Would a busy road put you off a house?

Even if it has

  • Good windows
  • Parking for 2 cars
  • 10 minute walk to the centre of town
  • Sought after location

Yes because I have a cat

midgetastic · 19/03/2024 17:54

Yes because I have asthma

GasPanic · 19/03/2024 17:54

Yes noise and pollution. Esp. if it is on a major bus route with buses going past every 5 mins. Lorries can make the whole house shake.

If it has a lot of foot traffic then also possibly crime.

Sprig1 · 19/03/2024 17:54

Yes.

EmilyPlay · 19/03/2024 17:55

No. My house backs onto a fairly busy road and I hardly notice it any more.

Bigbouncingbaby · 19/03/2024 17:55

Yes it would me . Dirt pollution noise etc done it and didn’t like it . Very disruptive to sleep in the summer . But plenty of people do !

Katrinawaves · 19/03/2024 17:57

How busy? Front door opening out onto a busy dual carriageway, yes. If it was a single lane road in a medium sized town, don’t think I’d be bothered

Toadonaroll · 19/03/2024 17:58

Yes because I don't like traffic noise and like to open bedroom windows at night if hot. Also wouldn't be allowed a rescue cat.

Needmorelego · 19/03/2024 17:59

If it's literally just traffic then maybe ok.
If there's also a Co-op, chip shop, school, pub etc on the road then it will be very busy.

Devastated999 · 19/03/2024 17:59

Yes, because I love open windows, but not fumes and noise. However, in the future, if all vehicles were electric/hydrogen, I may consider it.

WhatNoRaisins · 19/03/2024 17:59

For me being able to open the window at night during summer is non-negotiable so I wouldn't be keen.

TodayForTomorrow · 19/03/2024 17:59

Yes, it would personally put me off, BUT if walking distance to the city centre was very important to me then I would expect busy roads to be a fairly par for the course.

minipie · 19/03/2024 17:59

Yes.

There’s a house for sale near me at the moment, beautiful house, favoured location, detached with S facing big garden and off street parking (all very rare round here). It’s been sitting on the market for ages and I’m sure it’s because there’s a near constant queue of traffic outside it. Everything else is lovely. Would be snapped up if it was on a quiet road. We keep looking at it online and then we walk past and it’s “nope”.

Elphame · 19/03/2024 18:00

Yes - most definitely

MinervatheGreat · 19/03/2024 18:00

Think of summer nights & all windows open.
Traffic noise? Keeping you awake? Motorbike hammering home at 0200?
Nah, not for me.

UncomfortableSilence · 19/03/2024 18:00

Depends how busy, my road is busy however no buses etc.

It wasn't as busy when we moved in however town centre layout change meant car's diverting.

We have the tube a 5 minute walk in one direction, town centre 5 minute walk in the other, great location loads of parks etc We also invested in new windows so in the main house it's fine but we sleep with the windows open all year round and although it doesn't bother DH I don't sleep well and the road definitely has an impact, especially knobs and their popping exhausts at 4am.

Also annoys me when if there is a small queue of traffic and people just stare at you if we're on the drive doing something, feel quite on show.

Kittythecutest · 19/03/2024 18:00

Yes, it’s one of the first things I check when looking to move!

FrancisSeaton · 19/03/2024 18:01

Yes. We were looking to buy a house that was perfect in every other way but on a main road so we didn't go for it In the end

Tatas · 19/03/2024 18:01

Yes - I hate people driving past so my aim is to be as far from busy roads as possible.

I like a green outlook too, I wouldn't want to be overlooking a busy road either.

If it's a sought after location then I'm sure there will be enough people willing to compromise on the road aspect!

Thingsthatgo · 19/03/2024 18:02

My house is on a busy road, but it was 75k cheaper than the same house round the house. I expect to sell it for cheaper too - although we intend to stay here for many years, and by the time we sell electric cars will mean the road will be quieter and there'll be less pollution.
I actually quite like the busy road and all the people- I find it weirdly comforting, but I'm a city centre kinda woman.

citrinetrilogy · 19/03/2024 18:03

If I didn't have four cats I might consider it. At present, not in a million years.

LenaLamont · 19/03/2024 18:04

Yes - because of children, because of pets, because of noise, because of air quality, because of the hassle getting to and from home in traffic.

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/03/2024 18:05

How far are you from the road?

We have a very large garden so we're probably about 40m from the road. We have large trees on the edge of the property.

I Do prefer to live somewhere quieter but it is ok.

I have a Dyson air purifier to keep the dust down, it's very effective .

fleurneige · 19/03/2024 18:05

Yes, I have outdoor cats. And the best windows are no help as we sleep with window opened always. I spend a lot of time in garden- and like to hear the birds, not the road.

I find traffic noise comforting too. I especially like the buses going by.
