Would a busy road put you off a house?

Even if it has

  • Good windows
  • Parking for 2 cars
  • 10 minute walk to the centre of town
  • Sought after location

Yes, although it wouldn't be an absolute deal-breaker. I would expect to pay less than for an exactly similar house on a quiet street though.

ohtowinthelottery · 19/03/2024 18:14

Depends what you're used to. If you currently live in a rural village where you'd hear a pin drop in the dead of night then probably not. If you live in an urban area with noise 24/7 then you'd probably get used to it pretty quickly. Someone must want to live in main road houses as there's quite a lot of them.

TheSnowyOwl · 19/03/2024 18:15

Yes, definite dealbreaker for me.

Yes because I have a cat

Exactly this.

ChoccieEgg49 · 19/03/2024 18:18

We ended up moving because of the noise from the busy road by our previous home. During lockdown we realised how we enjoyed the peace and quiet! We couldn't leave windows open in summer because of the road noise and it seemed so much louder once lockdown was lifted because we'd got used to roads being quiet. We now live in a little sleepy village!

sonjadog · 19/03/2024 18:26

Depends on how close it is, how busy it is, what kind of traffic. Opening right out onto the road would be too close. At the end of a garden away from the road, possibly.

mirror245 · 19/03/2024 18:31

No it wouldn't put me off but if there were options I'd chose something else. You do get used to the noise though.

Igmum · 19/03/2024 18:34

Yes (another cat owner here)

Pjmasksonrepeat · 19/03/2024 18:40

What's the speed limit? Is it single or dual carriageway? How far back are you?

I grew up on a busy road but it was a 30 and single carriageway. We also were about 4 car lengths back from the pavement. I liked the traffic noise and it took me ages to adjust to a quiet road!

Fellatfirsthurdle · 19/03/2024 18:43

Yes. My house is 3 roads back from a main road and I can hear some traffic noise from it, I would not want to be any closer. Around here house prices reflect that this is the general consensus, as houses on/next to main roads are cheaper than those that are not.

Heartytrousers · 19/03/2024 18:45

Yes, that's why you've seen a property that seems a lot of house for the money (?), most people wouldn't choose it, but for the right price some will compromise.

Apart from the noise and fumes, just getting on and off the drive can be tricky.

feelingalittlehorse · 19/03/2024 19:11

Would depend on…

How busy is busy? Have you visited during rush hour/ school run?
What’s the speed limit?
Is the property gated or just open to the road? Is there a front garden and drive, or does the house just sit on the road with the parking behind?

The answers to those would influence ny decision.

MrsDilligaf · 19/03/2024 19:13

It would put me off - I like quiet and having lived on a main road before I don't envisage moving back to a noisy location again.

TheGoddessFreyja · 19/03/2024 19:16

We barely notice the busy road we are on in the apartment we rent but do notice the dust that comes into our bedroom that clings on the walls mostly in summer as we have the windows wide open.

Whiskers4 · 19/03/2024 19:16

Yes, I have two cats. Also, DH spends a lot of 'me' time out in the garden inthe summer just watching the world go by and that wouldn't include noise and pollution.

ButterBastardBeans · 19/03/2024 19:17

No. It took me ages to get used to living by this busy road but I quite like it now. There's always something of interest.

DamasceneRose · 19/03/2024 19:19

We live on a very busy road and have house cats as we just don’t want to take the risk. I would love to live somewhere quieter but we couldn’t afford any other house in this area and the location is good (aside from the busy road) as we can easily walk into the city centre.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 19/03/2024 19:20

Yes. I grew up in a house on a busy 40mph road and it’s always there swishing away, lorries, sirens etc. And if you have kids or pets you’re always watching out.

cleo333 · 19/03/2024 19:20

I bought a house once in a busyish road thinking I can live with it but it drive me mad . I tuned into the cars revving and moving off . In the end it felt like I had no peace at all . It was a relief to move

Theresit · 19/03/2024 19:23

Yes.
We’ve done it- never again. It actually made us far more sensitive to noise. When we moved to our new , very quietly located house we were still listening out for traffic noise at the start.

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 19/03/2024 19:24

Yes because I remember a post on here a few years ago and people who lived on a busy road were saying never again.

Chunkycookie · 19/03/2024 19:25

No. Mine is on a busy road. Good double glazing, don’t notice it.

can’t hear it in the back garden either.

Danielle9891 · 19/03/2024 19:25

Yes. When we were viewing houses there were a few that were a lot nicer than the one we bought but I just couldn't live near a road. I'd be nervous of the dog or my toddler getting out. Also I like sitting in the garden in the summer without the noise of traffic. And I couldn't be bothered with the struggle getting parked or leaving the driveway.
