What’s your ‘bucket list’ destination… and how old are you?

I’ve always wanted to go to Japan and finally I am going! (Can’t believe it actually, tears were shed)

Joked to my DH I could ‘die happy’ after and he said I’ll just have to pick a new place. (I have a few in mind!)

Asked my mum what her bucket list place was and she said Paris, seems like one of the most achievable destinations from the UK (and I’m definitely going to book this a surprise for her after hearing this!)

Made me wonder about others and if this is an age thing - I guess people travel more now and distances are more achievable.

Where’s your bucket list destination?

Canada to see those massive Canadian Moosr just mooching along the roads.

I’ve been to Palm Springs and San Diego but would love to go back and do a road trip that includes Yosemite.

All of the New England area, I’d like to walk part of the Appalachian trail.

Hawaii.

Florida Keys.

I don’t have much interest in heading east!

BarrelOfOtters · 06/03/2024 10:07

Japan - I lived there for a couple of years in my 20s, so a long time ago, went back last year after years of wanting to go back. It was brilliant.

Bhutan, Vietnam and Nepal are on the list.

I want to do a night train in Vietnam. Trek in Nepal (need to get fit again).

Also Vienna, it's not far, we could go any time really, but honestly it's been postponed, delayed, crap happened when we were meant to go, I'm almost scared to try and book it again.

BarrelOfOtters · 06/03/2024 10:09

The real bucket list is when we retire - a RTW ticket - South America and rent an apartment in a couple of cities for a month at a time, Asia, probably an Island in the Pacific just because....New Zealand.

shellyleppard · 06/03/2024 10:10

Lego land in Denmark....and I'm 55 !! 😂😂 Also would love to tour Canada by train.....those ones with the glass roof so unspoilt views ❤️

Whatabanana · 06/03/2024 10:12

I'm 51, my daughter is desperate to go to Japan but I'm not. I'd really like to go to Scandinavia as I've never been. Would love the freedom of a year off to just go travelling all over Europe. And if I wasn't so scared I'd maybe like to go to more dangerous places with exciting animals to see in the wild. But I've also got lots of places I'd like to go to in the UK, it's just about finding the time!

StrawberryEater · 06/03/2024 10:13

The Galápagos Islands. But I don’t think it’s worth going with young DC as they won’t enjoy/appreciate it. By the time they are old enough, I’ll be mid to late 50s. So still very doable and I have my sights set on it.

CringeQueen · 06/03/2024 10:15

Mexico for me, particularly Oaxaca and Tulum. I am very lucky to have travelled to most of the places mentioned except Japan which I would also love to see. Would love to return to India too.

I have a passport (took the DC abroad for the first time last year - Paris, Arras and Normandy). I've never considered inter railing. I'll definitely check it out.

@ShowOfHands If you sign up to the interrail site for emails, you'll get notifications of periodic sales on passes. They've just finished a 15% off sale which we've bought our passes in, but we've got 11 months to start our travels. I believe they have sales a number of times a year.
Lots of info about how interrailing works both on their website and on www.seat61.com

mydrivingisterrible · 06/03/2024 10:20

Mine was Japan. I live here now and will stay forever so... yay for me 😊

Catname · 06/03/2024 10:20

My bucket list is all 7 of the New Wonders of the World - just Christ the Redeemer to go now. Then it’s a new list with driving from the west coast of USA to Monument Valley, Ngorongoro, cruising the Norwegian fjords, New Hampshire or Canada for the Autumn leaves as the main items.

Mid 50’s

Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Finland

Iceland is great!! Please go!

I travelled extensively in my 20’s and 30’s so have managed to tick off the majority of my bucket list.

I’ve visited over half the countries in the world but I still fancy going to the Falkland Islands and Antarctica. I’d also be keen to go to North Korea as I love visiting genuinely different places.

Snap! Antarctica, Falkland Islands and South Georgia for me too and we're going in January! Beyond excited.

Loads!

Berlin and Auschwitz
Sicily
Deep South to learn more about slavery and the Civil War
Syria, Iran, Jordan
Japan
Argentina
Chile

gohomeroger1 · 06/03/2024 10:38

Like you I want to see the blossom season in Japan...we are planning to go when the DC are both in their teens to appreciate it.

We are also planning to finally make it to Australia in 2026 after our last trip was cancelled in 2020. Me and DH have both said we would rather have one bucket list trip every few years than the package holidays every year that are so much money.

OnTheTuftedWilton · 06/03/2024 10:42

South America - especially Marble Caves, Chile and Iguazu Falls, Brazil
Edit - age early 60s

MissAmbrosia · 06/03/2024 11:16

Scandinavia - been to Oslo but would like to explore some more. Especially Stockholm. And a boat trip to the Arctic Circle. Would also like to visit some of the Scottish isles. We end up going to Italy a lot as we love it and there are a never ending list of places still to visit.

If you would like any help/ideas for Paris, please just let me know. Happy to advise you and make a brilliant trip for your mum.

GettingStuffed · 06/03/2024 11:21

Iceland, not just for the northern lights. I'm fascinated with volcanoes.

RaraRachael · 06/03/2024 11:22

I'm 61 and recently retired from teaching so it's a revelation to me to be able to go away any time I like after 40 years of being ruled by school holidays.

I've been writing to a penpal from Australia for nearly 50 years. She visited me in about 1992 so for the 50th anniversary of our friendship I'm planning on travelling to see her. I've only done a 9 hour flight before and long flights bore me senseless so I'm not looking forward to that part of it.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 06/03/2024 11:23

The Silk Road is really high on my list as is Tanzania's Southern Circuit. I'm going to India this year which I'm super excited about, and ticked off Cape Town and New York in the last few years which were on my list.
I really want to do a great rail trip but undecided which - maybe the Jungfrau?
Planning Japan in a few years but that's more of a bucket list for DS than me!

ScouseOfCards · 06/03/2024 11:24

Mine is New Orleans. I would absolutely love to go but it's probably a while away! Late 30s with young DDs.

That’s definitely a trip I’ll do at some point. Are you flying via Chile?

TammyOne · 06/03/2024 11:29

So many!
I want to spend a month sailing around the Greek islands, from corfu, round the Aegean and up to the Sporades.
A train trip across Central Europe, taking in Prague, Vienna, Budapest and Lubliana.
India- specifically Kerala and Goa.
One of the French Caribbean islands, maybe Martinique.
I can dream!

RaraRachael · 06/03/2024 11:30

The Silk Road is really high on my list

That's one I'd definitely like to do if I was a bit more adventurous

mydrivingisterrible · 06/03/2024 11:31

@RaraRachael That's super exciting! Long haul flights are unpleasant, so if you can break it up it'll do you a world of good - or my old routine was to get absolutely plastered. That works too
