What did you do after your wedding?

I'm getting married next year. We've agreed a date and were talking about what leave we'd need to take. DFiance said he'd need to take X number of days off. He'd therefore be back at work only a few days after we got married. We cannot go on a honeymoon longer than a couple of nights due to childcare issues. However, it feels weird to get married one week and 4 days later be back at work. It reminds me of the first day you bring a baby home, that "wtf do I do now", but obviously much less life changing.

We went home for a night then up to the Lake District for a minimoon for two days then back to work. We didn't gone on our honeymoon until the following spring.

easilydistracted1 · 19/03/2024 21:13

We had an overnight stay then went on honeymoon a few weeks later as it was cheaper. I think we may have had a day off afterwards. You could make it a week and have some quality time at home with your spouse or date nights using a babysitter. We enjoyed getting some homeware gifts and putting them out in the house so it was like a honeymoon at home

Whitesapphire · 19/03/2024 21:14

We went honeymoon for a week which was lovely, back at work two weeks after the wedding, I only had two days off before the wedding.

My husbands family arrived in the UK on the Monday, we had a very busy holiday type week with them, we got married on the Saturday, all the family had breakfast and the evening meal together on the Sunday, his family went home on the Tuesday and he went back to work on the Wednesday.

It wasn't how I had originally hoped or imagined but with a 2 year old we were never going to jet off for a 2 weeks of blissful honeymooning anyway. We had a lovely wedding period and we were on such a high we didn't miss the time alone or honeymoon together afterwards.

Itsaweddingdate · 19/03/2024 21:35

We'll stay away for a couple of nights and then back to work and normality. I hadn't considered what happened after until we were literally discussing leave and DF said he'd take off X days. It just felt so underwhelming when the realisation sunk in we have to go back to work pretty soon after the wedding. I don't know what I expected though.

I get married this spring, am working the day before the wedding, have wedding day + 3 days off after it so we’re going away locally for a couple of nights (with DC) then I’m back at work the following day 🤷🏻‍♀️

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 19/03/2024 22:06

We had a few days at home, then went away for 5 nights I think it was, then time at home to decompress! I think I had a fortnight off in all, including two days before the wedding.

Cbljgdpk · 19/03/2024 22:09

That’s what we did; I think opening the cards/gifts when we came home was a nice post wedding thing to do and then the photos come which are nice to enjoy. I remember being a bit relieved that the whole planning for the big day part was over to be honest.

Andintotheseawego · 19/03/2024 22:11

We took a couple of days off of work and didn't have our honeymoon until 4 months later. I suffered the biggest wedding comedown 😭and completely understood why couples take their honeymoon straight after the wedding. All that effort and time and then suddenly it's over and back to normality.
Sorry this probably hasn't helped you at all

MegMarchHare · 19/03/2024 22:14

Went on honeymoon... I don't really understand the modern idea of delayed big honeymoons. Surely whatever holiday, even a short local one, that you go on immediately after your wedding, is your honeymoon - that's what I say!

That said, why is he taking so few days off work? Is there some important reason why he can't take even a full week off for his own honeymoon? Seems like something he should have thought about and prioritised - no wonder you are feeling deflated.

MegMarchHare · 19/03/2024 22:18

Oh... Childcare, I didn't read properly. Well... That's it, then, right? You'll just have to get creative and make the whole period special in smaller ways, if that's important to you. It will still be special.

JollyHostess101 · 19/03/2024 22:19

Married on the Friday, home Saturday opened cards and presents and dinner with just our folks then 2 nights in Bath and went on honeymoon 5 months later!

I had loads of time off before the wedding and was utterly bored and stressed in hindsight I would have worked until nearer the day!!

Hmmmbetterchangethis · 19/03/2024 22:20

Married Saturday, big family gathering Sunday, honeymoon for 2 weeks on Monday.

Itsaweddingdate · 19/03/2024 22:41

@MegMarchHare whilst it is childcare issues it still did feel deflating. But the reality is I also need to take only a few days as I need my leave for the school holidays. I just hadn't thought about it like that until now.

We will have a honeymoon for the weekend. We get married on a Thursday and then back to work Tuesday. I'll most likely work Wednesday morning before we travel to where we are getting married as we're staying the night before which is lovely. It just feels a bit anticlimactic I guess. Maybe we need a rethink and should go on an immediate family holiday.

MegMarchHare · 19/03/2024 22:48

A mini adventure! Think of it that way.

Would a family holiday really hit the spot, honeymoon-wise? It might have the same "back to reality" feel as going back to work, albeit in a much nicer location! Unless there's a kids club that can give you enough adult time.

PandaG · 19/03/2024 22:53

We were straight out of university and skint, and hadn't lived together before marriage, so: 2 night honeymoon in a local hotel, 1 night back at my parents', then approx a month on unemployment benefit until our graduate jobs started in the September. Was a low key but brilliant honeymoon period!

Itsaweddingdate · 19/03/2024 23:02

@MegMarchHare A mini adventure is a lovely way of looking at it. I think you're right about going on an immediate holiday. Youngest DS will only be 5 and has quite severe autism so it will be back to reality plus the stress of getting everyone on holiday, packing etc. Maybe the mini adventure, enjoy our child free weekend then back to work will actually be ok. A summer holiday will be around the corner anyway so we can chill out then without adding pressure straight after the wedding. That actually does make me feel better. Thank you.

@PandaG I feel strangely jealous but in a nostalgic way and it wasn't even my memory. I loved my care free days. I didn't appreciate them at the time.

We eloped, got married Saturday, went to Glasgow for coffee and chocolate cake afterwards then spent night on Rannoch Moor in small hotel. Back to work on Monday. Pure dead brilliant. Never told anyone.

Itsaweddingdate · 19/03/2024 23:11

@Blackdahlisthebest did you tell anyone after you got married? Also I love the fact you had coffee and cake after.

We got married on a BH weekend. Had the Tuesday off together and went shopping and then went back to work on the Wednesday and got on with our lives. We didn't end up going on honeymoon either, have two children so tricky! It doesn't matter IMO! I don't regret it. I didn't even have a bit anticlimax / come down - my wedding euphoria stayed for weeks and weeks

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 19/03/2024 23:15

I got married 5 years ago. The Sunday we had with family and friends, the Monday I had a smear test and the Tuesday I was back at work. Still haven’t been on our honeymoon. 😂

suki1964 · 19/03/2024 23:24

We got married at home so spent the next 2 days sorting the house out and getting rid of guests ( registry office, after do at home ) , DH went back to work for a few days then we had our "honeymoon"

I think for me it wasnt a big deal, Im a Virgo and also an Aspie so it really wasnt a huge deal for me, marrying and carrying on as normal after 20 years together , the day after our marriage I cooked for 10 :)

Itsaweddingdate · 19/03/2024 23:25

@BeingATwatItsABingThing life goals wedding then smear test. Love it.

The next day, my DH went to a football game with some mates and I ended up needing to go to an urgent care centre to get some antibiotics. Our honeymoon was about 4 months later.

CharSiu · 20/03/2024 00:07

We had a week in London with relatives , that may sound odd but they had come from America and Hong Kong. So sightseeing and lots of dinners out and as young marrieds they insisted on paying for everything thank you rich much older brother. We then flew to Kenya for a weeks safari and a week at the beach where I learnt to windsurf, DH was a very experienced windsurfer already. Then it was back to work, both of us had been in our new posts and relocated cities only 12 weeks before so was a little bit of a busy time.
