Sainsbury’s online orders cancelled due to technical issues, no warning, anyone else?

First world problems I know… but did anyone have issues with their Sainsbury’s online order not being delivered yesterday?

Mine was expected in morning, DM’s who lives 10 mins away also expected in morning. Didn’t turn up and DM’s friend who’s visiting her today rang and told her she’d been on the phone for an hour to sainsburys and they had technical difficulties and were cancelling orders but no one had told us!

Re-deliveries rescheduled for today but we weren’t happy especially as no one told us.

So do this happen to anyone else? At the end of the day not the end of the world and we both went to Waitrose as we were meeting for clothes shopping anyway.

Not in the morning it wasn’t!

I sent it to my husband at 10:24am as I was at work

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain what time were yours and your Mums deliveries meant to be?
I got a notification just before 9am via Sky News.

I beg to differ. It was the leading story in the BBC news. Knocked Ukraine and Palestine off the lead story.

If a company the size of Sainsbury has orders to get out but due to an IT issue they simply can't, do you mind me asking how you expect them to contact you about your order? Were you expecting a text message? A phone call? Can you imagine how many people they would have to contact and also what about data privacy? Would they be allowed to contact individual customers about this? It was easier for them to go public with the issue and have it on the news. They couldn't help if you didn't turn on a radio or your tv to catch up with the news in your area.

To be fair we’d gone out by then and I didn’t think to check as by the time I picked up DM she was irritated.

Yes I heard about yesterday. My mum had a delivery booked for the morning, she also saw it online that there was a problem, so rang Sainsbury's to see if she was getting her order. Was cut off after 30 mins 😁but actually, her order (well most of it) did arrive. The driver said they had the most basic of details, ie just an address.

Both 10am and we didn’t see anything on SM and no notification.

It wasn’t yesterday and should’ve been.

It most certainly was. I was heading out at 8am and it was the first item on the news on the radio

MintTwirl · 17/03/2024 10:14

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 17/03/2024 10:09

It wasn’t on SM in the morning, we checked.

It was though. Also a big notice on the Sainsburys website which would be the most logical place to look.

LucyLaundry · 17/03/2024 10:14

Literally everyone else saw it! Stop being a silly sausage and pretending that it wasn't!

Next you'll be telling us you didn't know the M25 was closed. 🤣

It wasn’t on SM in the morning, we checked.

As someone who works in IT (not for Sainsbury or Tesco), I would imagine that for the first 90 mins to 2 hrs of the issue, they were doing their damnedest to try to resolve the issue and get the backlog of orders out to their customers. When that didn't work or resolve the issue, it would be around then that they would escalate the issue internally and get their PR people on the job because they could see that it would take much longer to resolve.
So, if your order was planned for delivery at say 9am, it's very possible they had been working on the issue and were still trying to resolve it at that point. They weren't going to go public if they could get it resolved before the huge volumes of shoppers descended on their stores and they would need the green light from the PR people (who probably had to liaise with lots of different internal teams in the company first) before they did their press release.

Give the company a bit of slack here. They notified as many people by the press/media as soon as they could.

Can I recommend that you get a radio and pop it on in your kitchen when you get up in the morning? It's great for listening to local news and things like this. I love my radio.

Itscatsallthewaydown · 17/03/2024 10:19

try listening or watching the news occasionally

Caravaggiouch · 17/03/2024 10:22

It definitely was all over the news yesterday morning. I wasn’t remotely looking for it and knew about it.

They’re back up and running today, my 8:30am delivery came as normal.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 17/03/2024 10:25

Ok, to be fair… I didn’t look. But DM did and said nothing she saw… so I was going on what she said.

DM uses Facebook etc and I do too. But honestly, first thing I didn’t see anything which leapt out at me. And first thing DM heard was when her friend rang her at about 10am.

Another one who doesn't get Sainsbury's deliveries but definitely knew about it yesterday morning. It was everywhere.
If I had a delivery booked it wouldn't have taken me more than a few minutes to find out what was going on.

MILLYmo0se · 17/03/2024 10:29

Whataweirdsituation · 17/03/2024 10:01

@MILLYmo0se they did! It was everywhere yesterday. Because it was such a HUGE number of people they didn’t have capacity to reach out to everyone, though they were trying.

Well that's what I figured, I'm in Ireland and even I knew there was a big problem re shopping with Sainsbury's yesterday, when the OP didn't know I figured it must have been something I randomly saw here

lalaandpo · 17/03/2024 10:29

I was due a delivery yesterday aswell but spotted online about the issue and then the app also said about it.
An email was sent out last night apologising and they've very kindly applied a voucher to my account, which was very unexpected!

So why are you arguing with posters that it wasn’t online when you never actually checked yourself…

So I’ve changed my mind. I wasn’t checking SM myself yesterday so I didn’t know! Now I do know.

I’m not blaming DM she said she’d checked but I think was expecting a text or email rather than her go on SM.

YouveGotAFastCar · 17/03/2024 10:53

The system was down. They had no way of sending texts or emails. They had no way of accessing people’s orders or details.

It was all over social media; and the news; and they couldn’t have done much more. We knew at 7:30am and weren’t expecting an order yesterday.

I’m glad you both got sorted with little hassle but YABU to suggest it wasn’t widespread news.

LookItsMeAgain · 17/03/2024 11:01

Next time, ask your mother to turn on the television or radio to see if it is just her order that they have forgotten about or whether it might, just might, be a more widespread issue affecting millions of orders.

Why were you disputing this with so many of us who were able to tell you that it was on social media and in the news? Did you not believe us???
