Avocados

Are you a fan?

We’re divided in our household - 3 of us love them, the other 2 run away in horror!😁

What food/s divide your household?

Love avocados, DH doesn't.

The thing that divides our house though is coriander. DH and DD2 love coriander, DD1 and I hate it. I'm not fussy at all and will eat/try anything. I will actually eat coriander but it feels like someone has poured perfume on my dish and it's ruined.

I'm sure that I've read somewhere that hatred of coriander is genetic and you can't train yourself to like it like you can with most things. Is that bollocks? Have I made that up? 😂

Love. Just bought a bag of 6 😍

Hated it as a child, couldn't understand why my parents loved that green, tasteless slimy stuff.

Now I have it on rye toast with vegemite (Australian, never tried Marmite but I bet it'd work). To fancy it up, add thinly sliced onion and diced bacon. Food of the Heavens.

Then there's guacamole. Phwoaarr.

I really hope this turns into an avo recipe thread.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 12/03/2024 09:56

Love them, they are also brilliant to making blends for my preschool who is tube fed as they pack a lot of goodness/calories into a small volume of feed.

Cookerhood · 12/03/2024 09:57

I love avocados & so does DD but the rest of the family think they taste of nothing & are slimy! Mind you, there's nothing like a disappointing avocado, or a wasted one that you open too soon :(.
DS says coriander tastes of soap. I love it!

Dustyblue · 12/03/2024 09:58

Oops- what food divides the household? Lentils and all beans. Is only me who likes them.

IntermittentFarting · 12/03/2024 10:32

I love avocado and put it on toast, in sandwiches, salad and even on pizza! Have it sliced or mashed and love it with a raspberry vinegrette.

DH and DS are "meh" but my DDs like avocado too.

mindutopia · 12/03/2024 10:45

I love them. I don't think there are any haters, maybe my 6 year old isn't a fan, but no one else is fussed other than me. Unfortunately, I love them so much that I buy them frequently but never eat them before they go black. 😂

The rest of the house is highly suspicious of kimchi and everyone groans when I bring some home. I mean proper kimchi, not the pickled sort from Tesco. Which is fine because they don't touch it and I get to eat it all in peace.

ouch321 · 12/03/2024 10:47

Tried it once, thought it very blah.
I know it's very trendy though.
I'll stick with unfashionable apples.

GigiAnnna · 12/03/2024 10:54

Love them. I'm the only one. My kids and husband won't touch them. Other foods that split the household are gherkins, medjool dates and sushi.

HoppingPavlova · 12/03/2024 10:57

I live on avo.

However, I’m the only person’s n in the house that will eat green beans. When I go to restaurants, if beans are a side dish I get it and eat it all, leaving my main dish if necessary.

@BusySittingDown that is correct re coriander, tastes like soap to some people.

I love a perfectly ripe avocado but hate the fuckers for only being perfect for about ten minutes.

WAGGINGTONGUE · 12/03/2024 11:08

never tried an avocado

what do they taste like?

are they very cellulosey?

I have IBS and a lot of things set me off

SpikyCoconut · 12/03/2024 11:13

I don't know if I am a freak of nature of some sort but coriander used to taste like soap to me, and now doesn't.
I keep seeing things saying that that is impossible, but admittedly haven't ever looked into it.

Love avocados.

AdaColeman · 12/03/2024 11:18

I like avocado, especially with smoked salmon and Caesar dressing, or in a bacon sandwich.

I can't eat coriander, as it makes the dish taste of soap, I think that's because of a particular gene. Coriander, (and chorizo!) seems to be in everything at the moment!

AffIt · 12/03/2024 11:28

I have heard of the coriander gene, but I'm not entirely sure of it... my mother definitely thinks it tastes of soap, but my sibling and I (and my niece and nephew) love it!

Perhaps it's dormant / recessive (disclaimer: not a geneticist, may not be using these terms correctly).

DcatAnnie · 12/03/2024 11:30

The best way to store avocados is to put them whole in water in the fridge as soon as they turn ripe and they last ages that way.

SeaToSki · 12/03/2024 11:31

Tomatoes divide our house but only in the raw state.

Am I the only one curious about what this poster said about avocados to warrant a deletion Grin

Well, I love avocado and had it as a topping on a veggie burger recently. Lush. Have also been known to bake them with tomato and cheese topping.

GoodHeavens99 · 12/03/2024 11:43

I am, too @HumerousHumous!

Fellow ibs sufferer and I would say they pretty much keep me going.

I can tolerate salt and pepper so it gets added to a lot of meals.

But, I am currently eating a wrap, and it is just not right as it is missing avo. I have 5 in the cupboard. Not a one is ripe enough yet. Knowing avos though, by tomorrow all will be ripe and then I have to scoff them all in the avo window time (which seems like minutes).

They are creamy and buttery I would say. But there a lot of different versions and slightly different tastes to them.

It is recessive & thought to be the OR6A2 gene on chromosome 11!

It was an idiot pretending to be Kate Middleton. They were spamming the boards talking bollocks.

Nothing particularly offensive but just annoying and childish.

GoodHeavens99 · 12/03/2024 13:09

May I please brighten up everyone's day with this video that I only discovered today.

It's about avocados, so it's germane!
