How am I meant to know if it is left or right just by looking at these words?

Might help if I post the photo!

Which words?
A gauche = on the left
A droite = on the right

NCTDN · 06/03/2024 22:09

But how would I know which one fills the gap if they both start with à?

Both are right so yes it’s silly and annoying… report as issue? Unless it lets you pick either?

NCTDN · 06/03/2024 22:12

No I was wrong according to the app.

I speak French. 1st prenez la premiere rue à gauche = take the first street on the left
Don't get the second one
Reception à droite? Reception on the right
Have u shown all the gaps?

WhiteCatmas · 06/03/2024 22:14

You can flag the answer when it’s confusing.

NCTDN · 06/03/2024 22:14

No I'm correct with rue so it's just the last gap that they say is wrong.

OP posts:
Underthesea65 · 06/03/2024 22:15

prendre la première rue à gauche is left
Prenez la is right

Turkeyhen · 06/03/2024 22:15

Surely either gauche or droite would be correct Confused

NCTDN · 06/03/2024 22:17

Prendre means take the left and prenez means take the right? That's so confusing but thank you for explaining.
Since the introduction of max as well as super Duolingo, the basic version has very few explanations.

CatherinedeBourgh · 06/03/2024 22:17

Was it part of a dialogue or is it just that on its own? Because otherwise either could be right

Yep, exactly. Hope that helps you

CatherinedeBourgh · 06/03/2024 22:18

No, prenez is just the imperative, it could be either left or right.

Prenez is take

Prendre is to take.

No it's not. You can even Google it if you don't believe me

Nope, really not.

Turkeyhen · 06/03/2024 22:20

Surely prenez is right - if you're giving directions, it's an imperative?

CatherinedeBourgh · 06/03/2024 22:20

Don't need to google, have lived in France for 20 years!

I must have been taught wrong then but it's what I always used

NCTDN · 06/03/2024 22:21

So confusing!
I've got another one. The choices for the words were boulangerie, pharmacie or montagne. They're all la so how would I know which one? It was pot luck that I got it right.

Is there a picture clue? Otherwise I agree there’s no way you could know. I’m doing a different language on duolingo and there’s never been multiple possible correct answers. Sometimes a little cartoon picture is quite important though.

CatherinedeBourgh · 06/03/2024 22:24

Are you sure this is not all in reference to a map they've shown you earlier?

GinForBreakfast · 06/03/2024 22:24

Yes, is there a picture clue?

TenThousandSpoons · 06/03/2024 22:24

Or sometimes you are listening to the language and filling in what you hear - is your volume up?

Nope, that's not how Duolingo works unfortunately!

OP, I'm having similar issues with it at the moment! I'm considering paying the £59/yr to see if it makes more sense. I'm only on my first week, but I went in at some sort of medium level after an online test as I used to speak French quite well.... 20+yrs ago.

Also, I've spent 3 days on variations of about ten words - is that how this goes? It's driving me slightly nuts.
