What’s your ‘bucket list’ destination… and how old are you?

I’ve always wanted to go to Japan and finally I am going! (Can’t believe it actually, tears were shed)

Joked to my DH I could ‘die happy’ after and he said I’ll just have to pick a new place. (I have a few in mind!)

Asked my mum what her bucket list place was and she said Paris, seems like one of the most achievable destinations from the UK (and I’m definitely going to book this a surprise for her after hearing this!)

Made me wonder about others and if this is an age thing - I guess people travel more now and distances are more achievable.

Where’s your bucket list destination?

I had wanted to go to Bhutan since I was in my early teens. I went last year at age 56, and now I want to go back again.

Bhutan has been pretty much top of my list for years but for a long time I couldn't afford it, and now I can, I don't think I'm fit enough. How strenuous was it?

Did a road trip in the Deep South, Charleston, Savannah, Charlotte plus a lot of the lovely small towns.
Been a dream of mine for ever, and it was everything I hoped it would be. We were 65.

That sounds gorgeous @Tootytoot78

What time of year did you go?

TheSparkofCreation · 06/03/2024 03:30

What appeals to so many of you about Japan?

ShowOfHands · 06/03/2024 03:44

I've spent most of my adult life without a passport and am not so bothered.

I don't have a bucket list destination but would like to go on a steam train holiday. The dream is to sit in a Pullman carriage and write/read, wander to the dining car for a sandwich, sleep in a sleeping compartment and watch mountains and lakes out the window. I'm not sure this holiday exists. All train holidays seem ott and fancy. I don't want to dress for dinner and sip champagne. I want tea in a mug and a cheese toastie. I also don't want to speak to strangers.

I'd quite like to go to a German Christmas market. And Norway. And Wales. And Amsterdam.

No interest in Japan whatsoever but my dc (12 and 16) want to go. We joke that DH could take them and I'll go and sit on a train for a month instead.

I'm 43.

PermanentTemporary · 06/03/2024 03:59

@ShowOfHands hmm maybe try Sweden by train? The landscape is amazing and it's not far away.

San Francisco and the California coast were on my bucket list since I was 20 and I finally went in 2019 aged 50 with my ds. It was everything I'd hoped for and more.

Beezknees · 06/03/2024 06:01

Mine is Japan too. I'm 34. I can't afford it unfortunately though.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 06/03/2024 06:04

Costa Rica but actually thinking I may opt for Borneo. It has wildlife but can mix it up a bit more with city / beach and still looks amazing.

I am pricing it up at the moment but summer holidays are coming in rather pricey....maybe I will leave kids behind and go by myself!

PurBal · 06/03/2024 06:07

Japan is on DH list 40 too. I’ve been but not since I was a child and missed out on a trip to Osaka when I was 22. So we’ll do it one day. He’d also like to do Iceland.

For me: I’d like to do an African safari, wine tasting in NZ and Lake Louise in Canada.

Globules · 06/03/2024 06:12

Mine was Salzburg. I went for my 40th. It was all I'd hoped for. Nothing has taken its place.

Having said that, I've extensively travelled in Asia. I've been to China, NZ, India, Jerusalem, S Africa and the Maldives, which were all places I wanted to go.

I don't get the Japan love, but I'm so glad so many of you are getting there and living the dream. Enjoy!

Moscow is the only one on my want to go list, but it's not bucket list material.

hattie43 · 06/03/2024 06:12

Japan , I'm going in a few months and can't wait

Toddlerteaplease · 06/03/2024 06:14

Barcelona and New York. My sister calls it my thimble list. I'm
42.

LaChienneDesFromages · 06/03/2024 06:19

Mine is Japan too.

Still not made it at 45. My three best friends travelled there together during a uni holiday when we were 20 and I was in hospital having surgery. We hope to make it there in a couple of years, with our teens.

Have a wonderful time!

Garlicking · 06/03/2024 06:26

@ShowOfHands, I don't think there are any steam sleepers any more - but I did find a trip incorporating German Christmas markets with a steam train.

The same website has some lovely-sounding steam rail holidays, mostly in Scotland. No mention of cheese toasties, I'm afraid.

Harz Mountains Christmas Markets Tour | Great Rail Journeys

Visit spectacular Christmas markets in the German towns of Wernigerode, Quedlinburg and Goslar. Our tour also includes a ride on the Broken Railway

Madagascar. Prohibitively expensive and rather dangerous. I should have gone when I was young and adventurous, when I spent all my income travelling the world and had no fear and no responsibilities. Madagascar slipped through the net then somehow and I don’t suppose I’ll ever go now.

India but until their horrific situation around violence towards women is no longer an issue, I won't go. I'm nearly 50; I fear I'll never get there.

Go to southern India - Kerala, Tamil Nadu. Much safer and easy to organise. English commonly spoken.

sandgrown · 06/03/2024 06:34

Always wanted to go to Northern India . Booked twice but had to cancel due to then partner being ill. I then found out my father ,who I have never known, was from that area. Strange how I was always drawn to there . I would also like to go to South Africa and to see much more of Italy. Would like to do the Sound of Music tour in Austria. I travelled a bit when I was younger and was able to go to Jerusalem and Bethlehem when it was relatively peaceful. Such a shame what is happening now.

This was my bucket list destination and it was amazing but I absolutely agree. Even the constant stares and people following us were enough to put me off going back. I went with my friend and stayed with her Indian family.

PinkPondQueen · 06/03/2024 07:00

Lord Howe Island! Most people have never heard of it. Despite lots of visits to Australia over the years as I have family there it saddens me that i've never made it there. It's not hard to get to, there are daily flights from both Sydney and Brisbane but it gets booked up months in advance & is also expensive. I'm in my late forties. One day....!

Tisfortired · 06/03/2024 07:03

California road trip
Japan

Those are my two biggies that I would love to do in my lifetime. I am 33.

backatschool · 06/03/2024 07:16

I am very fortunate to have been everywhere listed above except Bhutan which is also on my list, along with the Galápagos Islands.

bestbefore · 06/03/2024 07:20

I've traveled quite a bit but the Silk Road is my one day place. It looks amazing but quite daunting to try and plan!

RhubarbFairy · 06/03/2024 07:27

Vietnam. I'm 41.

We are considering it in the next couple of years now the DC are older (11 and 13).
