If you could live anywhere in the UK where would you go?

Currently considering a relocation from London and quite a free bird on location. Would love to know where everyone would love to move to!

Hmmm..I'm a bit torn. Either Troutbeck in the Lake District. Norham village area in Nothumberland. Or any of the gorgeous little hamlets in the North Yorks Moors.
If I won the Euromillions, I'd love to have homes in all 3.

Previous sloppy comments about civilisation weren’t actually about proximity to London but about population centres with things like hospitals with major teaching bases, theatres which get touring productions etc. As someone who has lived in remote bits of England (yup, even in the north) but also watched people retire to remote bits the beauty of those places subsides a lot when you’re an hour to an A&E, or can only use very erratic public transport to get anywhere, and taking someone for a two hour journey home after being an inpatient for chemo is a pretty grim journey I don’t want to repeat.

Bit of a problem if you get old there and need access to a hospital!

Yes this is the downside and even before I get old as I've had breast cancer which required a year of hospital appointments. But I can dream in which I will never need another hospital and can just canoe round all day. 😎And visit the gardens on Tresco with the red squirrels.

My in-laws live on the Isle of Wight, and we regularly holiday in Brighton together. I think the sunny south coast is the way to go. We've started referring to the Isle of Wight as the British Riviera with its amazing micro-climate!

London. Sorry 😂 I like the hustle and bustle of a big city, going out for drinks and to museums and theatres, socialising. I lived by the sea for a while and found it so boring.

Because nowhere else in the U.K. has bars, restaurants and theatre? Nobody socialises?

You said the south east to be near civilisation. The rest of the country’s towns and cities are fine for hospitals too.
I say this as someone who moved form a very rural area to near Cardiff while still fit and healthy (mid 50s) precisely because I’d seen what growing old away from an urban centre with a hospital was like.

I like the UK, but it has been ruined by overpopulation. There are just too many people jammed onto this little island. I live in Colchester, which is a market town with the population of a small city. Developers have squeezed as many disgusting little new builds as they can onto every bit of available land. The traffic is now hellish. In fact, I'm not exaggerating when I say I hardly bother going out. I don't go to yoga anymore, for example, because I can't face the drive after work. I spent Christmas in Norwich and encountered the same thing. We walked into the town, but the traffic was just horrendous. I sometimes think the south east will end up as one giant housing estate.

If I could move anywhere, it would be the far north east of England, on the English-Scottish border.

A nice, decent-sized village or small town somewhere in Northamptonshire. Some of them are surprisingly delightful and olde-worlde. And unexpectedly cheap.

Moier · 11/03/2024 14:58

Whitby..or York but l visit once a month anyhow.

Fuschia01 · 11/03/2024 14:59

For me, London.

Chipsahoy · 11/03/2024 15:10

North Scotland. Which is why we moved here!

LadyEloise1 · 11/03/2024 15:20

Is Jersey included in the UK ?
If so, Jersey.

I’d go to the coast around Newcastle - Whitley Bay / Tynemouth area. Beside the sea, easy access
to Northumberland, metro in the city centre for work and trains and access to the airport.

That's exactly my plan for when I retire next month. Although having said that the parts of Northumberland I am familiar with are not as close to Newcastle as you might think. But then I don't have a car.

Last summer I had one lovely day when I walked from Bamburgh along the coast all the way to Longhoughton where I was staying. There is a bus to Newcastle but it takes a while.

Patrickiscrazy · 11/03/2024 15:21

Probably Shropshire.
But, as I am an immigrant, (paying taxes etc.) for 20 years, I would really love to separate from my husband and go live back in Prague.🙂😁

What's that village in Northamptonshire where all the cottages are made of pastry?

ineedtogoshoppingnow · 11/03/2024 15:30

I used to walk this street every day to get to school and love it! So if I had lots of money I'd buy one of these houses that are around the edge of Greenwich Park.

We often have this conversation and I can never make up my mind, mainly because I /we swing from wanting the countryside, to wanting to live in a city.

We currently live in Hampshire, only one left at home and he's 15 so hopefully will be moved on in the next 10 years, then we are free!

Currently looking likely that we'll aim towards South London/Surrey/Berkshire

LipstickLil · 11/03/2024 15:37

Wiltshire or Somerset

Catlord · 11/03/2024 15:41

SW London or the south coast all the way. Brighton or Weymouth for preference

ilovesooty · 11/03/2024 15:42

Fuschia01 · 11/03/2024 14:59

For me, London.

Same here.

Clearinguptheclutter · 11/03/2024 15:43

Wales or Northumberland. But neither would work for employment purposes. We live on the outskirts of Manchester and a move out to Cheshire is more realistic.

BeaRF75 · 11/03/2024 15:45

London, but only a really central and smart bit, like Kensington or Chelsea. Sadly, budget does not allow.....

elQuintoConyo · 11/03/2024 15:46

Scotland Inverness-Nairn area, or Somerset coast, around Porlock.

mondaytosunday · 11/03/2024 15:53

Chelsea. I live in zone 3 but I'd love to live there in a small terrace with a little garden. Now just where did I put that spare £3m?

NorthCliffs · 11/03/2024 16:00

kerstina · 11/03/2024 12:39

Probably Cornwall or the Welsh coast. I love Anglesey in particular but think the weather would be better down South.

Cornwall here. It's been raining since last July ...
