What’s the best thing you’ve eaten that wasn’t a real meal?

Mine is a can of Coke and an American Milky Way Bar(Like a Mars Bars) and a mini can of plain Pringles when we were on holiday in the Dominican Republic and the malaria tablets made us extremely ill. We couldn’t keep anything down but that worked and it tasted incredible after days of barely eating.

Another would be vending machine oxtail soup after swimming.

What’s yours?

A large, perfectly ripe white peach bought from a market stall in a small town in south-west France. It was so unbelievably delicious. 😋

Minfilia · 11/03/2024 20:57

Toast after being in labour all night and giving birth at 6am.

A cheese sandwich after starving for 24 hours and having an operation.

Apparently I enjoy hospital food Grin

HighlandCowbag · 11/03/2024 20:59

When ds was tiny on a Saturday morning dh used to bring me a coffee up first thing then shoot off and do the supermarket shopping. Ds was bfing and a velcro baby who thought sleep was for wimps and I had c section so used to snooze most of the morning on a weekend when I didn't have the school run to do.

Anyway dh used to bring me the fresh baked pastries home from morrisons. They were fucking amazing when I was starving and tired and craving sugar etc. Poor ds was regularly covered is cinnamon swirl crumbs.

A fish from the chip shop on the way home from hospital after three weeks in and having had an ileostomy fitted (had only started eating soup three days before). It. Was. Fantastic.

Charteta · 11/03/2024 21:03

Fresh watermelon after getting back on the boat after scuba diving - tasted like absolute heaven

LimoncelloSpritz · 11/03/2024 21:03

Churros in Cadiz. Fish cake in a bap from Leeds market. Pistachio croissant in Sicily.

Vetoncall · 11/03/2024 21:18

One scoop of pistachio and one of Nutella gelato from a small gelateria in Naples. It was phenomenal, I had one (or two) every day we were there. I don't remember the name but it was really close to the da Michele pizzeria so I was living my food dream 😄

cocavino · 11/03/2024 21:35

Granita on a scorching hot day in Sicily.

Fresh tortillas (that I made) and mashed avocado in Guatemala

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 11/03/2024 21:37

A m & s strawberry milkshake after dd was born by csection and l had been nil by mouth for hours if not days!

SnobblyBobbly · 11/03/2024 21:45

I had some pre-root canal treatment on an infected tooth, I'm not a dentist-phobe, but it was fucking awful. I slept all that day and night afterwards and couldn't eat a thing the next day. Then DH came home from work with a fresh soft loaf of bread and some butternut squash soup and it was absolutely heavenly.

I've bought the same soup again since, but it's never tasted as good as it did that day.

Peach iced drink and focaccia in Italy when I had raging tonsillitis

Edwoodparkfootie · 11/03/2024 21:55

Chocolate and salted crisps.
saw it on Dragon’s Den. DH and I tried it immediately. I’ve been too scared to eat it again as I loved it sooo much and normally I’d only allow myself one or the other and am actively trying to avoid both at the moment!

AmyAimee · 11/03/2024 22:07

A jam sandwich and a bag of flaming hot monster munch in Abu Dhabi airport waiting for my connection to Heathrow from Sydney. I’d been violently, violently sick on the first leg of the flight, the illest I have ever been (started seconds after the flight took off) and I spent the majority of the flight crying and vomiting. It passed just before we landed and I got off the plane, had a bottle of water and ate the sandwich I’d made 18 hours earlier and ate the crisps I’d paid £6 for in one of those British sweet shops in Sydney. It was heaven and I was fine after that.

Tarquina · 11/03/2024 22:14

Eating a bag of piping hot greasy chips from the chip shop, inundated with salt and vinegar, eaten out of the bag while walking home in the freezing cold after going swimming in the swimming pool

TwylaSands · 11/03/2024 22:16

I enjoy a small ball of pickles and olives.

Tarquina · 11/03/2024 22:17

A whole tub of Häagen-Dazs salted caramel ice cream

TeaPleaseX · 11/03/2024 22:19

I had just given birth and they gave me some toast which was cold with butter and jam on. I ate it in seconds.
It was so so sweet and good. Sometimes I leave the toast to go cold before I put the jam on now. Was amazing. The HG was so bad though, I think even sprouts would of made my thread comment 😂.

Parma ham, a hunk of bread and an ice cold beer after 36 hours of train travel in a hill village outside Italy

Clam chowder in a small polystyrene cup from a roadside caff in New England

bellsbuss · 11/03/2024 22:33

A cold mini bottle of Lanson with sour cream Pringles and a sweaty babybel after giving birth. It was like fine dining

Mindovermatter247 · 11/03/2024 22:45

A wild boar burger that I tried once at a food festival, it was Devine…

I have a go to snack which hits the spot every time, we call them pepperoni tacos, you cook some pepperoni quickly and put finely grated cheese I. The middle, tastes amazing and surprisingly is quite filling.

Dogdilemma2000 · 11/03/2024 22:48

proper baklava. Oh my goodness.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 11/03/2024 23:30

When I bought my first flat and was totally broke (that'll be the 11.9% interest rate!), towards the end of the month dinner would be either pork pie and salad cream or I'd cook one of those part cooked baguettes and eat it with various dips - you know the round packet with four different dips.

Also there was a bakery by my flat
and one night - well very early morning - I was just off the night bus and bought a white bloomer still hot from the oven. I got home and ate slice after slice with butter and jam. It was heavenly.

I had HG. After my C section, I fed DD for the first time then my Dad, who is a useless man by all accounts, walked in with a cooked chicken tucked under his arm. I ate it like a badger, just devoured the whoel thing in 10 mins and sucked the bones. Best thing I ever tatsed.

@User19792 your story resonates with me so much. I also had HG and shortly after the arrival of my dd (22 tomorrow) my dad arrived with a giant milk tray Easter egg which I immediately got stuck into!

SlackAlice1 · 11/03/2024 23:49

A poor shrivelled little baked potato that seemed to be cowering at the side of the plate, with a tiny little Pat of butter and approximately 27 flakes of grated cheese.

This was in hospital after having my gallbladder out. I was STARVING. It tasted so good I was gibbering with gratitude and pleasure.

BluesandClues · 11/03/2024 23:53

A friend brought round a chicken stew after my oldest was born. She also brought round a freshly baked loaf and some fresh butter. I stood in the kitchen and inhaled half of that loaf smothered in butter, it was DIVINE!
