Have we lost the plot - excessive emails and texts

Fulshaw · 07/03/2024 11:38

I ordered something from a high street retailer. This resulted in no less than 12 emails and 4 text messages about my order. Confirmation, updates on the delivery etc.

Made a dentist appointment - I got 3 emails and 3 text messages about one appointment. Each text and email said the same thing as the other. Confirmation, reminder etc.

That’s 22 pieces of communication about two mundane, everyday activities.

We’ve gone insane haven’t we? Our constant and incessant need for information.

Yep

Scarletttulips · 07/03/2024 12:08

Totally agree.

My bugbear at the moment is fucking Teams. Get sent emails and then teams messages to check I've seen the email. FUCK OFF.

A lot of the time it's either too much or too little!

Zoraflora · 07/03/2024 12:11

Yes I agree, way too much information.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 07/03/2024 12:12

We have

Even when I say to people we buy from, utilities etc, please no BS emails and worse still texts - it happens

for the non important stuff we give them our landline and they try hard for the mobile but is a no

Where we seek quotes, we give them the main emails but the mobile number is one we don't use, lol. There, we will contact them if quote/info looks ok

rainydaysandwednesdays · 07/03/2024 12:27

Agree!

Yeah. I feel like I have two inboxes at work now.

And all the bloody WhatsApp groups. Grrr.

DancingFerret · 07/03/2024 12:34

All of that - and my GP surgery asking for reviews after appointments.

Ours is set up so that if you ignore a team's message it fucking emails you to tell you that it is there!

JonVoightBaddyWhoGrowls · 07/03/2024 12:36

The dentist is because so many people don't bother to turn up. Ditto NHS and multiple other types of medical appointment.

Re the delivery - does seem excessive but I think it's because the workflow goes across different organisations. So there's the people you bought it from, the delivery company etc. And each has to update you. Plus, if they don't, they receive 500 calls from customers demanding to know when it will turn up.

Surely these are all just messages and emails you don't even read or acknowledge?

Peekaboobo · 07/03/2024 12:37

Its fucking ridiculous. YANBU

And don't even get me started on the "how did we do" texts/emails sent after every transaction. Fuck off! I don't send you texts and emails asking that every time I talk to you!

And the double up reminders. Can't just send one, have to send a text AND an email!

purplecorkheart · 07/03/2024 12:40

The Beauty Salon I go to really only takes online booking. I get an email and text to tell me the slot I booked, I then get a receipt both by email and text for the deposit I pay and then the same again saying my appointments are confirmed. When I arrive for my appointment I get a text and email saying that I have checked in. Then I get an receipt and then a request for a review.

Set your status to "offline " in teams. People think you're off. You still receive messages and calls but not as many as folks think you're not online.

Fulshaw · 07/03/2024 12:51

Glad it’s not just me.

I get that some of it is justified.

The duplicate use of email and text to send the same message is probably the most annoying.

Yes, I agree. Some suppliers bombard you with the same information many times, yet others barely even acknowledge/confirm the order or appointment. None really manage to hit the middle ground of basic messages.

And every single time you receive one of those messages you stop what you are doing and read them. Every. Single. Time. Thats 10 interruptions. For one appointment.

pambeesleyhalpert · 07/03/2024 12:59

I think this about my MW appointments. I don't get how people miss them because I get about 3/4 before every appointment!

Mazuslongtoenail · 07/03/2024 13:01

Totally. I don’t give a damn that my parcel has left a warehouse to be put on a lorry to a central sorting office.

Two emails for me - thanks for my order, it’s due x date. And then it’s due today.

Both with links to returns on them.

HaHa I'm the opposite
I get e-mails to say I have sent you a TEAMS message

IamRoyFuckingKent · 07/03/2024 13:03

you 100% ANBU, a recent one from me:

"how likely are you to refer a friend to Stoke Mandeville A&E department?"

WTAF? I mean, never because a) it's shit, utterly shit and b) I wouldn't 'refer' them, they'd rock up there if it was an accident or emergency presumably

I am fed up of being asked for feedback on everything: my delivery driver, every since purchase I make online etc etc and I doubt very much any of it makes any difference.

Mazuslongtoenail · 07/03/2024 13:03

I went to a meeting for work the other day in an offsite warehouse. Checked in, got an email with a link where I can look at the badges I’ve collected every time I log in somewhere using the same software 🥳. Erm, I don’t collect ‘meetings in warehouses’ as my hobby so don’t need a sticker chart thank you.

IamRoyFuckingKent · 07/03/2024 13:04

I also refuse to give my date of birth as I don't see how it's relevant if I'm ordering a coat.

God I wish I had that! They'd never ask again!
