What’s the best thing you’ve eaten that wasn’t a real meal?

Mine is a can of Coke and an American Milky Way Bar(Like a Mars Bars) and a mini can of plain Pringles when we were on holiday in the Dominican Republic and the malaria tablets made us extremely ill. We couldn’t keep anything down but that worked and it tasted incredible after days of barely eating.

Another would be vending machine oxtail soup after swimming.

What’s yours?

Oh and is there anything better than when you make a cup of tea and it’s the perfect strength and temperature?

A helping of the most incredible Fatti Dajaj from the Syrian table at a school cultural food fair.

I had HG. After my C section, I fed DD for the first time then my Dad, who is a useless man by all accounts, walked in with a cooked chicken tucked under his arm. I ate it like a badger, just devoured the whoel thing in 10 mins and sucked the bones. Best thing I ever tatsed.

I spent a few years in my teens/ early twenties working abroad in Northern Europe including working in a Dutch flower bulb factory during winter. It was freeeezing (minus 5 minimum) with no heating in the warehouse, packing wet, muddy flower bulbs 🥶. HOWEVER, they served a free bowl of hot soup with bread and butter at lunch break to all the workers. They were all decent but on a Tuesday they had an amazing thick pea and ham soup and on Fridays it was a gorgeous French onion soup and they honestly made the day bearable.

Must have made an impression cos I still remember all these years later! Never found a pea and ham or French onion soup to match up to those!

Thanks all.

I probably shouldn’t have started this thread when I’m hungry.

How is a pizza not a meal?

PTSDBarbiegirl · 10/03/2024 19:24

A sample of Lamb saag at the Mela festival, cooked by chefs from local Indian restaurants it was just incredible. Another was garlic langoustine and crab claw on the bar freshly caught and cooked on the west coast of Scotland. Cannae beat a Mortons well fired roll, buttered with salt N vinegar crisps in.

This made me laugh out loud. Did you request the chicken or does your dad regularly walk around with cooked chickens?

A flapjack after giving birth 😁

A giant portion of McDonald’s Fries in Egypt

Was mine and DHs first holiday together having been dating for 6 months at the time, went all inclusive and both came down with horrific food poisoning

After vacating our bowels for nearly 48 hours straight and not being able to keep any food down we spoke to reception who sent ‘someone to help’

That someone was a McDonald’s delivery driver with 2 large portions of fries. They were huge, salty and hot. The best thing I’ve ever had in my mouth.

On a side note this was way before Uber eats and I was surprised to see dedicated McDonald’s delivery scooters!

Oh wow, @User19792 - that sounds amazing!

Did the sickness go away immediately your baby was born?

After having dd in hospital it was the middle of the night and I found a brownie that dh had brought in earlier in the evening.
I actually cried it was so wonderful.

upinaballoon · 10/03/2024 19:42

Not necessarily the best, but memorable - an oblong slice of a huge pizza, bought on the street in Rome. The topping was potato and rosemary and oil - delicious :) If I tried to make it at home it would most likely taste of nothing.
