Mirena coil positive stories

Posting here for traffic!

I'm getting a coil put in by my GP tomorrow and have terrified myself by reading all the horror stories so can we please have a thread of positive stories?
I'd love to hear from people who've had it inserted without any problems. Entirely uneventful accounts would be nice 😊

Love mine.

I'm on my 2nd. Insertion is uncomfortable but I didn't get pain afterwards and only an hour or so bleeding and I've not had a period in over 8 years

Purple89 · 19/03/2024 19:09

I had a pretty horrid insertion so I can't help with positive stories on that - but what I can say is that I think it's really good you're prepared. I hadn't read any of the horror stories and had been told by my GP it wouldn't hurt so I was completely unprepared for how painful I found it. I think that is the wrong way around - I'd rather expect the worst and be pleasantly surprised.

Not a bit of bother
Copper coil out after 5 years easy
Marina inserted easy
Marina removed to ttc again easy...

Ttc not being successful so going back on pill for a few months then will be back on Marina!!

ChoccieEgg49 · 19/03/2024 19:13

Mine fell out 😂😂😂 bucket fanny me 😂😂😂

Abra1t · 19/03/2024 19:14

I had several and had no problems.

Bovrilla · 19/03/2024 19:15

On my second and shortly, my third

No periods
No migraines

It's worth the annoying bleeding at first for 5 glorious period free years. Mine needs changing, and my PMT and spots are worse, migraines every month with the PMT and periods are back. Light, but back. So annoying!

Coldupnorth7 · 19/03/2024 19:17

Took a while to settle. Life-changing thereafter. No periods, no mess, no pain. Clearer head, calm, so much easier all round.

I wish I'd got one years earlier. Makes hrt easier too. Had 3 now, going to angle for 1 more as good for me.

Doesn't suit everyone apparently but for me, great.

Lifebeganat50 · 19/03/2024 19:18

I’ve lost count of how many I’ve had over the 25 years I’ve had a mirena!

Never any issues…when I had the first removed as I wanted to get pregnant, I had 1 period almost straight away then was pregnant. This is the only period I’ve had in 25 years! No spotting, nothing.

I’ve never had any issues having them removed and inserted, and now use one alongside patches as HRT. Mirena Poster girl 😂😂

IHateLegDay · 19/03/2024 19:19

Thanks so much everyone! I really appreciate it 😊 I've had a mirena before but had it inserted during a surgery, under general anaesthetic.
I loved the coil but am terrified of being awake for insertion as all I've heard about is people being in agony. 🙈 I do have quite a high pain tolerance and will be taking codeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen 30 mins before my appt.

Brief discomfort, and a few cramps after nothing that some paracetamol didn’t sort.

3 mins of no dignity, 20 seconds of discomfort (not pain), and 5 years of no previously VERY painful periods, and under control PMT. Just life changing. Just changed to my second and wish I’d done it years ago instead of decades of different contraceptive pills that just messed me up.

Riverbiscuits · 19/03/2024 19:22

I’m on my second. No issues putting it in nor any pain. Took out the first to try for a baby and was pregnant within a couple of months.

gettingalife · 19/03/2024 19:22

On my third. Absolutely love it. Take paracetamol before you go and try and relax, they know what they're doing.

Be prepared for a few uncomfortable days (period pain type niggles) and tenderness but when it settles it's fab. Tbh I think my last one took a few weeks to settle so don't panic if you're a bit achy and sore for longer than a week.

The progesterone works as part of my HRT for me so another reason to love it! Change every 4 years if you use it for HRT and 5 if you're using it for contraception.

Coldupnorth7 · 19/03/2024 19:27

I was in & out in 9 mins, which included a pregnancy test as due to covid, mine was way over...

Geebray · 19/03/2024 19:28

Absolutely love mine. Two decades with no periods.

pendlepeanut · 19/03/2024 19:30

I'm on my fourth now. Had the latest one put in two weeks ago after baby number two. Yes, insertion isn't great, but it sounds like you have the right idea of taking painkillers before your appointment. Talk to the nurse to distract yourself, deep breathing throughout and lie/sit down on the bed for a while before you rush off in case you feel a bit lightheaded. At home, ensure you have some peace and quiet for a couple of hours directly afterwards. I lay down with a hot water bottle on my back/tummy as I was experiencing some painful cramps, but after about 2 hours they'd disappeared. They're totally worth the short time of discomfort in my view. Good luck!

BMIwoes · 19/03/2024 19:31

I was dreading mine, have had c sections and have low pain threshold so was really frightened. Took ibuprofen, codeine and paracetamol before. It was absolutely fine. 1 uncomfortable pinch for maybe 1-2 seconds. That was it.

Definitely take painkillers beforehand, as that will help. Do read the packets carefully as OTC codeine tablets can also have paracetamol in them.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 19/03/2024 19:31

I am on my fourth. I do NOT love having it put in and always go to what used to be called the Well Woman Clinic to have it inserted, but even given that I still think it's fab.

If they offer you a local anaesthetic then take it. Pain killers before hand and dig out your hot water bottle for after.

BlueScrunchies · 19/03/2024 19:31

Have had three, insertion is uncomfortable but nothing I couldn’t handle with pain relief and a hot water bottle, works incredibly well for me and don’t get periods on them. Was tricky to get out when I wanted a baby, took a few scans to find it but doctors were really good and when it was finally found, it came out easily (strings had been cut too short). Barely felt a thing with my latest one after having my DC 🤣

SockFluffInTheBath · 19/03/2024 19:34

I’m on my second and will get my third in the summer. My GP told me to cough for the insertion and it was fine, felt something but only for a second. Mild cramps for a few hours after but nothing paracetamol and a cup of tea (good excuse for cake) didn’t sort.

Offredismysister · 19/03/2024 19:35

I’ve had 2 within the space of 6 months.
First one done by the GP which unfortunately moved, hence needing the second. The worst part of that was the numbing spray as it burned a bit. But the insertion was fine. Second by a hospital consultant 2 weeks ago, I told him about the numbing spray so he didn’t use it & it was fine, not uncomfortable at all. I didn’t take any painkillers & didn’t have any cramping after.

HesterPrincess · 19/03/2024 19:37

I've had 6. Wouldn't be without one, it literally is a few seconds of discomfort having it fitted especially if they're experienced at doing it.

I'm now 53 and have got no idea if I'm near menopause and I'm pretty sure that the coil is to thank.

FortunataTagnips · 19/03/2024 19:44

I had one inserted a month ago. As PPs have said, it’s a few seconds of discomfort and a bit of bearable cramping afterwards, but that’s it.
I previously had a copper coil and that was the same.

Wearygirl · 19/03/2024 19:47

On my 3rd. Hurt going in but absolutely worth it!

Nottodaty · 19/03/2024 19:48

Like you first under GA second one - I swore loudly removal and it being inserted. I have quite a high pain threshold- but it did bloody hurt for a split second.

I can’t pretend it wasn’t uncomfortable but it had changed my life so much it’s worth it.
