What the hell is this noise?!

I'm sat at home in bed. Kids are asleep. DH is away for work and I'm watching true crime on YouTube. Go for a wee and the bathroom window is slightly open. It's just gone 11pm and I can hear .... I'm not sure what.... I can only describe it as cheering on of... something.

We live in a suburban area of a large town in the north west with a cricket ground and recreational park nearby with football pitches etc within about 1/4 mile. We can hear cheering and clapping etc in summer as expected with cricket and football matches going on. But, late on a Tuesday night in March I can hear multiple male voices shouting "come on!" "Go! Go! Go!" And whooping and clapping. It's coming from a reasonable distance not a nearby house. Definitely outside. Been going on for about an hour.

We have woodland and parks nearby. I just can't fathom out what it could be at this time of night that's going on! Any ideas?

Teens messing about in the woods and egging each other on?

maudelovesharold · 05/03/2024 23:14

Dogging?

Dogging?

You beat me to that. 😂

LibbyLemoncake · 05/03/2024 23:19

Oh god I hope it isn’t dog fighting 😞

EmmaEmerald · 05/03/2024 23:19

Some of kind of staged fight is my thought.

Really hope not dog fighting.

GN637 · 05/03/2024 23:21

Definitely dogging. Cricket grounds and playing fields are rife with it. Sticky wickets and balls and good parking. What more does your self respecting dogger need of a March evening?

You see that crossed my mind but there are no animal noises however I'm not sure I'd hear it from here.

I'm hoping it's one of the previously mentioned ideas. The thought of dog fighting makes me sick. I don't think they'd be making so much noise though as there are houses nearer than me, I'm sure.

Dogging: Fine they can get on with it.

Dog fighting: Not at all good. I'm a member of some neighbourhood groups on Facebook so might try and see if I can find out anything from there.

Could it be someone's TV? Maybe they have a window open?

It's definitely more mature male voices. It honestly sounds like a cricket match going on. Not too rowdy like a footy match but more polite and jovial IYSWIM

Maybe one of the clubs is showing a UFC or boxing match or similar?

I really doubt it tbh, I can't really describe very well but the sound is being carried on the air like from a distance away?

How random! I really want to know what's going on now! Haha

Could be, I suppose people could be stood outside cheering??

Whatever it is it seems strange doing it this time of night.

CurlewKate · 05/03/2024 23:32

Sport on TV from a different time zone? Test match?

Me too. And this isn't the first time it's happened. I've sort of ignored it before but it just stuck me tonight as being weird as it's March and a Tuesday?!?!

April to September fine.
Friday, Saturday or even Sunday fine.

But, March and Tuesday? At 11pm? Weird.

Have you a street WhatsApp group that you could ask about it on there?

mambojambodothetango · 05/03/2024 23:36

Have you got a street WhatsApp group? You can ask if anyone knows if an event happening? If it did turn out to be something dodgy it might help to have more people who heard it.

Again could be, but it's a tiny cricket club with a tiny shed as a clubhouse. It is coming from that direction though.

Instinctively I don't think it's dog fighting. It's a pretty nice area and I think that sort of thing if it went on around here (and I fervently hope it doesn't) it'd be more low key and hidden.

This sounds very celebratory but I don't get why it's coming from outside. I think those who've guessed a match (boxing or otherwise) may be right

Or dogging 🤷🏻‍♀️

Only between us and the parents of our kids' friends. About 5 households in an estate of about 100 houses. I think they'll be in bed now but will have a chat with them tomorrow.

Definitely ask on Facebook/Nextdoor and see if you can narrow down the are it’s coming from, then maybe you could check it out tomorrow to see if there’s any evidence been left 👀

FizzyStream · 05/03/2024 23:41

No luck from the local Facebook groups. Just adverts for hairdressing and plastering 🫤

Maybe local teen boys fighting? Like proper MMA stuff rather than just thuggery ha.
