Any French experts who can help me with Duolingo?

How am I meant to know if it is left or right just by looking at these words?

OP posts:
NCTDN · 06/03/2024 22:28

No picture clue and no speaking on either of these.
At least I'm not missing something obvious!

The older version was better when you could choose a comprehension style question, speaking or a mixture. I'm so reluctant to fork out for what's used to be free.

I was just saying to DH that Duolingo is the perfect app. It’s frustrating that you are encountering these bugs.

What level are you on? I’d always assumed the French series would be one of the most well designed ones, but obviously not!

GinForBreakfast · 06/03/2024 22:36

I pay for Duolingo and don't get any bugs. It's not that expensive.

While I only did it to a level so I'm not an expert, but it's what I was taught. I'm just trying to get in contact with my friend who studied it at university to see if he can help

Dewdilly · 06/03/2024 22:37

Underthesea65 · 06/03/2024 22:17

Yep, exactly. Hope that helps you

Gosh, no, that’s not right at all. Both prendre and prenez mean “take”. Prenez is just a different verb form of the main verb prendre.

Cherrysoup · 06/03/2024 22:38

Prendre-infinitive. I love posters contradicting someone who speaks French!

It can’t be what you were taught, it really can’t. This is basic year one French.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 06/03/2024 22:40

Adding to the 'bof' over prendre. It could be prends la rue (if you're talking to a 'tu') or prenez la rue (if vous) but prendre is 'to take' so would only be used following tu dois/vous devrez prendre.

Your OP is right, it could have been either - only if there was audio that was missing. Seems unfair - flag it! And click to see if there's a message board about it on the app 👌🏻

Well I don't know why it would have popped into my head as soon as I saw it. Obviously I'm wrong . To be fair though, I'm terminally ill and on a lot of medication, so I probably shouldn't have commented. But I thought I was helping. Sorry

Marasme · 06/03/2024 22:46

... in a set of instructions, "Prendre la 1ère rue à droite" would be absolutely fine.

otherwise, shame that free duo seems to have quickly turned worst with intro of super and max.

CandiCaneicles · 06/03/2024 22:48

Ive found very few errrors on the spanish.
But havent had questions like these.

MrsMikeHeck · 06/03/2024 23:05

I don’t think I’ve had this format question with the German tree @CandiCaneicles

MrsMikeHeck · 06/03/2024 23:11

Your comments have sparked a good debate @Underthesea65 . I’m trying to understand language and grammar more, so it was interesting to (try to) follow what people were saying. I’m also a bit obsessed with Duolingo and very happy to see an active thread about it pop up.

I’m sorry you’re so ill. I can’t imagine x

Loulou599 · 06/03/2024 23:16

The most irritating thing about this thread is how the OPs dilemma was clear and succinctly described in the OP, and we then had a dozen dumb as fuck irrelevant comments that had nothing to do with the original issue

MrsMikeHeck · 06/03/2024 23:20

The first few comments are only ‘dumb as fuck’ if you don’t know the format of Duolingo.

DoubleOuch · 06/03/2024 23:20

I was going to reply and say that you've found an actual bug in the duolingo French course. I've been doing it for years and only had one or two that were actually wrong - everything else was my poor understanding. But this one is interesting. Using Google translate, English to French, it gives Prendre with Gauche and Prenez with Droite, as other posters have said. I have no idea why. However, reverse translating you can put Prenez with gauche or droite and it happily translates into English "Take the first street on the left/right". If you put prendre it translates as "take the first street on the right" but "take the first street left" which is presumably a google translate problem but further adds to the confusion.

It's really not. It's as Catherine says - prendre = infinitive, prenez = imperative

MrsMikeHeck · 06/03/2024 23:30

@Underthesea65 already knows this, see her post at 22.44.

Thank you. I'm in too much pain and too tired to reply to everyone telling me I'm wrong

But the OPs original issue was nothing to do with prendre vs prenez or gauche vs droite

Hey @Underthesea65 - I would just hide this thread now. MN should be a fun distraction and people are just going to get involved in a French-off, without reading whole thread. Especially as the hour gets later.

I wish you all the very best. I hope you have support from other areas of MN. Or at least a bit of fun bouncing around the more bonkers threads in active convos. Hopefully our paths cross elsewhere on MN, but maybe duck out of this one. Xx

Thank you. Yes I actually have my own thread going where I have the most wonderful people in it supporting me. Thank you for being so kind. Hopefully see you around. Take care

Sorry, but I can't interpret the OPs original question as anything other than 'is the correct answer "droite" or "gauche"'. What do you think is being asked?
