BBC Sounds podcast suggestions

Givemethesworrrrd · 09/03/2024 07:18

I've recently starting listening to podcasts (I know, a bit late to the party) but I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions on what to listen to.
I have recently listened to:

The great post office trial
Witchhunt
Mythical creatures
The Shamima Begum story
A few of the Our Times episodes
Uncanny

It's a bit of a mish mash selection so open to any suggestions! 🙂

I liked Lady killers and real survival stories

PeacockHat · 09/03/2024 07:29

I only got into listening to podcasts last year, but I'm hooked now! If you liked Uncanny, you may enjoy The Battersea Poltergeist and The Witch Farm.

I really like true crime ones, my favourite was Death in Ice Valley. I also liked:

Bible John
The Body in the Tree
The Crossbow Killer
Vishal
A Very British Cult
Lady Killers (as recommended above)

Because of my podcast addiction, I also got an Audible subscription. Podcasts (and more recently, audiobooks) have made long, boring dog walks a pleasure!

Million Dollar Lover
The Gift
Love Bombed

You might also like episodes of Sideways and I'm currently listening to Yellowface on the App.

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about this subject:

I enjoy The Martin Lewis show, Moneybox, You and yours when I'm gardening/ cleaning.

Maybe not the sort of thing you’re looking for but I quite like Sliced Bread and The Infinite Monkey Cage.

In Sliced Bread, the presenter investigates popular or new products and looks at the science behind them as to whether they are as good as they they claim to be. So for example face creams, fitness trackers, vacuum cleaners…

The IMC is a science programme but lighthearted and funny. Brian Cox and Robin Ince have guests on, usually some of whom are scientists and they discuss science topics in a humourous and accessible way. I listened to one yesterday about dogs vs cats. Funny but also interesting to hear from vets and biologists about the differences between cats and dogs and why humans like them.

Neither programme requires lots of concentration but they’re easy things to listen to when I’m walking the dog/driving/doing housework.

Listened to all of these! I love bbc sounds. Not mentioned yet:

The real dictators
the crypto queen
Bad women
This is not a pity memoir by abi Morgan
Dead competitive
The cruelty - a child unclaimed
Hillsborough the full story (this is so sad i keep crying so not one to listen to out and about)

Elderflower14 · 09/03/2024 07:45

Desert Island Discs.. I particularly recommend the surgeon David Nott and Professor Dame Elizabeth Anionwu... Both excellent!!

PoppingTomorrow · 09/03/2024 07:47

I'm not sure when they stop being shows and start being podcasts but I would also suggest
Ladykillers,
more In Our Time,
Desert Island Discs,
the recent Jon Ronson things fell apart
Stronger Stuff
, Natalie Haynes stands up for the classics

I'm also going to try Young Again and One to One

PoppingTomorrow · 09/03/2024 07:48

Oh and Witch Trials of JK Rowling was interesting

Don't know how I forgot the Crypto Queen as I'm halfway through one at the moment.

FiveFoxes · 09/03/2024 07:52

I love Cautionary Tales. It's so interesting and well delivered. It's a story of something where things have gone wrong and the reasons why and including how it relates to other things.

Really hard to explain but best podcast I have ever heard.

amberedover1 · 09/03/2024 08:00

Great to have a thread about BBC sounds
I don't have lots of subscriptions and use BBC mainly.
Hate it when people post suggestions and I've no idea where to find them.
I do have the free version of Pocket something but find it really hard to navigate.

WinterCarlisle · 09/03/2024 08:02

Great thread! I love a podcast.

I really like Curious Cases with Rutherford and Fry (my DC like this too, we listen on car journeys)

Also echo @Elderflower14 about Desert Island Discs (as an aside, @Elderflower14 , have you read David Nott’s book, War Doctor? It’s EXCELLENT)

I also like Sideways, the original Fortunately with Jane Garvey and Fi Glover, Life Changing, The Life Scientific and The Documentary Podcast. Deeply Human is also really interesting.

I can’t rate podcasts enough: they’ve made the tedium of house work bearable.

User478 · 09/03/2024 08:04

Fake Heiress (it was out years before the netflix drama)
The great post office trial (again, years before ITV's Mr bates)
John Finnemore's souvenir programme
I quite like Evil Genius (although it's a bit of a purity spiral and doesn't really address the difference in life between when the person lived and now)
You're Dead to me
The Lazarus Heist

Unfortunatelynoonehaseverknownaboutthis · 09/03/2024 08:06

I love Uncanny...investigating the paranormal

Also by the same guy. Witch farm and. The battersea poltergeist

Taylormiffed · 09/03/2024 08:07

It's a fair cop. His episode about indecent exposure in series 6 is very good. And Zeus the police dog in series 4.

A through examination by Dr Chris and Xand. Listen from series 1 though. Series 3 has just finished.

CadyEastman · 09/03/2024 08:08

t's a fair cop. His episode about indecent exposure in series 6 is very good. And Zeus the police dog in series He's coming to our local Theatre soon. Might have to get tickets.

Redcase · 09/03/2024 08:14

Same as amberedover, I only have BBC sounds so this is a great thread.
I loved Paradise which is a true crime one. Not my usual thing but really enjoyed it. Also Vishal, which has already been mentioned.
Michael Mosley’s Just One Thing is a good health and wellbeing one.
Ive recently discovered there are audio books on BBC sounds and have loved listening to The Remains of the Day, Middlemarch and am currently on Elizabeth Day’s Magpie. These are genuinely helpful at getting me out of bed in the morning as I want to listen to the next episode on my way to work!

We like Sliced Bread too. It has a wittily named sister programme, Toast, which looks at businesses or products that did very well for a time and then failed.

More or Less is excellent. Looks behind statistical claims in the news.

Justleaveitblankthen · 09/03/2024 08:22

BBC Sounds is my Go To For Podcasts.

Same as others:
Uncanny

You & Yours

Dessert Island Discs

Michael Moseley

Those Van Tulkien twins

Young Again (Kirsty Young)

Life Changing

But my absolute favourite at the moment is actually a running radio 4 play with Joanna Lumley & Roger Allam:
Conversations From A long Marriage.
It's bloody brilliant 😄

BarrelOfOtters · 09/03/2024 08:24

I like more or less, they look at statistics from the news and, usually, find out they are bollocks.

Backwiththeillbehaviour · 09/03/2024 08:27

Chris Skinners countryside podcast. He has been on BBC radio Norfolk for 30yrs. His podcasts are my catnip.

Jayinthetub · 09/03/2024 08:32

File on 4 and Guardian podcasts are good too OP - current interesting news stuff

Santasbigredbobblehat · 09/03/2024 08:32
