Have we lost the plot - excessive emails and texts

I ordered something from a high street retailer. This resulted in no less than 12 emails and 4 text messages about my order. Confirmation, updates on the delivery etc.

Made a dentist appointment - I got 3 emails and 3 text messages about one appointment. Each text and email said the same thing as the other. Confirmation, reminder etc.

That’s 22 pieces of communication about two mundane, everyday activities.

We’ve gone insane haven’t we? Our constant and incessant need for information.

Have you ever sold anything on Vinted? Jesus wept the emails. Jane wants to buy your jeans. Don't forget about the jeans now. Here's the label for the jeans. Thanks for putting the jeans in the big cupboard outside Tesco. The man has collected the jeans form the bog cupboard outside Tesco. The jeans have arrived in the big cupboard outside Jane's Tesco now. Jane's collected the jeans. Jane's paid you for the jeans. Jane's left feedback on the jeans, see what she thinks.
A fucking message for each of these bastard events. If I want so addicted to decluttering I'd come off there completely.

😂

I get an average of 3 emails a day from school. I don't even have time to read them most of the time.

The multiple review-requesting ones are particularly annoying, especially when the subject line is 'reminder to...'. as if I have an obligation to give them a review. A 'reminder to' pay my gas bill is OK, but to review my vitamin delivery/vet - not OK. if they would like to pay me my standard hourly rate for my time to write a review, I will consider their kind invitation, otherwise stop asking.

Also just too many forms of communication. It's an administrative nightmare and I can't keep track of who prefers which type of comms or where their last message to me might be: whatsapp, messenger, gmail, hotmail, chat, spaces, class charts, teams, text, online phone messages, the (very, very) occasional letter

The killer is that if you just ignore them and don’t delete all of this needless, unwanted, tedious spam, it is being backed up and stored at great expense to the environment.

I booked a haircut and got 3 texts and 3 emails telling me to log on to their website because they needed more details! I booked online and selected a trim in the first place. What else could they possibly need to know?! Then 30 seconds after i’d paid the bill i got a text and an email asking how my experience was. Fuck off.

Couldn't agree more. Every so often I go on an unsubscribing spree clicking the button in the emails, but still I have silly numbers of them arriving. You buy an item which you genuinely want to receive a confirmation for and this is taken as approval to bombard you.
What I can't understand is why companies can't see that sending emails every day is going to trigger an unsubscribe whereas sending maybe one a month might keep me interested enough. I really am keen to know when they are having a sale but receiving a silly number just clogs up my inbox and my brain thus leading me to decide I'd rather just miss out on the sale news. Don't the people working there also have this problem?!

I dont mind reminder emails and texts so much, but I ordered a sofa in store on saturday. Ive had 3 feeback request emails, 1 via text, an email to confirm order, an email to remind me to measure my doorway, a text following up to remind me to leave feedback. Its not due for 8 weeks so i cant unsubscribe yet but jeez. I recently went through my emails and unsubscribed every single thing besides work and childs school. It was bliss till i ordered the sofa..

SquareCrumpets · 07/03/2024 22:05

I have been doing a clear out after filling up my hotmail account. I have deleted THOUSANDS (currently 37k) of emails, and am now in the process of unsubscribing from many companies. On average, for every item I have bought on line, I think I have acquired about 300 marketing emails.

Has anyone mentioned the cunty Duolingo owl and his snide emails yet? "You made me sad" FUCK OFF

SquareCrumpets · 07/03/2024 22:13

@Stickthatupyourdojo that was my exact response when I got the “sad” email.

MermaidEyes · 08/03/2024 08:58

The worst ones I've received are the monthly newsletters from the funeral directors we organised my mums funeral with. Do I want to be reminded of it every month? No fucking thanks.
