Wanted to go to the India club on Strand.

Found out it's permanently closed. Want to go somewhere similar.

Benares it's the best!

We didn’t live it at all

Another vote for Kutir in Chelsea. Loved the tasting menu.

I agree with Kutir, excellent food and really reasonably priced for both Chelsea and having a Michelin star.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I did enjoy Dishoom, but yes I wanted something a bit more upmarket and posh. Will try these out with friends and family when I have the time

Brigadiers. Dishoom doesn’t fit the upmarket bill. I thought Veeraswamy was nice enough but a bit overrated.

Ifitaintgotnoswing · 10/03/2024 18:05

I’d have loved to have recommended the painted heron on Cheyne walk but it closed down. Will look up some of the other recommendations. Gymkhana was good though.

frumpyunderwear · 10/03/2024 18:05

Would you all say the dishes tasted significantly better than Dishoom? Or is it just the atmosphere?

Kutir looks really good, that’s going to be on my list to try next

JadeMauve · 10/03/2024 18:42

Kahani

Gymkhana

The best Indian food I've had in the U.K. has always been from "not posh" places, central London has decent Indian restaurants but they simply aren't great in my opinion, lovely surroundings does not mean the best food. I'd head out of the centre for something more authentic.

I prefer southern Indian cuisine that might explain it a bit.

@mitogoshi Where would you recommend for Southern Indian food?

StrawberryEater · 10/03/2024 19:41

Oh god, not Dishoom! Sorry, but I’m British Indian and find the love for Dishoom completely baffling (apart from their breakfasts which are great). And it’s not upmarket, it’s just overpriced!

Gunpowder is my favourite. Not traditional but absolutely stand out cooking.

If you want something more traditional in terms of the menu but upmarket, then Veeraswami, Cinnamon Club, Quillon or Trishna.

The Tamil Prince or The Tamil Crown. Both utterly amazing.

Loved Benares and their cocktail bar is amazing ..

One or other of these is on my list for our next trip to London.

A lot of central London restaurants have amazing Indian food, on par with India as they often get Indian chefs from the best restaurants in India.
Saravana Bhavan and MTR are amazing too, but it is not somewhere I would go for a special meal. I want a combination of good food and ambience.

Totally worth it @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie. Order extra roti.

Jessforless · 10/03/2024 20:03

Btw… Dishoom do take reservations. You can book for 6 plus three months in advance.

managed to do a table for 15 last week.

That would be my top choice too. The paneer is home made and absolutely divine. Enjoy!

frumpyunderwear · 10/03/2024 20:10

As for south Indian. I've had many a tasty dosa in my day.

Cinnamon club

frumpyunderwear · 10/03/2024 20:11

I personally prefer a curry and naan though.
