My Gardener mows my big garden front and back.. keeps my bushes down and charges £30 every two weeks.
All of it gets put in my garden recycling bin.
I'm in West Yorkshire.

Oh my goodness! So that’s a big difference!!

large front garden including along side of house and medium back garden. front border with shrubbery. £25 a fortnight for grass mowing and keeping the border today. takes the grass away and dos i know not what with it. north east.
£110 is excessive unless you want stripes on your chamomile lawn, rare species flowers tending to and the small fruit orchard maintaining.

Fridayfederica · 08/03/2024 13:28

About £25/hour in SE London seems to be the going rate for regular maintenance so your quote sounds very high.

samsums · 08/03/2024 16:07

Around here in Hampshire 'basic' gardening such as this costs around £20-25 an hour - in a normal house with small garden I would expect mowing a lawn to take about an hour ish with then a bit extra for weeding and generally tidying so you should get it all done in 2 hours.

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 08/03/2024 16:09

I’m in the Midlands and pay £15 per hour.

Mynewnameis · 08/03/2024 16:10

Expensive yes.

Dartwarbler · 08/03/2024 16:10

£100 per month for 2 visits , around 2 man hours per visit so £25/hour

rainbowunicorn · 08/03/2024 16:10

Hiw many hours will it be every fortnight?

Mistyhill · 08/03/2024 16:14

SE we were paying £20 an hour now 18 months ago. And the gardener needed 4 hours to make it worth it.

seems fair for a skilled job. She had a lot of knowledge.

Bumblebeeinatree · 08/03/2024 16:16

What is the hourly rate and how many hours? You need a breakdown and then if they only do an hour you can just pay for an hour.

OhFortheLoveOv · 08/03/2024 19:32

It’s 110 per visit which is fortnightly it will only take 2 hours each time!! Feel they maybe taking the pee!
hasn’t broken the rate down at all… I really don’t know how to reply without saying… are you crazy it’s £220 a month !!

£25 - £30 per hour here for a professional gardener in affluent part of the south-west so don't pay more than that!

mags2024 · 08/03/2024 19:49

l am in Wiltshire. Trained Gardener ( Sparsholt College ) and apprentice.
£200 for fortnightly visit. They do tree maintenance as required and new planting as l request and they advise. l pay for plants as extra obviously. After 20 years of living at same house and doing very little we paid to have it completely made over and "man cave" for husband. / spare room. 20K for that ( Garden Retreats ) and 25k for garden. This is more than we paid for our house. However we are not gardeners and have a holiday home so are a way alot . l have to say it is wonderful to have someone do it especially as my mobility has unexpectedly nose dived so OH is doing so much more in house

I live in the Surrey/ Hampshire borders. Gardeners range from £20 - £30 (and their experience varies).

I have a young guy who does basics but not mowing, works with a colleague and charges £20 each per man hour. They generally come round 5hrs every two weeks from Spring.

I also have an older very knowledgeable and experienced gentleman who charges £35 per hour and we use him at least four times a year (lee's use him more but he has long standing clients). He does a full day and works like a machine

Gagagagagaga · 08/03/2024 20:02

£25ph with no mowing

Cookerhood · 08/03/2024 20:08

£25 per man hour here (home counties)

Bobbi730 · 08/03/2024 20:42

I'm a gardener and I charge £20 per hour but I'm going to have to put my rate up as I can't make ends meet on less. I'm experienced, qualified and insured. I also have to maintain tools, a car etc.
I would get an hourly rate or just tell them you don't need them and find someone else. It sounds very expensive.

DilemmaDelilah · 09/03/2024 04:35

I have a chap who comes every fortnight to do stuff in the garden (no lawn) and he charges £20 per hour, which is cheap for where we are and it is fiendishly difficult to find anyone to do it anyway. He's not great on knowing what is a plant and what is a weed (got him to tidy up a narrow border along the drive and came home to find he had carefully left a big clump of ragged robin...) , so if you want real knowledge you may well have to pay more.

Having said that we couldn't afford to pay what you have been quoted.

TerfTalking · 09/03/2024 05:25

Proper weeding is time consuming and expensive, grass cutting less so.

Id fill your borders with as many shrubs as you can after it’s weeded and then cover in bark, topping up the bark annually.

thats what I did, took a few years for the shrubs and flowering plants to establish and spread but they were all cheap from Morrisons. Otherwise I would be weeding forever.

You mention 'they' in this post.
If this is 2 people for 2 hours, it equates to £27.50 p/h which is still slightly above the other prices being mentioned here.

My sister pays £70 for one person to mow lawn, weed beds and sweep up leaves. This takes 3 hours twice a month (100 foot garden - Surrey).

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 09/03/2024 06:08

I have a small garden, all grass. Probably 60*13 ft. I pay £25 for someone to come and mow & weed it - takes about an hour.

OhFortheLoveOv · 09/03/2024 23:49

Nope its not 2 people just one and I could understand if we had a large garden with lots of plants to maintain but it really is small space and only want a mow and some weeding of two borders ,one small strip in front of house and very small one in back garden which are both already well maintained. When I quested the rate I was met with “it might take me an hour or it might take me two.. so it’s a good deal!” politely disagreed and said we would not be using his services.

Well, if it's that easy just do it yourself.

Problem solved.
