horse & pony trekking/the little wooden tram in Solla. We only went for the first time last April (it’s not as hot and prices are cheaper,) and my two boys loved it. They’re 5 & 9

1 week in a holiday camp in the U.K.
1 long weekend in Austria
1 week on a U.K. beach holiday
2 weeks in Spain

I'm very lucky that my parents like to pay for two U.K. holidays a year for all the kids / grandkids so those are free.

The austria holiday is with a group of friends on the cheap

The Spain holiday is using a friends parents home with said friends, so again cheap!

HumphreysCorner · 25/03/2024 20:21

We used to go in the caravan as a family every year for 2 weeks in the summer then last year DH said he can't take time off so I took my DC away to Spain. This year we are doing a week in Spain next week and 2 weeks in Cyprus in August. I know it won't be long until DD1 doesn't want to come as she's 21 this year so making the most of it.

ZaraEarrings · 25/03/2024 20:22

@AStepAtaTime Teens and a pre-teen, so older than yours!
They would probably still love all that, though Grin

EwwSprouts · 25/03/2024 20:24

Croatia for a week. Love holidays but got to spend some money on the house. No I wouldn't empty savings for holidays.

DinnaeFashYersel · 25/03/2024 20:25

Been to NYC as a family 1 week

Planning to go to Mexico as a family 2 weeks

Might go somewhere else a couple for week. Maybe Europe. Haven't decided

Cornishclio · 25/03/2024 20:25

This year we have a family holiday next month in UK with DDs, SIL and DGC and 2 weeks in South Africa in September just DH and myself. I have a walking holiday in April in Dorset.

We only tend to go abroad once a year, twice at the most. We alternate long haul with short haul. Last year we did Cyprus and next year we are planning a river cruise in Europe.

Do people empty savings for holidays?

We don't. We both have relatively well paid jobs for where we live after both starting out at the bottom of the ladder. We settled on one child, our house doesn't cost a fortune to run and we own it outright after paying off a small mortgage in a South Yorkshire ex-mining town. I drive a 2010 107 and husband has a 2008 Renault, our hobbies are hill walking which is free. We have no debt and so our disposable income after savings goes towards our caravan, holidays and music festivals/gigs.

Do people empty savings for holidays?

No, I think that would be a really silly use of savings, unless people have a short term pot, specifically for holidays.

BearSoFair · 25/03/2024 20:53

Long weekend by myself in Copenhagen for the late May bank holiday and that's it at the moment!

eggchipsbeans · 25/03/2024 20:55

NatMoz · 25/03/2024 13:01

Yeah i love holidays although some are tent camping weekends for £40 for 2 nights etc.

We are a family of 3, 2yo DD.

Over Easter we are going away near Hadrian's Wall.

End of April weekend in Riga with mum and Aunty

Second bank hol May- tent camping Ingleton.

June- tent camping in Silverdale

July-1 week Jurassic Coast followed by second week Lake Garda

August- weekend tent camping Oswestry

August bank holiday- tent camping- location undecided maybe Bala?

September - IKOS in Corfu

October- cheap and cheerful week in a Lake District holiday cottage

That's probably going to be it

Oh, which ikos?
We are going to odisa, did dassia last year

reluctantbrit · 25/03/2024 21:06

NotmySundaybest · 25/03/2024 20:16

Do people empty savings for holidays?

Depends.

We have a savings account for holiday where we pay in each month. I added a big chunk of my annual bonus and some money gifted to me one year to it to ensure we had a big enough budget for a comfortable and not looking at the penny 2 weeks US holiday last year.

But otherwise it's either paid from what I have on my account or we use the specific saving account. When I booked our accomodation (2 s/c flats) they had to be paid upfront plus flights, so that was more than I had on my normal account.

We have long-term saving accounts and investments otherwise.

Outoutoutshout · 25/03/2024 16:16

Errr because it does make me uncomfortable. Let's leave it as we clearly don't see eye to eye.

I'm sympathetic to your point of view and I understand how fortunate PPs and I are to take multiple holidays, but if we can afford to do so, what is it that makes you uncomfortable?

I know you weren't asking me but we've booked Dassia for April and Aria for end of Sept. Never tried Ikos before but have heard such good things. Taking my niece and my sister in Sept and it just looks unbearable for vegan offerings (them, not us).

eggchipsbeans · 25/03/2024 21:16

@Bs0u416d
They are both fabulous, we did dassia then aria. I can't decide between them which I preferred as both so lovely.

So glad to hear. And I obviously meant unbeatable for vegans, not unbearable 🤣.

letyouberight · 25/03/2024 21:19

Prioritise holidays every year. I am not well off but I would rather make do in other areas to be able to go on holiday (old car, very few meals out, small gifts). Taking the kids to Greece for a week in summer hols and would love to take them away in the winter too.
