Have people finally got wise about MLM schemes?

I just realised the SM I’m on aren’t full of Younique, Forever Living etc. There’s also not the threads on here about being hounded by friends who are constantly trying to flog stuff and sign them up. Have the documentaries and articles about it burst the bubble or is it just the people I know that are no longer part of any. I was thinking how lovely it is to not have catalogues posted through my door or to be collared by people inviting me to grim evenings etc.

A school friend who I had to mute is very heavily into Younique. She’s on a cruise round the Bahamas with them ATM. Still doing the 10 daily posts (hence the mute) and how amaaaaaazing their latest shite is, some sort of liquid collagen I think.

Another distant friend, who I posted about the other day, still does Temple Spa. I admit to having bought off her a couple of times as the only place I know that stocks them is Harrods and I can’t get there very often these days. I was disappointed how, after her DM passed away, she posted on SM to thank friends for supporting her….and said how much better her TS products had made her feel. As I said on the other thread, there is nothing they won’t exploit for a sale.

Ex-colleague was doing FM but has gone very quiet of late 🤔.

There were 3 women on my (small, less than 200 houses) estate all doing FM. How they imagined they’d all make enough money and not piss everyone off on the FB group I’ve no idea. They have also all been very quiet lately.

I think people just don’t mention it and hope everyone will forget they ever did it.

I still see people trying to flog Tropic - they seem to think it’s a different class of MLM; nope, same old shite.

Agree that the rest are almost gone - happy days

TakeOnFlea · 09/03/2024 13:56

Oh christ yes. I've got a coach too

Distantview · 09/03/2024 14:12

A 'coach' who has jacked in what seemed to be a decent job to relocate in a very rural location recently held an online session with a group I'm part of as we prepared for a high-profile speaking event. I don't know if the organiser paid her - the event was funded by public money, so she may have been. (None of us were paid).

She was very unimpressive - all of us were, or had been, in roles where we'd already done a fair bit of presenting of one kind or another.
I don't know if she was part of a coaching MLM or just this general fad for people to become coaches.

When the organiser later passed on her message that she was asking for testimonials, there was tumbleweed on our WhatsApp group.

Normally the group has been supportive and effusive, this was very different.

So, yes, the wind might be changing and people aren't being taken in by this kind of thing any more.

I have a friend who sells Tropic - there is one product I buy from her now and again but most of their stuff is overpriced.

Cleaningupthemess · 09/03/2024 14:12

Startybastard. Yes it’s the one TotalDramarama24 mentioned. I was trawling for stuff to watch and it made me wonder if the whole shebang is starting to collapse. From what PPs are saying it does sound there’s still a few still going but hopefully the Netflix documentaries and the one I’ve just spotted, are starting to make a difference.

I see more people doing their own ‘businesses' a lot. I use inverted commas because, although they are a business (it’s easier to set up a website nowadays) they don’t seem to be bringing in much money - still selling to friends and family. Very often items they’ve made (candles/ soaps/ skin care and the like).

Cleaningupthemess · 09/03/2024 14:23

TheLightOfEarlyMorning. That’s true. Lots of people selling soaps, jewellery, candles/wax melts, cakes etc .

My friend has just switched from bodyshop to one which screams mlm. I've not said anything. It's actually working for her. But it makes me cringe so hard inside.

Same with my friend. She's had to give up Body Shop and moved to Yonique which is now amazing.

ThewaytoAmarula · 09/03/2024 15:22

There's a woman on my local group who jumps on to any job requests with "I have flexible roles! DM me!" She's a UW bot.

EndlesslyDistracted · 09/03/2024 15:22

I have to admit I always did like Tropic products but no one I know still does it.

Gymmum82 · 09/03/2024 15:25

Still going strong here. Mine is full of FM perfumes and Tropic

Sparklybutold · 09/03/2024 15:27

I went to a nearby ‘glow up’ workshop at a local coffee shop. Cost £5. No advertising on the actual poster that it was tropic. I did however buy products and I have enjoyed using them. But they are very pricey, so I'll be trying to find a cheaper alternative.

I'm torn, because on doing a bit of digging, tropic doesn't seem to be as bad as the others? Does this somehow redeem itself? I so want to ask my consultant a few questions about this, but feel cheeky if I did ask questions.

Barleysugar86 · 09/03/2024 15:31

Met a new MLM last week in our local groups trying to flog chocolate (Kakawa) so I posted a link to the Elle Poounique anti MLM blog underneath and she blocked me.
To be honest I have no problem with that as its back to not seeing any MLM posts now for me.

florasl · 09/03/2024 15:42

Utilities Warehouse is very popular here, always preying on mums looking for flexible jobs!

Yes, this is the one I see a lot lately!

Cleaningupthemess · 09/03/2024 17:14

There were a few relentless Utility Warehouse posts on the fb neighbourhood sites I’m on but they’ve calmed down (for now at least).

Yes! Someone I know has just started raving on Facebook about how fantastic Utilities Warehouse is, how it's bringing a great income and she hardly has to work at all.

Luckily she lives 100 miles away from me.

What could possibly go wrong? They all have each other as customers, and leave the rest of us alone.😂

ilikeeggs · 09/03/2024 17:41

Some people I know who used to do mlms are now ‘life coaches’ and run female empowerment classes, that seems to be the new thing now.

ILoveMyCaravan · 09/03/2024 17:48

Is Tropic really as bad as the other MLMs? I do buy some of it from a friend but never thought she was in a chain as such, which is what I thought MLMs were.

hby9628 · 09/03/2024 17:51

Tropic & temple spa going strong round here. To be fair I do like some of the TS stuff but the sales bull is constant. One of my friends signed up to be a rep but I don't think she's done very well out of it unfortunately & she spent a fortune.

LutonBeds · 09/03/2024 17:57

It’s very odd as well to still have ‘consultants’. I’ve just had a quick google and you can buy Temple Spa and Tropic directly. What’s the point of ordering from my friend in another town, who then orders from her supplier, waits for it to be delivered to her and then delivers it to me?

laddersandsnakes12 · 09/03/2024 18:00

Everyone who I know that did any kind of MLM now has a proper job - you know, with a monthly salary, annual leave and not having to hassle all of your friends and family to buy shit or join up. A friend sold Arbonne, called herself a "Bonne babe" 🤢, posted so many cringe videos on social media, it was so embarrassing. Once when I was going through a bad mental health patch, she tried to convince me that a certain type of fizz stick was great for the mind and might really help me. Yeah, think I'll stick with the antidepressants and therapy, thanks! So thrilled that she's now working, for both her and my sanity!

Hecate01 · 09/03/2024 18:02

FM are all over my social media. I do wonder how they all make money because there's so many of them in my area.

PinkyBlueYou · 09/03/2024 18:06

Unfortunately I posted about this yesterday as a friend has got sucked in, and I'm worried as she's given up her much needed salaried job snd is convinced she's on the road to riches and easy money. Forever Living.
Sadly I think she's an ex friend for now as she's got stroppy about my words of caution. Apparently I should be happy for her and not jealous.
