Mirena coil positive stories

IHateLegDay · 19/03/2024 19:06

Posting here for traffic!

I'm getting a coil put in by my GP tomorrow and have terrified myself by reading all the horror stories so can we please have a thread of positive stories?
I'd love to hear from people who've had it inserted without any problems. Entirely uneventful accounts would be nice 😊

Were a total marvel for me too; from weeks of extreme cramping debilitating pain with every period, so heavy that could get through boxes of heaviest tampons, to such light periods I barely even noticed them, without any pain apart from very very rare light ache that disappeared quickly.
yes, having it put in was painful, but no more so than the constant cramps I had with my periods , and it only lasted a short time and not for weeks at a time.
saved my life I reckon.

Mairzydotes · 19/03/2024 20:27

@IHateLegDay , you'll have to come back with an update, and let us know how you're finding it in a couple of months . I considering getting one myself.

Nameandgamechange123 · 19/03/2024 20:30

Had several I've the past 2 decades. All been fine and I'm still alive 👌
Love not having to think about contraception and I've had no very few periods.

On my third. Absolutely love it. Take paracetamol before you go and try and relax, they know what they're doing.

Be prepared for a few uncomfortable days (period pain type niggles) and tenderness but when it settles it's fab. Tbh I think my last one took a few weeks to settle so don't panic if you're a bit achy and sore for longer than a week.

The progesterone works as part of my HRT for me so another reason to love it! Change every 4 years if you use it for HRT and 5 if you're using it for contraception.

Can we get the GPs to remove after 4 then? I've been feeling terrible at 4.5 years in with general menopausal symptoms, so much so it's been suggested by private hrt clinic that I take oral progesterone in an attempt to resolve anxiety and sleep issues. Might it just be that the Mirena needs replacing then? Honestly, getting anything extra or early with my GPs wd be a miracle...

lilyathena · 19/03/2024 20:37

And to answer the question- sorry OP - having the Mirena put in for me was no problem. I took paracetamol.

Blahblah34 · 19/03/2024 20:39

Have you had kids? After kids insertion doesn’t really hurt at all

holjam · 19/03/2024 20:40

Have mine 2 years now.
Insertion uncomfortable but not painful.
Took 3 or 4 months for the spotting to settle down but great since!
None of the nasty mood swings or flat feeling on the pill.

ChoccieEgg49 · 19/03/2024 19:13

Mine fell out 😂😂😂 bucket fanny me 😂😂😂

Mine fell out also 😂😂🤣 didn’t know until was sleeping with my partner felt it went to the Gp they said don’t know why I’ve not fell pregnant it’s was literally HANGING out had to have a 4 week break incase I fell pregnant.

now I’m on nothing and doing my birth control naturally and have done for the last 3 month love it

taybert · 19/03/2024 20:47

Absolutely fine, main pain was for about a minute and a few mild cramps on and off through the day but honestly all completely manageable, I just had it done on my lunch between meetings, was fine to work afterwards.
Good luck, it’s very likely to be fine, remember than no one really bothers to go online to comment on unremarkable experiences. (Except these helpful women on this thread!)

rollerblind · 19/03/2024 20:47

I'm on my second and couldn't recommend it highly enough. No periods. No bother.

needahouseindurham · 19/03/2024 20:52

Mine makes my life SO much better!

I have no periods which were awful for me and caused so much pain and anaemia and an inability to live a normal life for a week of the month.

Didn't hurt to have put in. I'm on my second one now and intend to have one until I go through the menopause.

FloofCloud · 19/03/2024 20:53

I'm on my 3rd! They're bloody amazing! They take a bit of time to settle, sometimes a few months with some grumpy pains from time to time, but no periods except a few light days occasionally - I'm 52 now and very happy to have been using this for 12 years - using now as progesterone for HRT
Take paracetamol before you go, it isn't the most exciting 5 minutes I've ever spent with someone inside my vagina but it's well worth it!!

TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 19/03/2024 20:55

On my third. Discomfort when it goes in / out, but not much more than a smear test. Hasn’t caused me any issues in almost 15 years and so glad to not have to deal with periods.

I was told it would need replacing after 4 years if used as part of HRT. GPs don't always know this, it seems.

I had one under GA, and have had painful bleeding for 10 weeks, now wake up between 2 and 3 am every night (morning) and feel really low. It's being removed tomorrow 🥂🎉 I can't wait! Glad it's worked well for people on this thread, but OMG it's fucked my life up for nearly 3 months, horrible, horrible thing 😔

CWigtownshire · 19/03/2024 21:02

Now 59, but had my first one in my early 40's to help with heavy periods/flooding. Had light breakthrough bleeding continually for a few months (which I could cope with - much better than the heavy bleeding). Bit like having a smear done getting it inserted, just a bit uncomfortable. The only time it was painful was getting the last one out as the threads had gone "missing". Basically didn't have any periods, was brilliant!

WibblyWobblyWeeble · 19/03/2024 21:02

Having it inserted was absolutely fine.
It didn't work though and I got pregnant, one of my friends did too.

postitnot · 19/03/2024 21:04

I'm on my 3rd, no periods for 14 years! Amazing.
A bit uncomfortable to insert, but I just chatted to the chaperone which helped a lot. Didn't even have a painkiller

PurpleWhirple · 19/03/2024 21:07

Bovrilla · 19/03/2024 19:15

On my second and shortly, my third

No periods
No migraines

It's worth the annoying bleeding at first for 5 glorious period free years. Mine needs changing, and my PMT and spots are worse, migraines every month with the PMT and periods are back. Light, but back. So annoying!

This. Mine is a delight, I am evangelical about the mirena.

I had an appointment for a replacement this week but the GP cancelled it just before and said the advice has changed and now they can stay for 8 years if used for contraception rather than HRT. Bit miffed as I've had mine nearly 6 years and I definitely have some PMT returning and very light periods.

I literally thought I was the only person this ever happened to! Mine was half hanging out, so ended up at a&e as was told not to attempt to pull it out myself as could be wrapped around something internally! I ended up having a hysterectomy a few months later and it changed my life...no more periods forever 🥳🥳🥳

MumofSpud · 19/03/2024 21:22

Over the years I've had about 5 / 6
No issues
No periods etc
I had the first one done by my GP - this was the 'worst' one - ie some spotting for a couple of days
Then I went to a sexual health clinic

No side effects like cramping / weight gain etc

Had one taken out to conceive a DC and put back in again afterwards

Aw I’m so glad you’re in a better place now! I’m waiting for my surgery for hysterectomy too I have stage 4 endometriosis. Mines was literally like yours hanging out I had no idea lol!
what a hard life for us Girls😘

@BatshitCrazyWoman I'm so sorry to hear of your experience but I requested that this thread be for positive experiences only.
There are enough accounts of things going wrong online so I was hoping for myself or anyone looking to get a coil to have this to break up the dreadful stories and calm nerves.

Thanks so much ladies! So glad to hear all of your positive stories ☺️
I'll update tomorrow once it's done xx

I had my second Mirena put in a few weeks ago as part of my HRT. My first one went in under GA so I was a bit nervous about this time, but my gynaecologist reassured me that as I've had children I should be fine. I had a hysteroscopy and polyp removal first, then the Mirena was inserted. I'm delighted to say it was completely painless, certainly a very strange feeling, but no pain at all.

peribaddreams · 19/03/2024 22:43

Following with interest and to get your update @IHateLegDay I need one as I can't tolerate oral progesterone.
I hope it goes well ❤️
