Mirena coil positive stories

IHateLegDay · 19/03/2024 19:06

Posting here for traffic!

I'm getting a coil put in by my GP tomorrow and have terrified myself by reading all the horror stories so can we please have a thread of positive stories?
I'd love to hear from people who've had it inserted without any problems. Entirely uneventful accounts would be nice 😊

I was so nervous before mine, I cancelled it twice, read all the horror stories, cried before the appointment, rang the practice nurse before hand to ask if they had gas and air 🤣 I was pathetic! Id started HRT and couldn't tolerate the oral progesterone, so knew if I wanted to stay on HRT I needed the coil.
It was absolutely fine, no more uncomfortable than a smear, I couldn't believe how easy it was and wish I'd done it for contraception years ago!
Good luck, you'll be fine

So glad it's all been great for you!
I cancelled today and then the nurse called and convinced me to rebook so it's back on😂🙈

Aw I’m so glad you’re in a better place now! I’m waiting for my surgery for hysterectomy too I have stage 4 endometriosis. Mines was literally like yours hanging out I had no idea lol!
what a hard life for us Girls😘

Rest assured Hysterectomy was a breeze! I made the mistake of researching people's experiences and I was terrified! I couldn't have keyhole, so had full abdominal surgery. I was back at work after 8 weeks - it was a much easier recovery than I'd anticipated. Obviously, I appreciate there are some who don't have such an easy ride, but if you have any nerves or apprehension, don't- it was the best thing I ever did! Good luck 💐

Whylurkwhenicanjoinin · 20/03/2024 09:32

Definitely do it! I haven't had kids and wasnt expecting insertion to be a walk in the park and it certainly wasnt however, the ouchy part was literally seconds. Same with the removal a few years later. However the benefits were SO worth it, I had horrendous peri-menopausal periods which were all over the place, once fitted I had no cramps and never had another period again, ever - I was post menopause by the time it came out which meant I had no menopausal symptoms either. What a winner

PaddingtonsHat · 20/03/2024 09:36

Do not go to Legoland directly after insertion would be my top tip!
Saying that, I was fine with a couple of ibuprofen.
For me it felt a bit ‘pinchy ’ during insertion but was pretty quick and well worth it for the benefits

IHateLegDay · 20/03/2024 10:41

I'm off to my appointment. It's at 11 so please keep your fingers (and toes) crossed for a successful and (mostly) pain free insertion 😊🤞

Update as promised! 😊

I've just had it done. I was so nervous so the dr explained the process before hand and was really calming and the nurse held my hand.
There was 2 seconds where it felt slightly uncomfortable but I can honestly say there wasn't an ounce of pain.
When the dr said "all finished" I said "are you joking!? Was that it?? Honestly??"
😂🙈
The worst thing about the whole experience was realising halfway through that I hadn't shaved my legs 😂

I hope this thread helps anyone who's nervous and looking to find positive coil stories! I'm so glad the nurse talking me back into having it done xx

I'm glad it went well, OP. And I apologise for wittering about my issues 🙁 I should have said that I had a chat with a friend of mine who is on her third or fourth Mirena recently, as I wanted to know if it would hurt getting it removed, and she said that she'd had no pain on fitting or removal.

I had mine removed today, and didn't feel a thing 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

cerisepanther73 · 20/03/2024 13:10

@Coleoo74

Just curious wondering how did you find the copper coil experince then?

as i have heard excessive bleeding can often be in issue with copper coil...

I am on my 2nd Mirer coil and it's been a god send,
wish i had a long time ago,

I am peri menopausal so was experiencing really heavy periods in allmost constant of fear of staining my clothing...
had heaving bleeding accidents one too many,

i find inserting the mirer coil very uncomfortable unpleasant especially measuring the width of cervix aspect of it,
found it real painful
was shaking for a bit afterwards,

but glad i had it,
cause its been a game changer for me,

Great news OP. Glad it went well.

@Whylurkwhenicanjoinin is that standard then, that they take it out and leave you for a little while to see if your periods return/whether you have gone through menopause? Part of me thinks if you're all set up to have it taken out then they might as well put the new one in 'while you're there's... but then you'd never know if you did or didn't actually need it, would you?

I’m unsure if it’s standard practice but it should be, embarrassing as it is mine was in for almost 10 years as i found it so painful going in and lost my nerve, so i was peri when it went in and almost 60 when i had it removed! Otherwise yes, makes sense to fit a new one while “the bonnet’s up” so to speak!

twighlightzone · 21/03/2024 00:15

Glad it went well, I also remember thinking 'is that it?' 😆

Morning!
Just another little update - still no pain and experienced only one mild cramp yesterday (about an hour after insertion) which is amazing but this morning I feel quite nauseous and a bit woozy and am a bit emotional which is very unlike me.
I'm not someone that cries but I've been a bit teary so I'm assuming it's my body adjusting to the hormones.
It's still better than the 8 days a month of agony and tsunami periods.

Hopefully the side effects pass soon for you! You've inspired me Grin I had a mirena inserted under GA too and had it removed to have my daughter about three years ago. I've been going back and forth on getting one and the only thing putting me off was the horror stories that I had read!

Yay! I'm so glad this thread has helped 😊 the majority of mirena insertions are uneventful so that's why you won't read about them on the internet. No one is going to post about a boring, mundane appt. People only want to talk about the horrors so that's all you tend to find even though they're in the minority!

OP glad your insertion went ok, sorry you’re not feeling so good today, hopefully it’s just a hormonal adjustment and passes quickly x

rooftopbird · 22/03/2024 12:05

I'm on my second, had to have them under a general as I have a very small crevice, aka it felt like I was being sawed in half without.

I suffered with appalling pms and it helped with my moods together with eostrogel and it stopped my periods.

Had no problems and had it checked the other week to ensure it was still in place.

Hey OP, just wondered how things have been with the Mirena and if the emotional/hormonal side effects have settled down for you? (Trying to decide whether to get a Mirena)

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 30/10/2024 16:29

I'm on my 3rd Mirena. Insertion is straightforward, but I always get period-like cramps for a while afterwards. Take paracetamol before your appointment to ease things, in my experience.

IHateLegDay · 30/10/2024 17:15

@k80pie Hi! My periods are just spotting now which is absolutely amazing. It does last about 9 days for me but that's nothing compared to how they were previously.
Mentally I still feel really irritated before I'm due on and when I'm ovulating my poor husband doesn't get any rest 🤣🙈 other than that, I feel pretty normal tbh!

I hope all goes well if you decide to get one 😊

Really helpful thread, thanks. My dd (17) has been offered a Mirena to be put in under sedation (general anaesthetic i think as she is having laporoscopy at the same time for endometriosis)

weegiemum · 30/10/2024 17:28

I had a mirena after my ds was born (got it at my 6-week check) and I loved it. Totally got rid of my heavy periods and hormonal migraines, no period pain and I think it helped my depression too. It didn't hurt going in at all, over before I knew it.

The problem with no periods though was that when it slipped into my cervix and stopped working properly, I had no date of last period to date my suddenly-discovered pregnancy! Dd2 is now almost 21 (years!) old and a wonderful person in every way, so that's probably my most positive thing about having a mirena!!

3kidsaremorethanenough · 30/10/2024 17:35

Got mine in 7 weeks ago, have some spotting this week, nothing like the periods from hell I have been having. I can actually walk around and go places with a mattress between my legs!!! I'm hoping the spotting with eventually fade away to no periods at all

3kidsaremorethanenough · 30/10/2024 17:36

*without a mattress** that should say
