Money, money, money

"More Rwanda-related costs have been published on the government contracts website - without, of course, any mention of Rwanda

💷£6.4m for "provision of facilities for Use of Force training"
✈️£671,090 for "aircraft fuselages for Use of Force Training"
🍔£315,000 for catering"

Spent when public services are faltering.

If you want to be really depressed read Sam Freedman's thread on the state of SEND.

Councils take 18 months - 2 years to give EHCPs to kids who need constant one to one care. Hopelessly inadequate funding for those who do have plans. Zero special school places available for years into the future in large parts of the country.

And the government response has been to introduce a "safety valve" system to help councils manage costs in return for further reducing the number of plans they're giving out / related support.

Which I don't think can even be legal.

Good example of what I'm talking about.

Essex is the worst in England for completing children’s special educational needs assessments, a senior council officer confirmed.

1% of children in Essex county get an assessment for an educational health care plan within 20 weeks 👇

The state of Send is appalling. My DD has waited nearly 2 years for her EHCP and at the end of it all, has been given a totally unsuitable placement. The whole process has broken us. We’re now going to appeal which will take another year. I really thought Kent would be the worst

AdamRyan · 15/03/2024 21:06

Yes SEND is awful. I don't blame the teachers, who are doing their best, but my year 8 child has SEN and I can't see him passing exams etc. I am very concerned for his future but cannot get any help.

And I'm a middle class, reasonably affluent parent. Goodness knows how families with fewer resources deal with it.

I would much rather see investment in SEN than Rwanda Sad

Zonder · 15/03/2024 21:15

Sorry, send teacher here and I have to throw in that if an ehcp is taking 2 years something is going wrong. It should be done within 20 weeks of submission. Unless the school don't get all their evidence in and it gets turned down originally.

As you were...

Zonder · 15/03/2024 21:16

But I do agree that send is massively underfunded. And there's just not the resources available.

DuncinToffee · 15/03/2024 21:30

Telegraph is reporting that a group of right-wing Tory MPs want Penny Mordaunt to lead the party into the next election

A recent meeting took place of leading Tory Right MPs with backers of Mordaunt to make that clear

It's behind paywall, I don't know if the names of these right wing mp's are mentioned.

Of course they do. She's the princess Thatcher.

Don't discount her. She can be very charming and she isn't divisive on the major issues.

She does need a brush up on her campaign films though

It has been absolutely devastating - the whole experience. From the initial application which was declined, 7 months to tribunal, a crap needs assessment, 9 months for first draft, 4 months to do school consultation. I can’t even speak about how awful it has been.

Zonder · 15/03/2024 21:35

That's really horrible. I hope you've got to the end of it now.

Sorry to derail thread, but can I ask Zinder, whether your school are ever forced to take a student even when you can’t meet need in practice? How do councils phrase that with you?

Zonder · 15/03/2024 22:10

I don't work in a school. I'm a peripatetic advisory teacher. I have worked with schools who have said they can't meet need and we have had to support them in meeting the needs as there is just such a horrible shortage of places for children with send.

L1ttledrummergirl · 15/03/2024 23:28

Bbc said that comic relief has raised £32m tonight. Imagine what a difference the £15m given to the conservatives could do if it was redirected there.

Maybe we should "stand up and fight" for it.

Will £15m buy a seat in the Lords in Rishi’s honours list?

I've talked about this loads

‘Negative budgets’: cost of living crisis could lose the Tories dozens of seats | Household bills | The Guardian

The new research comes amid concerns that falling inflation has led to the cost of living crisis dropping down the political agenda, despite households being left with energy bills far higher than they were three years ago and a widening group of people struggling to make ends meet.
The issue of “negative budgets” – where a family’s outgoings are no longer covered by their income – has become a key concern of Citizens Advice, which has been carrying out detailed research on the phenomenon.
While the problem is affecting a wider group of people, the group says there are now more far-reaching political implications for both main parties should they fail to consider radical action.
‘People use candles because they’re scared of the bills’:
Its constituency-level research identified 85 seats won by the Tories in 2019 where the MP’s majority is smaller than the number of people with a negative budget.

I still chuckle when I remember Penny being called too "woke" by ERG because her book said something slightly controversial about Dad's Army 😂- they are really re-living the good old days! I think I remember they chose Rishi because markets were in freefall post Brexit and he was slightly less obviously batty for foreign markets. Sounds like if they are opting for a later election to get their money's worth they'll do their batshit crazy candidate as a wild card last ditch attempt to pull the racists back onboard.

Mordaunt looks as though she will be next leader. The ultra GCs will be fuming that it isn't Saint Kemi.

I have been accused of being insufficiently respectful of Badenoch when I ask about her actual record in government. Which is poor. Her PR people are extraordinary.
