Wanted to go to the India club on Strand.

Found out it's permanently closed. Want to go somewhere similar.

Chowringhee. Some very unusual Bengali food. It is not super upmarket though, on a Dishoom level.

saltysquid · 10/03/2024 15:04

Others i have liked are Darjeeling express(amazing biryani), Fatt Pundit(can be a bit hit and miss and is fusion) and Kricket

YesThisIsMe · 10/03/2024 15:07

Kricket is very good indeed, and takes reservations, but it's Indian-influenced tapas rather than "a curry restaurant" so might not be what you're looking for.

Masala Zone in Covent Garden. Puppets hanging from the ceiling. Sounds odd buts it’s great x

ReetPetity · 10/03/2024 15:10

Another vote for Kricket. Literally everything in there is delicious. You can't go wrong.

Thanks for the recommendations. Have already been to Dishoom and loved it!
Find the number of curries they do a bit small.

Love Masala Zone in Covent Garden! Not posh but not 'after the pub' curry house either. Our kids love it too.

The India club was def not upmarket - kinda formal ish setting I suppose but cheap as chips and food not great to be honest, though I'm sad to see it go.

My favourite places to go for curry in London are all Punjabi Pakistani rather than Indian
https://www.tayyabs.co.uk/ (east London)

https://spicevillage.co.uk/ (tooting, they also have a branch in Southall)
Mirch masala (also tooting)

I would not call Masala Zone posh tbh!

went to Praavas last week and it was excellent: https://maps.app.goo.gl/aLyBAMjbeKti4kte7?g_st=ic

Mint Leaf in the City is quite nice IMHO

Apologies, have looked it up - not the chain one 🤦‍♀️

Second this for a splurge. Indian restaurants often tend to feature food from the north of India, or as pp pointed out, Bangladeshi. This is Malayali cuisine, which is incredible, and different.

crackfoxy · 10/03/2024 15:50

Benares it's the best!

averythinline · 10/03/2024 16:05

Tandoor chop house... Fantastic food not had a duff dish... Not posh but not high st either.....

MrsFezziwig · 10/03/2024 16:11

Veeraswamy has the upmarket ambience, even though my choice would always be a Dishoom bacon nan

xyz111 · 10/03/2024 16:15

Masala zone is nice, has a few locations

Not posh but it’s buzzing

Another vote for Gymkhana. Great atmosphere and decor and particularly good if anybody likes veggie food, but great for everyone . Not cheap though, although I assume that’s not a concern.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/03/2024 16:36

Gymkhana is nice and their lunch menu is decent value.

CurlewKate · 10/03/2024 16:37

Darjeeling Express. Delicious food and fantastic ethics.

Icedoatlattelove · 10/03/2024 16:38

Definitely gymkhana. Dishoom is nice but the lack of revervations can make it awkward.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/03/2024 17:20

Dishoom is okay if you’re happy to queue and then sit virtually in the laps of the people on the next table. It’s definitely not upmarket.
