Wanted to go to the India club on Strand.

Found out it's permanently closed. Want to go somewhere similar.

strand continental is next to work. So pissed off they closed. If this is what you like I second tayaabs. But book. Disjoin nice but overrated imo. Veeraswamy always excellent.

Babur is still good according to my local mates, but it's a long way out of town.

Trishna in Marylebone is a suburb Indian restaurant

Blimey, how posh are you if you think Marylebone is a suburb? Grin

Yes, yes I know.

WhamFantastic · 10/03/2024 22:05

I'm inspired to try some of these, thanks for all the recommendations.

I've been to Tamarind and cinnamon club some years ago and both were amazing.

Used to live near Tayyabs and Lahore Kebab House and go regularly, agree great food.

Alvinne · 10/03/2024 22:12

Trishna or Gymkhana all day

Babur is still good according to my local mates, but it's a long way out of town.

15 minutes from London Bridge, 5 minute walk from Honor Oak station. I know that seems like a long way to people from North London, though.

[Never forgotten bemused colleagues when I told them we were moving to South London back in the 80s - 'But how will you get to work? There's no tube there, is there?']

BiBi in Mayfair is exquisite!

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/03/2024 07:40

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g or the Overground from Canada Water.

I went to Babur last month. Still as good! The blue crab dumplings were amazing and the mutton curry divine.

Sack of the upmarket, go to Tayyabs and get the dry meat 👩‍🍳💋

Yes... This is the correct answer.

TrentCrimmOfTheIndependent · 11/03/2024 07:46

Veeraswamy
Cinnamon Kitchen

nuschmoo · 11/03/2024 08:17

Cafe Spice Namaste is really lovely and Mr Todiwalla, the chef, may come and have a chat at your table Smile

WimpoleHat · 11/03/2024 08:22

I’ll be honest and say that I really don’t like Indian food - but I absolutely loved Veeraswamy when I was taken there. The atmosphere and service were so lovely and everyone raved about the food (which I’m sure was wasted on me, but even I managed to choose wisely and have a meal I enjoyed - all the ingredients were excellent quality). So I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

frumpyunderwear · 11/03/2024 08:37

Another reason I wanted to go a bit above Dishoom in posh Ness is that I wanted to try more fish dishes.

Deathraystare · 11/03/2024 14:40

Made me smile at the mention of Veeraswamy. I think it is the oldest or one of the oldest Indian restaurants in England. Never been but both my Grandma and great Grandma went. That will be the Grandma that hates "all that foreign muck"! I have no idea whether or not they liked it. I am guessing not, but it must have been the place to be at the time.

I don’t think it’s open any more ☹️ if you mean the one in Aldgate… or have they moved??

Londonscallingme · 11/03/2024 14:46

Another vote for Benares, Gymkhana and Chutney Mary’s. Gunpowder i wouldn’t call posh but the food is good and it’s expensive, if that counts for anything 😂

dishoom is nice but not posh.

edit to add cinnamon kitchen snd the cinnamon club.

BarrelOfOtters · 11/03/2024 14:54

Veeraswamy - my mum went there on her first date with my dad - must have been early 60s.

Dishoom is good, but too loud and queu-y .... their breakfasts are the best bit as tend to be less busy.

OMG Tayabs - absolutely not posh...but soooo good.

Teenytinycarlady · 11/03/2024 14:55

saltysquid · 10/03/2024 14:45

Benares, Cinnamon Club, Chutney Mary, Quilon, Trishna, Gymkana, Jamavar, Veeraswamy’s, Yaatra, Bombay Brasserie.
Dishoom is nice but not upmarket, it is meant to be based on a mumbai parsi cafe.

This is a great list from salty, adding Amaya, Kanishka, Brigadiers, Bombay Bustle.

frumpyunderwear · 11/03/2024 15:23

Has it been mentioned before?

An Indian restaurant with a Michelin star?

OP posts:
PatriciaHolm · 11/03/2024 15:29

I thought Kutir had but doesn't seem to, though the chefs have had.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/03/2024 17:44

I hated Cinnamon Kitchen and it definitely wasn’t upmarket. I thought the vegetarian main course I had was really poor - like a really awful takeaway.
