Does your cat supervise the laundry?

My cat tirelessly supervises every aspect of the laundry. She is extremely conscientious, especially when supervising the pegging out, which is her area of particular expertise.

I mentioned it to my mum, who said that her cat, Bob, also supervises the pegging out - and gets quite cross if he finds my mother has started without his supervision.

And then yesterday I was stuck on a train watching a man in his back garden peg out laundry under the watchful eye of his two cats.

Is this a universal thing? Does your cat supervise the laundry?

My cat likes to supervise the washing machine, and feels humans cannot be trusted in the bathroom without feline supervision.

Aww love a cat thread. Mine brought me so much joy, still miss her.
She also monitored baths, workmen and usually beat me up the stairs when dd woke up crying when she was a baby.

GoldLurker · 09/03/2024 09:18

My cat supervises everything.
Her particular strength is DIY. Anything that involves tools requires her presence as site foreman.
We used to think she was the apprentice learning the skills she would need but over the years it became apparent her on sire role is much more senior.

Mine supervises most things, but her special subjects are bed changing and printing. She LOVES the printer.

I have another printer lover. DCat also likes to supervise gardening.

MrsMurphyIWish · 09/03/2024 10:32

My cat will sit on my marking. One day I hope she grows opposable thumbs and picks up a pen so she can help me out (although judging from her face I think most comments would be “wtf?”!)

Dotdotdotdot19 · 09/03/2024 10:51

My youngest cat enjoys inspecting the laundry post dryer to ensure that it has all dried correctly. This entails him sitting in the basket and snuffling around. If it meets his satisfaction then he will let us know by falling asleep. He also supervises me (only me) sleeping at night by sitting on my legs and biting me if I move too much. This is not as useful as I have a 6 month old so move around a fair amount. If I dare to get up, I am hunted until I get back in to bed.

The older cat is more of an observer. Her judgement for all tasks and humans is visceral. She also hates strangers and has swiped at them in her younger days. Now she just growls occasionally from the top of the fridge.

Two of mine closely supervise pretty much everything. My breakfast just got closely examined.
They do love laundry being pegged outside. One has a special interest in bedtime and escorts everyone to bed before she sleeps too. She was very patient with me last night as I was very late and faffing about and still she waited. Until I got into bed, when she hands over to her sister who supervises until I fall asleep.

Our old boy once supervised the entire refurbishment of the bathroom. By the time the fitter finished the job he had changed his mind about cats and said he wanted one just like my old boy. 😻

There's only one thing my cats prefer to hanging out the laundry and that's watching me sew.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/03/2024 11:11

Both - Ocado Monitors
Both - Repair, Maintenance and Installation Inspectors
One - Bed Making Manager, base sheet assessment and quilt smoothing specialist
Other One - Official clean bedlinen quality control, designated fur replacement operative

Neither lower themselves to mere washing unless it's to sit precariously underneath the airer as DP hurls wet clothing on top, although that (since the collapse incident) might be more of a thrillseeking behaviour than actual supervisory role.

bananaboats · 09/03/2024 11:19

Mine supervises absolutely everything!

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 09/03/2024 11:42

My two don't do anything useful, one sits in the hallway meowing until i give up and move my work stuff to the kitchen and the other sits on my desk putting meetings in my boss's calendar, only they're meetings at midnight or all day ones with nothing in. The worst one was when he updated a meeting in my boss's calendar, thankfully I could undo what he did because it was to the CEO of the company!

MsSquiz · 09/03/2024 12:21

Not the laundry but we have 1 cat who is pretty much the household HSE superior! She will let you know if a door is closed that should be open (or vice versa) if her sister has gotten stuck somewhere she shouldn't be, if the kids have left something in the wrong place. She also comes to tell DH and I when she seems it bedtime.
And if you don't deal with whatever is offending her, she will sit and stare at you, with the occasional eye roll of "you can't get the staff" until you sort it out.

Her sister does none of this is, and is a super lazy cuddle cat who is forever being told off by her!

Daffyyellow · 09/03/2024 12:27

DCat guards the bathroom while I shower but nags for Dreamies when I use the loo. She’s obsessed with changing the sheets and likes to supervise in the sewing room. Meanwhile Old Dog is the Ocado alert system and barks when they arrive, never know how she knows as she’s deaf and can’t see the drive!

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 09/03/2024 12:36

One of my foster cats liked to get in the washing machine to make sure I hadn’t overloaded it. I never switched it on without checking that I could see where she was.

Her sister always supervised the washing up & fell in love with the coconut fibre scourer. If I didn’t put it in the cupboard after use she’d always nab it to play chase with.

They both loved helping me make the bed. They’d ride on the fitted sheet as I pulled it over the corners & then sit on the duvet & run away from the cover as I put it on. Apparently it was all very exciting.

My three supervise absolutely every single aspect of my life the entire time I’m in the house 🤣 I can’t remember the last time I even had a wee in peace - the bathroom door blew shut the other night and there was immediate yowling from the other side as if she’d been shot!

TonTonMacoute · 09/03/2024 12:41

My girl cat is supervising the extensive building work we are currently having done on our house. She particularly enjoyed inspecting the scaffolding.

One of the builders is completely besotted with her, I heard him chatting away to her the other day.

GinnyWizz · 09/03/2024 12:42

Oh yes.

I had to start shutting one of mine out when I was on the toilet because she had this kamikaze desire to jump down it, and I’d had to do one too many last minute grabs.

She’d shout at me from the other side of the door & would always be sitting next to it with her back to me when I came out.

InglouriousBasterd · 09/03/2024 13:52

Oh mine loves to supervise laundry! She supervises most activities to be fair - when DD was little it was Lego, jigsaws etc. and now it’s make up. Her litter tray is next to the loo so if she’s not guarding the door, she’s having a companion wee next to you!

VimtoVimto · 09/03/2024 14:47

Mine supervises the shopping being unpacked, and is also post monitor. If she hears anything coming through the letterbox she dashes to the door and pulls it out the letterbox. Unfortunately she hasn’t mastered the art of bringing it too me.

ManorMouse · 09/03/2024 15:47

Current cat is dedicated to freedom of movement. At no time must there be a closed door between us or the doorframe gets clawed.

He also is the official meeter and greeter of anyone who calls to the house whether they actually like cats or not.

Despite being the owner of a thick fur coat, he has been known to complain that the bed is too cold so I must turn on the electric blanket on his side of the bed. He will keep me awake until the bed has reached optimal temperature before going to sleep.

A previous cat was obsessed with changing the sheets as she loved the smell of fresh sheets. She would pace about the upstairs complaining about slow humans until I had finished.

Then she would climb under the duvet and spend hours there emerging at last smelling of fabric conditioner.

EsmaCannonball · 09/03/2024 16:16

No, but he does like sit on top of the loo and watch while the dog gets a bath. One suspects this is less to do with supervising my shampooing technique and more about watching his greatest enemy suffer.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 09/03/2024 22:49

Mine tries to lie in the laundry basket.

Catsmere · 10/03/2024 00:46

My younger one sits on top of the laundry basket (a tall one with a lid) so she can look me in the eye while I'm at the loo. My older one prefers to use the basket as a launching pad for getting onto my lap so she can wash my face, then onto my shoulder. It's distracting to say the least! 😆
