If you could live anywhere in the UK where would you go?

Currently considering a relocation from London and quite a free bird on location. Would love to know where everyone would love to move to!

Flamborough 🩷

anunlikelyseahorse · 11/03/2024 16:18

Somewhere wild and rugged, coast, moorland or mountains. and as far from the madding crowd as I could get, however since such rural idles are way over my budget i'm stuck where I am!

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 11/03/2024 16:40

Dorset or Cornwall

I like the UK, but it has been ruined by overpopulation. There are just too many people jammed onto this little island. I live in Colchester, which is a market town with the population of a small city. Developers have squeezed as many disgusting little new builds as they can onto every bit of available land. The traffic is now hellish. In fact, I'm not exaggerating when I say I hardly bother going out. I don't go to yoga anymore, for example, because I can't face the drive after work. I spent Christmas in Norwich and encountered the same thing. We walked into the town, but the traffic was just horrendous. I sometimes think the south east will end up as one giant housing estate.

If I could move anywhere, it would be the far north east of England, on the English-Scottish border.

Edited

I agree - l am not far from Colchester and it is a giant housing estate from Tollgate to Highwoods and then some.

West Dorset, Devon or Cornwall in a coastal location.

ScouseOfCards · 11/03/2024 16:48

I'd want a house in the Isle of Wight for the spring and summer and a flat in London in the autumn and winter. Best of both worlds.

The Cairngorms. Ballater Braemar etc.

MiddleagedBeachbum · 11/03/2024 16:59

I moved from Oxfordshire to the NW Lakes a few years back and it’s been the best decision ever!!

Im now mortgage free and own a stunning Victorian terrace, 4 floors, 5 beds (does need some renovation) for £150k that over looks the sea with the sun setting over it every day.
The beach is 2 mins walk away.
Closest Lake is 15 mins, mountains and fells the same.
Lovely towns, marinas and beaches.

Train station to Carlisle which then takes you to loads of places.

Cumbrian people are super friendly.

its a slower way of life here, more community focused, like the rest of England was 20 years ago.

it’s paradise here x

iwafs · 11/03/2024 16:59

Wales

Gloriousgardener11 · 11/03/2024 17:02

I’d move to the Isle of Wight - no motorways or bloody ring roads!

Looking across to the mainland and sticking the Vs up to it 😬🤭

spamandeggs · 11/03/2024 17:06

Devon or Cornwall

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 11/03/2024 17:06

The Gower, Highgate or Edinburgh. For very different reasons!

ShanghaiDiva · 11/03/2024 17:07

Bath

Coconuthotchocolate · 11/03/2024 17:09

Jersey or shropshire

Bakewell. I just love it! Anywhere round there.

It's lovely but does get rammed in the summer

Honeysuckle16 · 11/03/2024 17:14

Where I live now in beautiful Edinburgh. Just walking around the city lifts the heart.

That does sound lovely. Cumbria is gorgeous.

justasking111 · 11/03/2024 17:15

The weather is dryer in the south east I do envy you that living in Wales. The west is generally wetter.

Depressing isn't it! I live in a village on the outskirts of Colchester, but it's slowly being destroyed. My local woods have been hacked down to make way for a new estate, and at the other end of the village a second giant estate has been grafted onto the village. Well, I say estate, but it's more like a mini town. And now another load of houses are being built two miles away. It just never ends. No matter how many of these disgusting rabbit hutches they jam on top of one another, we always need more, more, more.

My quality of life has deteriorated SO much. We're coming into the Spring now, but I won't bother visiting any beauty spots on the first nice day. What's the point? I'll just sit in traffic and then won't get parked. And even if I do, there will be people everywhere. And instead of birdsong, all you hear in the distance is the screeching of car engines, or the horrible banging/backfiring sound of modified exhausts. There are too many people. It's as simple as that.

Pimlico. This would do nicely.

£11.5 million and no parking. No grass.
Right in the centre of London.
Not for me! Not even if you paid me.

Lovemusic82 · 11/03/2024 17:23

I like where I live and probably wouldn’t want to live anywhere else (in the uk) but there are lots of lovely places that I feel would be ok to live, Cotswolds, Shropshire, Devon/Dartmoor or Pembrokeshire. Wouldn’t want to live in a city but I do like visiting them.

Gettingonmygoat · 11/03/2024 17:31

SW coast of Scotland, Pure bliss. Everything you could ever need is within 60 minutes, city, countryside and coast, what else do you need?

I would definitely live on the South coast for the weather and ease of access to the continent.

Completely overrated. It's SO overcrowded absolutely everywhere, from Kent all the way down to Bournemouth. Many previously lovely seaside towns feel urban, seedy and dirty now. Brighton is a perfect example. It's awful.

All across the south east and down to Southampton and Portsmouth the motorways are constantly full of massive trucks. the roads are in a truly awful state. The litter along the roadsides of appalling. Driving is stressful. Unless you need to go back and forth to France on at least a monthly basis, living close to the ports is just not worth the other associated hassles. And it's bloody expensive.

Seconded. We're still here, despite all the development and increased traffic, and the awful prospect of Welborne, for the following reasons (which only just outweigh a decision to move - for now):

The marina on the Hamble where we keep our boat is within walking distance of home.
Easy access to the Isle of Wight.
Portsmouth ferry port is 15 minutes down the motorway on a good day.
Heathrow is about an hour away - again, on a good day.

If and when we move, it'll be to Cornwall for family reasons.

Charlingspont · 11/03/2024 17:41

North Yorkshire coast. Filey maybe.
