Would a busy road put you off a house?

Even if it has

  • Good windows
  • Parking for 2 cars
  • 10 minute walk to the centre of town
  • Sought after location

Yes, it would.

ThomasineMay · 19/03/2024 19:25

Personally I'd not buy a house on a main road due to noise and pollution. Plenty of people would be happy to though I'm sure

DSD9472 · 19/03/2024 19:26

More info needed OP!
I lived 20yrs between zone 1/2 in London right on a busy road. We'd get a layer of black 'soot' on the windows which faced the road. We TTC 12yrs and lost 3 with no cause for fertility issues found. I can't say the pollution was a direct cause- but the air quality certainly didn't help!
We eventually moved to a cul-de-sac in a quiet village and have a dog. The peace, quiet and lack of pollution is amazing, and I'd never move back to a busy road!

Daffyduck01 · 19/03/2024 19:28

The road I live on is busy out the front (30mph main road through a village) but there’s nothing but fields behind us. You only really notice noise when the house is otherwise silent.

farfallarocks · 19/03/2024 19:30

Yes I wouldn’t even look at it.

mummaoftwogirls · 19/03/2024 19:35

5 years ago I would have said no, I grew up living on a busy main road which was on the busy local bus route and it never really bothered me, I suppose I didn't know any different, but we moved to a quiet cul de sac and my god the difference. It's so peaceful I can have the windows open all day long and hear nothing but the birds, the amount of dust and dirt inside the house is minimal compared to living on a busy road, I also had asthma for years and haven't needed to use an inhaler for 4 years now. I would never move to a house on a main road again.

Yes because I have a cat

This. We didn't consider busy roads due to cats. If I didn't have any then as long as it was easy to park and leave I would consider it

How busy? Front door opening out onto a busy dual carriageway, yes. If it was a single lane road in a medium sized town, don’t think I’d be bothered

This is my situation. I love the sound of all that life outside. I find traffic noise soothing.

MWNA · 19/03/2024 19:42

Not the dual carriage way!🙃

thecatsthecats · 19/03/2024 19:56

It didn't put us off.

It's a busy road near the lights, so traffic isn't fast but is constant during the day. A primary school behind us too.

We preferred it to the hush-hush of the quiet side roads which are a bit too quiet. And I feel that the footfall makes it safer - my husband has left his keys in the front door twice overnight and nothing's happened.

Oh, and the cats are fine too.

NotFastButFurious · 19/03/2024 20:10

Yes
ive only ever lived in cul-de-sacs and absolutely can not cope with traffic noise.

sleekcat · 19/03/2024 20:13

It depends what you mean by busy. And how far back from the road it was, perhaps.

I wouldn't buy a house on a busy road because of my cats, but otherwise I might. One of the most expensive and desirable roads in my area is very busy, and even though it has huge, beautiful period houses I still would not move there because of the cats!

abracadabra1980 · 19/03/2024 20:36

Yes as have cats and dogs, and always will have.

GrumpySock · 19/03/2024 20:38

Yes. You'll have to open windows one day

Ketzele · 19/03/2024 20:44

No, despite having kids, cats, asthma, no garden etc. I have lived on busy London roads all my life and don't even notice the noise. Spent 15 years overlooking two busy junctions and 12 lanes of traffic.

elliejjtiny · 19/03/2024 20:45

Yes. We live on a major a road. I don't mind the noise of the traffic but crossing the road is an absolute nightmare. There is only a tiny bit of pavement on our side of the road as well so you can't go anywhere without crossing the road. Crossing the road takes 10-20 minutes each time so going anywhere takes forever.

Laiste · 19/03/2024 20:57

Yes.
Wouldn't even consider it.

Luckycloverz · 19/03/2024 20:58

Yes, in regards to noise still very likely in back garden or with windows open.
Cats safety, children's safety. Turning out of my driveway hassle.
My tesco delivery and feeling rushed having them blocking traffic flow 🤣 All issues with last house.

I live In a quiet lane now and not sure I'd ever want to change back.

I should add, our road is definitely one of the more desirable ones in the neighborhood as you pretty much have to choose between parking or traffic.

Our house was 25-50k more than slightly bigger houses on quieter streets.

omega4ever · 19/03/2024 22:16

Yes. I like to live off the main drag for many reasons mentioned above.

Letsrunabath · 19/03/2024 22:18

Even though I live in the complete opposite, I would consider it as I get older as I would like the business of it all.

dreadisabaddog · 19/03/2024 22:28

No. I grew up on a busy road and still find road noise soothes me to sleep

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 19/03/2024 22:33

Not if I live in a city, if out of city centre then yes

Dolly567 · 19/03/2024 22:35

I live on a busy road but it's wide, has buses the lot but there's also a speed limit due to the school
It's fine for me, I also like to people watch when I'm sat on the sofa sometimes Blush

When I go to my parents, the silence shocks me and I wouldn't even say my road is loud but you get used to it

justasking111 · 19/03/2024 22:37

Yes.

We rented one between selling and buying. Couldn't open the windows in the bedrooms hot summer nights because of the noise of cars from 5am. It was awful.
