What’s your ‘bucket list’ destination… and how old are you?

I’ve always wanted to go to Japan and finally I am going! (Can’t believe it actually, tears were shed)

Joked to my DH I could ‘die happy’ after and he said I’ll just have to pick a new place. (I have a few in mind!)

Asked my mum what her bucket list place was and she said Paris, seems like one of the most achievable destinations from the UK (and I’m definitely going to book this a surprise for her after hearing this!)

Made me wonder about others and if this is an age thing - I guess people travel more now and distances are more achievable.

Where’s your bucket list destination?

Tibet
I am 55.
I have been to 60 countries.

RaraRachael · 06/03/2024 18:06

I've always loved finding out about Tibet as did my dad and my son. I'd be scared to visit in case it didn't live up to my expectations

mitogoshi · 06/03/2024 18:21

Patagonia, well dream is to do multiple countries in South America

caringcarer · 06/03/2024 18:24

I've always wanted to go to see the Boxing Day Ashes in Australia. My Dad always wanted to go too but died before we got to go together. It's difficult because it's over Xmas. However my DH is retiring early and all my DC now live in their own homes so DH and me and we are going next time they have one end of 2025. He's putting some of his lump sum aside so we can go.

Bhutan has been pretty much top of my list for years but for a long time I couldn't afford it, and now I can, I don't think I'm fit enough. How strenuous was it?

It was actually not too bad, it would be as strenuous as you want it to be. We were with a group and about a quarter of the group did the trek to the Tiger's Nest and they did find that quite strenuous. The biggest issue really was the altitude. We went as high as 4,000m and I needed a bit of a breather walking up steps to a temple even though it was probably no more than 60 steps. The tour guides make allowances for tourists not being able to do what the locals do. The first day I was a bit light-headed and spin-y but after that I felt wonderful, however quite a few of the group had mild altitude sickness the whole time we were there.

It wouldn't be ideal for someone with mobility problems though. I was travelling with my Mum and between the time that she booked it and the time that we travelled she developed arthritis in her knee. The thing that she found most difficult was going down steps and the entire country is mountainous and there are steps every where, even when you're walking on the pavements in the centre of town, because nothing is flat for very long. Also not ideal for people with motion sickness (me), again because it's mountainous and even though the roads are in good condition they are all very bendy and up and down, much like a slow motion roller coaster.

The absolute worst thing is that there are only a few airports that you can fly to Bhutan from, we flew in from Nepal which is quite a chaotic and bureaucratic airport. It was so unbelievably gorgeous that it was worth the hassle of getting there.

Been to a lot of the places on my list. One real bucket list place remaining is Cartagena de Indias in Colombia.

A word of warning re Japan. For most people, once you've been once, you will want to go back!

Japan was DS bucket list place and I first took him in 2010. I thought ok we can go and I can tick it off the list. Have been back roughly every 18 months (apart from Covid times) and am going back there again in the Autumn! #

I'm not rich. I stay in cheap places. You can get decent business hotels or studio apartments for around £25 per night. If I want to visit a different part of Japan I just take a cheap internal flight. The rail passes are pricey. So anyone who is planning to go and wants to see Kyoto etc, check how much a flight is from Tokyo to Osaka + any train travel from there (local trains are far cheaper than the Shinkansen). It could work out cheaper than the pass, which I believe has now gone up to £400 p/p!

As for my own bucket list, I still have a yearning to sledge down the Great Wall of China! Which I saw on a video. I've also heard a few people rave about Costa Rica and it looks like somewhere I'd enjoy so would like to go there.

Edited

Japan was my bucket list. Did it loved it. Want to go back. And now DS wants to go.

I've done a fair amount of my bucket list tbh.

Still want to do South Korea, Route 66, Berlin, train journey in the Alps, every country and microstate in Europe, Vietnam, Norwegian Ffjords, polar bears in Canada.

I'd go back to anywhere in Scandinavia in a heartbeat. The Netherlands are always a home from home.

Off to Eurovision in Malmö in May. Eurovision was bucket list but did Liverpool last year... Though I still want to do it 'properly' abroad!

I've been to most places - drove from London to Mongolia in a banger. Ice hotel, grand canyon, new York, train through Eastern Europe, many work visits to Norway, Romania, Turkey, Germany etc.

But the two places I most want to visit are Syria and Afghanistan - to the northern mountains where Ahmed Shah Masood lived. Perhaps the mountains in Pakistan and Kashmir. I have long planned a trip to everest base camp but from Tibet not Nepal. Hardly anyone goes to the Tibetan base camp but you get the best view of everest from that side. Similarly the best view of niagra falls is from the Canadian side.

I'm in my 60s and health is deteriorating so I'd better get my skates on!

mbosnz · 06/03/2024 19:59

I'm 52.

My list would be New Zealand (home), Japan, and South Africa.

Stringagal · 06/03/2024 20:07

The pyramids and the Nile, ever since I did an Egypt project age five. I’ve travelled all over and ticked many off my wish list but really want to do that one in the lap of luxury, and not with the kids. Next 5-10 years hopefully!

CheersToMe · 06/03/2024 20:18

Mine is to sail across the Atlantic.
I've booked a Cunard passage from New York to Southampton for later this year and I'm very excited for the lazy days and glamorous nights. And no jet lag is a bonus.

somewhereovertherain · 06/03/2024 20:27

I’ve got about 165 destinations on my bucket list. 50.

wurstcase · 12/07/2024 12:45

I'm getting to the age - 48- where starting to worry about how many of my bucket list trips I can realistically still do before not being able to. Thinking of doing longer haul sooner.

Currently: China (with DC next summer), Japan (been but would like to go back and see more), Train from Singapore up through Malaysia to Thailand, southern states of US, the Little Women house in New England and also Prince Edward Island (Anne of Green Gables). Trans Siberian as soon as safe to do so. Iran for sure.

I would definitely fancy a round the world ticket but simply wouldn't be able to take that much holiday. Have been lucky and travelled a lot, and I always get a bit caught between breadth and depth, for example exploring around one place can be more rewarding than doing several countries in a week!

I also highly recommend Myanmar, it was absolutely amazing although I was ill for 9 months afterwards. I lived in central Asia so I know that Stans reasonably well. nature there can be great.

TakeOnFlea · 12/07/2024 13:39

"I also highly recommend Myanmar, it was absolutely amazing although I was ill for 9 months afterwards."

I'm not sure anywhere is worth being ill for a year. What happened?!

Pedallleur · 12/07/2024 13:42

japan for me (in my 60s). mad that many destinations in Europe are 2 hours away or less and if you can find the tickets you might go for a day. once did Paris in a day from Mcr. First flight out/last back.
Afghanistan/Syria are NOT on my list!

DoYouSmokePaul · 12/07/2024 13:44

Japan, too. I’ll be forty next year.

It used to be Russia ☹️ After reading Anna Karenina as a teen. Not likely now.

Jeannne92 · 12/07/2024 13:53

Visit my little bro in the USA but it's not financially possible

haypole · 12/07/2024 13:57

Antarctica
48 years old

snowballsintheoven · 12/07/2024 13:59

Montana/Texas/ranches - think Yellowstone experience Grin

Achievable for us, and very grateful but we are in the years of all inc water parks/busy resorts with the kids for the time being

Florida will be the big holiday for us when the youngest is around 7/8 and the eldest is 14/15 - DC1 has already been once

We really prioritise travel

Badbadbunny · 12/07/2024 14:09

Mine is Australia and I'm 59, so time is running out!

Been to all kinds of other places, i.e. Canada, California, Egypt, Kenya, Jordan, Israel, Russia, and most countries in Europe over the past 40 years.

Australia is always the place that fascinates me because it's just so different. I'd love to go and see all the different animals in their native habitat, swim the Great Barrier Reef, go to see Ayers Rock, travel through the outback, visit traditional Aboriginal villages and learn about their history first hand, see a show in the Sydney Opera House, spend a few days meditating in Olivia Newton John's GAIA retreat. Maybe even a Christmas barbecue on a beach somewhere! I reckon I'd need about a month there to really explore it!

Bambooshoot · 12/07/2024 16:56

Easter Island!

With a tour of Chile thrown in. I couldn’t find anyone who wanted to go with me at the time, and judging by this thread no one else has it on their list either!

Maybe I’m just odd, but I’m fascinated by the Moai statues. I’m now 50, and have been lucky enough to travel the world quite a bit and ticked off most of my bucket list, with holidays /study/ work meetings/ relocations, so it’s just there waiting for once my son is grown, unless he is the one person who wants to go along, which would be awesome!
